22 km A/R, 6 to 8h, 400m elevation gain. fairly easy though long
Accessible from Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) via a 4x4 minibus in 30 minutes (with the company Mountain Freeks), this hike starts in Kvemi Okrokana, an almost abandoned village, and crosses the spectacular Kasari canyon before opening onto a vast valley. Hikers can admire pastures populated by free-ranging sheep and cows, snow-capped mountains, and colorful travertines created by mineral springs. Along the way, you will pass through the almost deserted village of Ketrisi, passing through ruins of watchtowers and reaching the fortress of Zakagori, the highest point of the hike. Don't miss the sparkling lake of Abano with its translucent waters and sparkling springs. A unique blend of stunning natural landscapes and historic sites, unforgettable.
Only small downside: the trail is mainly a gravel road on the first third, and despite the ban of 4x4s drive on it in order to bring tourists to the entrance of the valley, damaging the road, bothering hikers and raising a lot of dust. Fortunately it's still relatively uncommon but for how long?

Wonderful walk. Start at the bridge when you don’t drive a 4x4. The walk took us about 6 hours. At one point we crossed a little bridge (where the Georgian flag is) and took a little detour. We were warned for Sheppard dogs, because they could bite. Luckily we didn’t see any. We were only one of a few who walked the whole trail. Most people had taxi’s or 4x4’s. The fortress at the end is not really what I expected but had a nice view. We had no problems with the military guys there. Take food and water with you, as there is no opportunity to buy any on your hike.

I do recommend to visit this place, but please read first my recommendations:
-don’t start from the cable car station, but drive to the first bridge crossing the river( you will see Kazbeg mountain from that place) otherwise you will spend at least an hour walking and don’t see too much and waste 2hours...(picture of the bridge attached)
-more far you go, more nicer and amazing it will be( thats why it is better to skip the first part and drive there)
-don’t use taxi for the whole route, rather walk, it is around 8-10km one way, but very easy. You will enjoy more the views on foot
-after aprox. 5km you can enjoy cold refreshment, there is a bar where you can buy water, cold lemonade(4lari)and rest under umbrellas
-we have walked till Zakagori on the left side of the river and on the way back, we have used the other side of the river on the way back( the path is marked “blue” for bikers and it is just after the 12 apostles monastery)
-by taking the other side of the river on the way back you will get to the blue miner lake/lagoon which was spectacular!
-it took us 6-7 hours of walking from car to Zakagori and back( with lot of stops, pictures etc) and remember to add 2 more hours if you park at the cable car station
-watch out for cars, taxis driving the same route as you will walk( it is quiet narrow and sometimes difficult to move aside)
This is a must visit if you are near and keep in mind, the more and far you walk, more amazing views you will see, I promise!

A fantastic walk as described, however don’t approach the Zakagori fortress at the end by the military post if aggressive dogs are present. As we walked up the small hill to the fortress, two dogs ran out and attacked me. It ended when the army guys fired a shot to scare them off. Spent the rest of the day getting to the local hospital for a rabies shot. The other local dogs are fine but these ones are really nasty!

We rented mountainbikes in Stephantsminda and biked our way up to the valley using the main road. The distance is about 15km, before the actual 15km offroad ascent begins. The drive up is very rewarding and you won't get disappointed. The difficulty level is not so high.

The cheapest way to get there is to take the minibus to Tbilisi (starts at the main square of Kazbegi every hour) and get off at Truso/Kobi/Almasiani (ask driver). Start your hike there or get a lift to Kvemo Okrakana.

Long but gorgeous and not tough at all. Even the very end of the trek to the ruins on the border isn't so bad. You will need your passport though. Border guards hold it while go up the short but steep path to the ruins.

This is an absolutely stunning valley with an easy, mostly flat walk along a Jeep track. We drove our 4 by 4 just past the town, then walked from there to the next town, about 11 miles round trip. Loads of wildflowers and an interesting small mineral lake to see. Border station with South Ossetia just past the turnaround point.

First, how to get there (for cars) as this info is difficult to be found in the travel books and you can only dream that you will find some road signs :) you have to go to Kobi village, going from Stepancminda, turn right into valley (50 m before police/112 station). Then you will have two roads, one that will go over the river (on the right side) is the dead end road for now as after another 6-7 km you will find that they is a bridge under the construction, so now more road for cars. Potentially you can walk other the "temporary" bridge but is was not that brave. Other solution, turn left after first 2-3 km, the "one way" road will go up, reaching 2232 m above the sea level, and then will deeply go down to the valley. Then depending on the weather you will reach some villages :) (the most problematic could be wide natural rivers that you will need to cross :)) but a lot of FUN!

was there bike rentals near by for people to rent and ride the path? We would like to do this. I saw on a map that there was Kobi ski resort near the beginning of this trek. Perhaps they have rentals. Do you know? Thank you so much, Jeanne

Hi,
I'm about to travel in Truso valley by a 4X4 jeep, at the beginning of September, and was wondering,
- How much time will it take me to go all the way and back, and with a stop at the soda water pool?
Thanks to the replyers,
Elad.

How far can you drive in to the valley with non 4wd car? Prepared to walk the 22k round trip but would like to know how far we can take a car & is there somewhere to leave the car when we are at the start of the valley?
Written August 31, 2017
hi! there is no road in the meaning of the road.
it is a way between rivers and mountains, in June last year snow was still lying in the valley, it is also quite a rainy area, and a lot of stones are falling over as well..
i do not think in these conditions are regular car can drove far. you need to be careful.
we drove there with a guide through the valley and just parked the car really far in the valley, closer to the military border post. and we just made a walk on our own.
i dont know if that answers your questions, but i'd say with a regular car you cant go really deep into the valley, it can be dangerous or you just get stuck somewhere.
