We’d originally booked for Husavik but the seas were going to be too rough. North Sailing gave us the option to move to a location in the fjord that would be more protected. We worried that we might not see whales there, but our r worries we’re almost immediately put to rest when we got out of n the water. We saw a humpback and stayed with it for quite a while. Then almost right away we saw a second larger humpback and stayed with it for some time. I never felt the captain was getting too close, though, or stressing the whales in any way.
The weather wasn’t ideal as it was cold, rainy and windy. But the gear we were given really helped keep us warm and dry. Once we made the move to return to port, we were served cocoa and cinnamon rolls.
The staff were all great and we really enjoyed the whale expert who was spotting the whale and giving lots of interesting information.
We wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again. It was a highlight of our trip.

Thank you so much for leaving us this wonderful review! I'm happy to hear that you're schedule was flexible enough to relocate and join us in calmer seas of Eyjafjörður that day. Good to hear that our overalls kept you warm and nice during the cold, wind and rain - unfortunately, we can expect any kind of weather in all months of the year. Thank you for your kind words, we truly appreciate it. I hope we'll see you again someday! Kind regards, Þórný

We had the tour from Hjalteyri because the rough sea in Husavik. Calm sea, no wind, actually we did not need the provided overalls. We spotted a lot of humpbacks. The guides told a lot about the whales.
In one word: very good organised and I can recommend North Sailing.

Hello, Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We appreciate you taking the time to write such a nice review. I'm glad you were able to relocate and go from Hjalteyri instead of Húsavík due to weather conditions, and to not even need overalls there! Thank you so much for your kind words and recommendation. I hope we can welcome you on board with us again someday - maybe in Húsavík! Kind regards, Þórný

Went on their whale watching trip 2 days ago.
Wow, they certainly deliver on whale sightings. We saw at least 10 and very a playful one, that stayed on the surface for a long time, even saw the whale jump out of the water.
The boat is very sturdy and the wet suits keep you dry and warm.
The boat had just left the dock when we had our first sighting.
We recommend doing this tour, they are professional very informative on whales.

Don't believe all the "98%+ chance of seeing a whale" marketing. Ours counted as "seeing a whale" despite it being a tail (which most of us missed) for a split second about 1 mile away. Spent a lot of time motoring around with about 6 other boats hoping to see something but only a seal showed its face. It was a good 2 hours though with commentary, hot chocolate and not too crowded. Try to get up onto the top section (room for 4 people) as this give all round views.

If you whale watch you sit quietly, not chasing them at full revs. Disappointing excursion though we did see some.

Dear John, Thank you for your review. I'm disappointed that this was your experience of our whale watching tour. However, the whale watching tours are unpredictable as we're dealing with wild nature and no way to control all variables. I must admit I'll at least take a little comfort in the fact that you managed to spot whales, although I wish your overall experience would have been better. Hopefully you had a good time in Iceland nonetheless. Best, Elís Orri

We had an incredible experience, a very pleasant trip with the small and fast oak boat, with warm clothes provided by the company. We could see many whales during navigation and, at end, we received a good hot chocolate & bread. We loved all!

The scenic Eyjafjörður fjord, combined with a lot of whales and traditional Icelandic oak boat is a combination that can't go wrong! Not to mention the hot chocolate and the cinnamon bun! The boat is a small fishing boat, and we were about 12 guests onboard that day. So there was plenty of room for everyone to see the whales. We could see a couple of whales from land already, so no need to sail for a long time before the action began. Much nicer than the big, overcrowded boats that have to sail an extra hour from Akureyri or Husavik to get out to the action.

Hello Jesper F They are certainly charming and a little more personal as these tours are not as busy. We are glad that you enjoy it and recommend it. We hope to see you again someday, whether in Húsavík or in Hjalteyri! Best regards Brynjar

We were trying to watch whales in Husavik but the weather was really bad so they told us to try this place as we were going that way. When we came to Hjalteyri we already saw couple of whales from the shore!
The weather was so much better, staff were really nice and the whole trip was just amazing. We saw so many whales and really close as well! I still cant believe it how awesome it was.
At the end of watchig they gave us a hot chocolate and cinnamon buns! Just perfect trip! :)

This was the highlight of our two week honeymoon around Iceland!! Absolutely go! We went in September, and we saw at least three humpback whales and a minke whale. We originally tried to go on a tour in Husavik with North Sailing, but due to very rough waters, they highly recommended that we return the next day and go to Hjalteyri instead near Akureyri. We are so glad we did! The water was calm, the day was actually sunny, and we saw so many whales! There were only about 11 people on our boat as well. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, and gave a running commentary in English during the trip. When a whale was spotted, the captain of the ship got as close as possible and then turned off the engine so we could enjoy the sights and sounds of the whales. On the way back, they gave us delicious hot chocolate and cinnamon buns. We wore warm clothes because we were worried about being cold, but they gave us special warm, windproof suits to wear, so I actually ended up being hot because of the pleasant weather. At times I think we were fewer than 30 feet away from a whale. I’m fairly confident this will be the best whale watching experience of my life ever possible! :-)
