- stmichel25Bengaluru, India57 contributionsMesmerising viewsBeautiful views once you get there. The taxis will take you there for 50 Lari and wait for you for 30-35 minutes. If you pay more they will stay on longer. It’s a steep climb once they drop you but not too high. Will take only 3-4 minutes to climb up. The views of the snow capped mountains is mesmerising!Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 22, 2023
- Ketan S27 contributionsBeautiful view of mountainGreat view at the top. The road leading to top is very good. It seems private or tourist taxi is not allowed and one has to take local taxi from there. It is charging 100 Lari for trip irrespective of number of persons and will stay for 30 minutes there. There is steep climb of 3-4 minutes after reaching there by taxi but it is worth visiting and it is not difficult climb.Visited July 2023Written July 24, 2023
- Iolanda Guerra e AndradeLisbon, Portugal1,904 contributionsA must ...The Gergeti Trinity Church ensemble, which was built in the 14th century is set on top of a steep mountain at an elevation of 2170 metres. It includes the church itself, a belltower and a surrounding wall. The view from its wall is absolutely breathtaking.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten September 27, 2023
- ErkiBearLondon, United Kingdom380 contributionsGreat views if the weather is with you.Gergeti is the iconic photo you always see of Georgia with Mount Kazhbegi in the background. Some of our group hiked up to the church which took approx 1.5 hours but we took the easy route of Mikhail and his truck! The church itself has a very steep walkway up to it but is worth the climb and beautiful inside as with all Georgian holy places. Great views if the weather is with you.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 13, 2023
- Dirk WAlexandra Headland, Australia6,458 contributionsGeorgia's Postcard PictureThe Gergeti Trinity Church dates back to the 14th century and is probably the best known picture to sell Georgian Tourism. You reach it either by hiking 1.5km or getting a 4WD from Stephantsminda (some local families seem to hold the monopoly on this lucrative business). Inside, the church is not especially attractive, but rather plain. The whole site is best viewed from a distance and I suggest the parking lot offers the best photo opportunity, because you can get Gergeti at 2,170m with Mt Kazbek, 5,047m, in one shot. The weather will be important during your visit : on a clear day the views are stunning : Stephantsminda on one side, Mt Kazbegi on the other. Actually, the whole complex can also be seen, and photographed if you have a proper tele lens, from your accommodation in Stephantsminda.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten November 1, 2023

The Church is pretty cool and the mountain views are spectacular. The clouds were billowing around the mountain peaks and the air was fresh. The church itself is a rather simple stone building with a separate bell tower. However its remoteness and location on top of a mountain have made it an icon. It can be reached by a steep road which requires a four wheel drive vehicle from Stepantsminda. The vehical will only take you to a parking area near the church from where you still need to walk up a steep trail to get to the church.
You could of course hike all the way up but it requires a lot of time, fitness and stamina.
The church itself can get crowded with tourists. However, there is nothing else nearby and the large open area around the church offers great views over the surrounding country. On a clear day, you can also see Mount Kazbegi.
Definitely a must see if you are in Stepantsminda.

Near the Georgian village of Gergeti, at the top of a hill of 2,170 meters, in the vastness of the Caucasus Mountains and emoldurated by the awesome "Mount Kazbek", you will find the miraculous "Gergeti Trinity Church", also known as the "Holy Trinity Church". It dates from the 14th century, a very simple and isolated church, but very active as a religious temple of the "Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church". Visit the church, its separate bell tower and, principally, contemplate the beauty of the astonishing scenic mountains just in front of your eyes. Say a prayer and be thankful. "Gergeti Trinity Church" is a symbol of Georgia and one of the most impacting images I have ever saved in my travelling memories. Enjoy!

