Unique experience! I definitely recommend going with a tour guide/group - they definitely have the inside scoop on how to score the best views. We went with Paradee Holidays and paired it with the Floating Market tour. We had the option of riding the train into the market but we preferred seeing the train coming in to the market. Be aware - the drive to the market from bangkok is a little over an hour, but the ride back into bangkok is 2+ hours of traffic.

Unique Thailand Experience. Tourists versus Train. Exciting moment as Tourist Police tried to clear the tracks for the incoming train. And stall holders retract their produce and tents from the track with instructions in multiple languages from Station Master.

This is not just another traditional Thai market. Or course the market sells everything under the sun, but what makes this market different from all the rest? The train! Part of the market is on top of a railway track, requiring vendors to move their goods and retract awnings when the train passes by. Shoppers crowd together to get out of the path of the train, which slowly passes just inches away. Quite an experience! I arranged a private tour with Quality Thai Guide that included the railway market, floating village and Kanchanaburi tour. Great day outside of Bangkok!

We did not know what to expect. We have seen the pictures online but we could not imagine firsthand. As you traverse the tracks, you can buy just about anything from fruit, souvenirs and other items. We decided to stop at a little restaurant next to the tracks to grab a bite to eat before the train came through. With about 5-10 minutes before the train was supposed to pass you see a mad rush from the vendors to put up their displays.
Then, the train comes a semi-slow speed. You literally can touch the train. You are inches from being hit by the train!!! There are so many people packing themselves in just trying to get a shot. It was a terrific experience.
The market around the tracks has plenty to eat (yum).
I highly recommend it.

We were aggressively accosted by owners of cafe below. At first they called for us to stand near their cafe to watch train, then would only let us stay if we bought their expensive drinks. I was happy to buy a drink after train, but with minutes to go, wanted to watch first. Lots of shouting and harassment. Very embarrassed. Avoid this place

In the morning, the train arrives at the station at 1110 and departs at 1130. We reached about an hour earlier to walk around the railway market. There are many local products such as live seafood including catfish, and vegetables. There are also stores that sell souvenirs. It can get quite squeezy as the railway track is narrow. About 30 minutes before the train arrived, we went to a Punjung cafe to buy drinks. When the train arrived, the staff allowed us to stand on the cafe chairs! So we had an unobstructed view as the train passed by!

When you come to Bangkok, one of the special attractions is the Maeklong Railway Market. When you come to the railway market, only a few trains pass through the center of the market every day.
This miraculous phenomenon, in our view, is extremely thrilling. But it is common for the locals, and there are some cafes on both sides of the train road where you can sit and watch the whole process, so it is worth visiting.

This is a beautiful place. It's worth visiting here. As a Thai tourist, I would say it's an unforgettable trip for you all. Lovely experiences with many friendly strangers greeting each other while the train was arriving at the station made me feel connected to this place.

Went with a tour group, and started on the actual train a few stations back and arrived into the Maeklong Railway Market on the train. After that we wandered around for a bit, then got ready, like the million other tourists as the train started off again, through the market, watching with interest as how fast and quick the sellers took down and then put up and out their wares.......all in all a tight squeeze and in less than a minute.
Very interesting to see.....

How do you get to Maeklong Railway Market from Bangkok? And how do you buy tickets to go on the trains?

Planning on doing Maeklong/Amphawa on Sunday, April 14th. I’ve heard the markets will be open but lots of vendors may be gone celebrating the holiday. Is it still worth it to go? Anyone have any experience with either of these during Songkran?

Hello this is not a rail station. It's a market on the rail track. You can not move your trolley bags there due to rush and approaching train. Use bagpack instead, and leave your main luggage in hotel or whereever you stay.

Hello! I have visited the railway neighborhood in Hanoi where the Unification Express runs through. It doesn't have markets but does have residences and some shops. If I have already seen that, is it worth time seeing Maeklong Railway Market on my way to Amphawa? Thanks!

It’s the combination of a train and the market that makes it so special. Folding market as the train goes through. This is the reason why it became world famous. You certainly should see it if you are around in the area but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it if you have better things to do or places to be.
