We flew from Kununurra (with a 5 am pick up which did not add to the enjoyment ) and elected to helicopter to the top of the falls instead of walking the trail.

The Aviar experience was ok with a moderately interested pilot compared to our Bungles flight but we had some lovely early morning views over the East Kimberley on the way to the falls and some terrific views of the falls when we got there.

Helicopter pilots were fine and ride up was great but some people seemed a little terrified flying without doors in the chopper.

We were lucky the falls were pumping after some late season rain and they are a beautiful sight indeed. We were able to have a dip in a pool above the falls and you could do a short walk for views from a different angle.

The provided lunch was a bit average. The guides as well.

The major issue is that while we were there the place was besieged with helicopters from all over the place so not much peace to be had anywhere.

In retrospect I would opt for a few swoops over the falls in the light plane and a nice lunch back at your hotel. I suspect I’m a bit jaded reading that to myself!

Anyway a very long and expensive day. Enjoyable but disappointing in the end.

Steve our pilot and guide was terrific. Steve was very informative and helpful during the the treck to the Falls. A yummy lunch and morning tea was provided. Amazing scenery and a heart pumping ride in a helicopter with no doors capped the day. A must do.

The water crossings are OK (~june 20) - the last crossing, which was the deepest, went up to the knee. we brought two pairs of socks - one to wear on the water crossings so you don't slip on the rocks (less slippery than most shoes or barefoot) and a dry pair in between the water crossings.

from the viewpoints the falls are distant so doesn't look quite as spectacular compared to photos.

We hiked in and took a helicopter out. The hike is quite exposed to wear plenty of sunscreen + hat.

still worth seeing overall.

We went on a 2 week cruise to Kimberley and Indonesia on Coral Geographer, an excellent adventure travel venue.
Although most excursions were included, Mitchell Falls required helicopter access and thus was an optional extra.
Although the price was steep from the captive audience of the ship, the tour was excellent and I thought worth it.
The helicopter I was in had 5 seats, 2 front facing, 2 rear facing aft and one front seat next to the pilot. All were "window" and no middle seats although the other helicopter used was a 4 seater with one middle seat. The rear passengers switched forward and rear facing going out and coming back.
Mitchell Falls itself was a beautiful location. We landed and had lunch there and also an opportunity to swim in a pool above the Falls. The flight went over the Falls with several passes for photos.

Lovely walk, not too challenging with the help of guides. Lots to see en route and on arrival, the views are superb.

We've recently done a tour of the Kimberley which included a trip to Mitchell Falls. We did the walk to the falls that took 3-4 hours even though it's only 3.6kms. The walk is really incredible, there are so many spectacular sites along the way, we had a guided tour so we saw aboriginal art which was interesting, wildlife and had 3 swims along the way which were needed given the heat. It's hard to describe how spectacular it is, what a wonderful experience. We ate our lunch overlooking the falls and then got a helicopter out. Absolutely incredible. We'll have those memories forever.

We flew from Kununurra to Mitchell Falls. You can either had hike in from the Mitchell Falls Campsite or get a helicopter in. We chose the helicopter from the Mitchell Plateau Airstrip as it was 36 degrees and too hot to walk the approx 5kms to the Falls. This was the most amazing thing I have ever done (probably better than horizontal Falls). We lazed around in the slow flowing waters above the Falls and it was amazing. Although there were others there (maybe another 6 to 8 people) we did not see them and had the feeling we had the whole place to ourself. There are no facilities there. No toilets either. They have a shade sale up near the helicopter landing pad with a few bench seats. We used them to each our lunch. Got some great pics of the Falls and didn't want to leave when it was time. Make sure you have plenty of water, sunblock, hat, bathers and a meal. Flight from Kununurra was great. Flew out towards the Timor Sea then along the coastline. Our pilot was quite informative and was also our guide at the Falls. Highly recommend.

When I got the chance to go on a road trip to the Mitchell Plateau - Mitchell Falls, I jumped at the chance, mainly because it was a road trip and I love road trips, but this time it was also to a unique part of Australia that I had not been to.

The trip as even more spectacular than anticipated, amasing views, sensational native fauna and flora, gobsmackingly surreal settings and just top people that were met on the way all added to the experience.

But before you go jumping into your car, be aware of a few things, you will need multiple spare tyres, we went through 2 tyres in less than 4hrs driving and when I say went through, check the picture below. This is not a trip for the faint hearted. Road side camping, good old fashioned camp fires for cooking and no showers (luckily these days there are eco toilets everywhere).

It is virtually impossible to squeeze everything into such a short space, but you will see, the most amasing birdlife, you will walk/hike through pristine natural parks, if you love insects, as in butterflies and dragon flies etc, you will be in awe of the colours and amounts you will see.

On this trip you can be as alone or as social as you choose. If you decide to do the Mitchell Falls walk, approx 3-5hrs return, take lots of water, I only took 1 litre and really needed the 2 and it was not an overly hot day, there are 2 other falls on the way to Mitchell Falls, Small & Large Merton Falls, Aboriginal Art and beautiful water holes with reflections that you thought you would only see in photographs. There is also the option of a chopper flight to and from or just one way, but book if you want the return flight as they will not just take people.

I would highly recommend visiting Mitchell Falls, but note you will need a 4WD, lots of spare tyres, water/drinks, food and time, lots of time, stop at as many places as you can on the way there and back. If your lucky enough you may see river turtles and damselflies, or maybe your thing is to just sitting by the river and watch the world go by. Either way I give Mitchell Falls a big 10/10.

I vaccilated about booking this tour because of the cost - $1545 was a lot for me to pay. But it's high season in Broome and as soon as you add in plane and helicopter rides, the cost sky-rocket. I was based in Broome so had no choice but many people come in from closer towns. There were 5 of us plus our pilot/guide. From pick-up at my hotel at 5.45am to drop off at 5.15pm, the day ran like clockwork. The views from the plane, a 6-seater Cessna, were great and Brad, our pilot, gave us info as we went along - about 2 hours each way. From the plane, we transferred to a 4-wheel drive after morning tea. 20 minutes later, we started the 4km walk in to the Falls. This is rated Level 5, but it wasn't to bad. Quite a bit of clambering over rocks and boulders but I had my walking poles which helped a lot with balance. There are other falls along the way and different types of country. Fabulous ancient Indigenous rock paintings were a highlight. We had one water crossing. Take your shoes off and walk in your socks to help you grip on the rocks - don't forget to take a spare pair to change into! We were ready for a cool swim and lunch then - over an hour for that. Then up to check out the 4-tier Falls from different vantage points. Glad we had the helicopter ride back - some tours do it in the opposite direction, but it was hot by then. A long day, but worth it.
