Safe, Popular Harbour Beach
5.0 of 5 bubblesJan 2022
Despite the off-putting name, this is a very safe beach. Shark nets protect the beach, so you won’t be seeing any scenes from Jaws here. The name is a hangover from colonial days when a large number of sharks were seen and caught here in the 1800s. This is a harbour beach, not a surf beach, so it is sheltered, the water is glistening and the waves are gentle. Rocky, bushy headlands make it a very pretty spot. It’s family friendly and is a very popular beach. One of the big plus-es here is Neilsen Park, a large area of shady parkland alongside the beach with some picnic tables and lots of space to spread a picnic blanket. This is a great space if you want to escape the sun, kick a ball or have a picnic. It’s an ideal location for large groups and families to gather. Like most Australian beaches, theres no natural shade on the sand, so being able to retreat to the shade under the giant and ancient fig trees means that you can plan an extended stay. The facilities are basic but there’s everything you need. There's a kiosk, changing rooms, outdoor showers, clean toilets and you’ll find parking mostly along Greycliffe Ave (although it can get very busy on weekends). The historic kiosk has stood in central position on the waterfront for over 100 years, giving the beach a uniquely charming feel. They serve simple beach food like fish and chips, egg and bacon rolls, coffee and ice creams. NOTE: This is also one end of the Hermitage Foreshore Walking Trail, a stunning 2km coastal trail that leads you along the foreshore, past a number of small secluded beaches and gives you stunning views of the harbour. A beautiful walk that is well worth it if you have the time.

Situated within Nielsen Park Shark Beach is located at Vaucluse in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and is a really great experience.
It’s quite small, compared to some of the larger Beaches we’ve visited, but it is quite sheltered so there isn’t the continually crashing waves you get at some Beaches.
It also has a shark net although I feel the name of the Beach was more of a marketing tease to get you there!
But it’s a comfort having it there.
It’s also a great place for a picnic, with three large sheltered picnic areas with impressive Fig Trees for Company so there’s plenty of shade.
There’s also the Nielsen Park Kiosk where you can get a cold drink or have something to eat.
You also have stunning Harbour views to Sydney with The Manly Ferry going back and forth (there is no Ferry access to Shark Beach unfortunately).
We were lucky when we were there to see some Kookaburras who didn’t seem fazed by the attention!
It’s accessible via Car where, at busier times parking can be quite challenging.
When we first went (3 years ago) we got there via the Hermitage Foreshore walk which was a great coastal walk experience.
Almost forgot to mention there are Toilets there which aren’t too bad for Public Loos but they are quite basic!

You have to be a local I suspect to be here. Walk round the boardwalk from Vaucluse to Nilsons Point and find this lovely quiet beach with an old tea house converted to restaurant with take away outlet to the side.

This is a lovely beach, almost hidden from sight, and set within a small National Park reserve. There were toilet blocks in good condition, a cafe & restaurant, and plenty of shade overlooking the beach if that's what you want. Beautiful spot!

I may be a little biased, as I lived close by for 2 years - but this was always my favourite. Great Cafe/Restaurant on the beach & epic Harbour views just a 2 minutes walk through the park. It is tucked within Nielsens Park, so you really do feel as though you are on a beach surrounded by nature!

The beach is a key one in Nielsen Park and it is very good with clean sand and blue eater and attractive rocks at each end. It has an old fashioned cafe as well and u=is the start of the Hermitage walking trail.

...although there is a shark net, but that only makes the place safer, right? A nice beach for families.

This calm beach in Neilsen Park fills with families on the weekend. Good place for a paddle and the sand’s ok. There are some quieter beach along the Hermitage walk to the west.

This restaurant is 💩. I had to wait 20 minutes to get my fries and when I asked for it the staff was really bad and arrogant....

Shark Beach near Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, Australia, is a great spot, with the added bonus of having a cafe and great restaurant,The Nielsen,so close to the beach.
There's also a nature walk around the coast with excellent views of the city and Shark Island. Good mobility needed for the coastal nature walk.
The beach does not have a lifeguard.
There are public changing rooms and toilets.
