Don't believe all the "98%+ chance of seeing a whale" marketing. Ours counted as "seeing a whale" despite it being a tail (which most of us missed) for a split second about 1 mile away. Spent a lot of time motoring around with about 6 other boats hoping to see something but only a seal showed its face. It was a good 2 hours though with commentary, hot chocolate and not too crowded. Try to get up onto the top section (room for 4 people) as this give all round views.

We chose North Sailing in Hjalteyri because we had watched a few of their whale watching trips from our accommodation directly across the fjord. We had also been on a previous whale watching trip with another company and had been impressed by their ability to position the boat (Knorrinn) well without interfering with the humpback whale's natural behaviour. We were provided with quality flotation suits to keep us warm and safe. The afternoon we went out was calm and raining lightly but this didn't spoil the trip. There were only six passengers on our trip so there was plenty of space to move around. A humpback whale was about 500m offshore and we initially saw two dives, one of which was very close to the boat. We then went in search of a pod of pilot whales that had unusually come into the fjord. We spent some time with them before finding a humpback whale again, which was the same one we had seen earlier. We were treated to some flipper waving and two more dives. The commentary was educational and we were shown a fluke print of one of the whale's dives which we had never seen before. We were provided with hot chocolate and cinnamon buns on the way back to harbour which was a good way to end the trip.

We went out on what looked like rough seas but the ride was smooth and we saw so many humpback whales that at times you just couldn’t see them all. It was an amazing day and the crew was wonderful.

Having watched many humpbacked whales around the world, this was one of my best experiences. Once we were all suitably dressed in warm, waterproof overalls, we boarded the boat & within minutes were surrounded by 12 male whales. The captain & mate were knowledgeable & very respectful of the whales (not chasing them but waiting for them to come to us). The boat was not overcrowded so we could move around to get the best pictures! Our trip was in the afternoon & this meant that when the other boats left to return to Akureyri, the whales performed specially for us! It's worth driving along the coast to have a great experience.

We were trying to watch whales in Husavik but the weather was really bad so they told us to try this place as we were going that way. When we came to Hjalteyri we already saw couple of whales from the shore! The weather was so much better, staff were really nice and the whole trip was just amazing. We saw so many whales and really close as well! I still cant believe it how awesome it was. At the end of watchig they gave us a hot chocolate and cinnamon buns! Just perfect trip! :)
