Around 1 hour drive from Beirut. This historic site of an original cave where Mary awaited the arrival of Jesus is well preserved with the original cave converted into a small chapel. There is also a huge observation tower/monument with great views of the surrounding area and another small chapel. In recent years a stunning basilica is being built on top of the site which is in an imposing location with beautiful mosaic’s. There is a gift shop, cafe and restrooms on site. Worth a stop if visiting the southern Governate of Lebanon.

The first time I came here was part of a tour, then two months later with a friend who wanted to visit this well known pilgrimage site. There are several things to see, among them, are the Byzantine-style Basilica and sacred cave. According to many historians & local guides, the latter was used as a safe refuge for the Virgin Mary while she waited for Jesus to return from his preachings in nearby Sidon (hence the name Lady of Awaiting).
My favourite part of both visits, was getting to the top of the most visible & famous landmark there: the Tower of Our Lady of Mantara. I found the scenery very beautiful as I climbed my way up the tower where there were openings at various levels. The best panoramic views of the surrounding area was (not surprisingly), at the very top, which was well worth the climb.

This basilica is enormous. The interior is cavernous. It holds a huge number or parishioners. More impressive is the tower that you can climb for a fantastic view. The original church is equally impressive for different reasons. It's in a natural cave with a fantastic ambience.

The place is for prayers and calm. Overlooking the sea on a hill. A spiritual place to respect and enjoy.

Our Lady of Mantara is still under construction especially inside the main basilica (still only bare concrete in some areas) which made for a disappointing first visit.

While this is a very religious site, it also offers a traveler a fantastic opportunity to take the cable car and see most of Beirut. There is a nice church on the site which can be used for prayer and reflection. Well worth a visit.

This is a symbolic site for Christians as this is said to be the place for Mary used to wait for Jesus to return from his preaching. Worth visiting.

It is not a historic building, it is a modern basilica, still under construction (some final works, no possibly terrible scaffolding anymore). The church is beautifully located at the top of the mountain, which makes place even more stunning. The basilica commemorates the place where Saint Mary was waiting in the Cave for Jesus and other men.

This little church right next to a more modern one is carved out of rock. It is small but lovely. The interior is rough hewn so you really get a sense of how rustic it is. There's even a year round display of the Nativity in a carved out niche near the door. You park on the street above where the new church is and walk down several steps to the plaza where the entrance is. Access is free.
If you are visiting Mleeta, this is close by.

Ma tata means waiting. Our lady of Mantara in Maghdouchi south of Lebanon is the place where Virgin Mary used to wait Jesus Her son during his voyage to preach Christianity in the villages north of Jerusalem. It is a place to visit and pray