People normally travel to Gergeti for 2 reasons, to climb Mount Kazbek or see the Trinity Church. Initially it seems that its located really far away from any civilisation but you can actually see it from the main road below. Also you can hike to it within one hour so its not that remote or difficult to get to either. But it is definitely beautiful and from certain angles and in ideal weather/lights, it looks fairytale mystical. The fact that it's pictures are the main draw for people to Georgia is the proof that there is something different about it.
I've been to far more remote locations and this is a proper tourist attraction than a place of worship but still there's no way the visit to the church can be disappointing.
I mean after all these are mythical Caucasian mountains.

Easily THE reason to visit Stepantsminda - this view cannot be topped (pun intended).
The walk there isn't particularly hard - there's a goat trail offering some nice views directly from the village, though you can also take a cab straight to the top.
Entrance is free and there's gorgeous views from there - come on a clear day as otherwise it may not be the experience you're looking for.
From there you can either turn back, or hike up somewhat further towards the glacier (will take a long time) or just for some more awesome views of Mt. Kazbek.

The church itself isn't that interesting, as there are probably hundreds of these in Georgia. But the location is beautiful. Take a hike up the mountain, along the road or through the woods (although the path might be hard to find when there's a lot of snow). Great views over the Kazbegi area.

Its a destination that you would have on your list when you visit Gorgia. The trek up is around 3 hours but you can hire a 4x4 and save some time and energy. The road is really rough in places so it takes a bit of time but it is worth it. Gorgeous views from the church over the valley and up to the mountains. To enter the church you must cover your head and if not wearing a skirt there is one there to put on. Men should also put on a skirt if they are wearing shorts.

We could've easily spent an entire afternoon there, just sitting back and enjoying the beauties surrounding this spectacular Church. The simple fact that they had to build it all the way up there in the mountains is just an astonishing feat! The church itself is really beautiful, with an amazing architectural design. Both inside and outside are amazing, and the views from up there are just memorizing!

Its worth the way up. If you want perfect pictures go early in the morning or after 18h. The oficial road is under construction, if its true. There is a detour and you can go up with your own 4x4 and good driving and offroadskills. SUV is not enough. Or you take a local taxi, bad tongues say, thats the reason for the detour and blocked main road.

Must visit place when in Kazbegi!! However the road there is soo bad it was crazy. You need a 4x4 car so you can pay 20 GEL per person for someone to drive you there, the road is so bumpy it is crazy honestly never had this in my life but luckily it is not the whole road just a part of it. Survive the crazy ride and you will be rewarded with awesome views! Totally worth it.

We will be going there next month with our 10 month old baby.. how practical is it to get a stroller? Or will we have to carry the baby throughout the walk??

You will be at an outlying village of the former Soviet state. There are no stroller hire facilities around. You will either need bring your own and ride in the 4X4 as the walk is far too long, or you will need to carry your child in one of these backpack type carriers.

Hello all,
Can you please advise me the way to the church by trekking. I am planning to visit with my car which is sport car, and cannot drive on bad road. After that I wanna contunie by walking. Where I can start walking and how long does it take to reach the church? Is there any accommodation or camping in the top?

Hi, going to Georgia tomorrow. First I want to stay in Kutaisi for 2 days, then move to Tibilisi and Kazbega to climb and see the monastery. Do you know what are to conditions now? Can you recommend a place to stay in Kazbega for 2 days? Maybe some transportation options as well?
Hi. I dont know about condition now. You Can go by taxi (cost from Tbilisi about 300$). I recommend hotel Kazbegi Rooms. Regards!

Hi there,
Could you go to Kazbegi when it snows? I also wonder whether it is possible or not to climb to Gergeti monastery when there's snow.
I mean to be in Georgia in early December.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can get there in winter, but the weather is key. I am in Georgia now and have heard no reports of road closures due to snow. As for hiking there. We have done it without a guide in the summer time. If there is snow then that would certain,y change the nature of things completely. Check with the locals about conditions.

Be ready to temperature from 7-10 degrees up to 20-22
Could be windy
Rains possible, the best choice is light plastic raincoat that could be easily worn over other clothes
