Cool to see elk but the view of the cliffs out to the Pacific Ocean is magnificent. Worth the drive, it is about 60 minutes from Petaluma, CA

A wonderful time in Point Reyes! The elk in the reserve are in rut and the males have assembled and are protecting their harams. The sound of elk bugling can be heard throughout the reserve

A long bumpy ride was definitely worth seeing these endangered elk. We only saw them from the road and they were quite a distance from us. Bring binoculars

Family told us to make our way to Point Reyes. They didn’t give us much direction but simply said to go. We gave them a report stating that the elk were the coolest part and their response....what elk ? Please ask the park rangers where...More

Went for a small hike. We saw the tule elk! Beautiful area too! We parked down by an old historic farm, that too was cool!

The landscapes alone is worth a visit. Seeing the elk herds is such a treat. I read that Muir or a contemporary camped near here and was awoken by thundering herds. There’s not that many today, but soothing site for all ages.

On the way to Drake's Beach, it was a surprise to see a group of Tule elk in the distance. These animals are huge. I wasn't expecting to see them. What majestic animals. Make sure you have your DSLR with at least a 200mm telephoto...More

This was the highlight of our visit to the Point Reyes area - we started our hike early (before 9am) and saw lots of wildlife. Many elk, and even a coyote. Just turn around whenever you're tied of hiking.

Tule Elk Preserve + hiking w/3yr old (2 Replies)
Hi We're planning a day trip to the Point Reyes National Seashore mainly to see the Tule Elk. I was wondering if anyone knew if they are there year round and what time of the day we should go for the best chance of seeing them. Also, can anyone recommend some easy hikes that a 3 yr old can do? My 10 yr old would really like the Earthquake Trail, but is it easy enough for a 3 yr old? Thanks!

fastidious traveler - We actually went this past weekend - the weather was beautiful!! We did the Earthquake Trail and my 3 yr old did okay on it, but she did start slowing down 3/4 into and asked to be carried the rest of the way :) Next time we'll try that trail to the meadow. It might be more interesting for her. Also, we did see some elk at Pierce Point exactly where you said and got to see some very close to the road just south of the ranch. It was the end of the day so we didn't take...More
