This complex is one of the most imposing in Georgia. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti in the 16th and 17th centuries and an important stop on the Silk Road, so the fortifications are accordingly massive. This did not stop the Persians from razing the town of Gremi, so forcing the Kakheti King to move to Telavi.
The Church of the Archangels is particularly beautiful and its 16th century frescoes are in reasonably good condition. In the magnificent belltower you can see some good displays of archeological finds, portraits and paintings.

I thought the whole ensemble of the old medieval city of Gremi which is said to have lasted 150 years ( from 1466 through to 1616 was stunning, with its Archangels' complex and the Palace Bell- tower. It is worth going up the third floor of the Palace to get a magnificent view and get a better idea of what its rich historical past must have been like before Shah Abbas' invasion. The newly built and very well organized small Museum close by is also worth being visited, in my opinion.

Beautiful setting and historical importance. It was part of the Silk Road and a capital. It has survived many attacks.
The walk is relatively easy and the view is great.
A guide to understand the history is recommended.

The citadel of Gremi, founded in the 16th century, was the capital of the kingdom of Kakheti. Perched on a rocky peak, the fortress offers spectacular views of the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. Its Church of the Assumption sits proudly at the top of the site.
In all honesty, the site is more impressive seen from below or a little further, the church is certainly beautiful, but it is not a must, it is its position on this rocky piton that gives it a certain originality

Gremi complex must have been in the focus of the local authorities willing to increase the touristy attractiveness of Georgia. The city of Gremi, once the capital of the Kakhetian Kingdom and the Royal seat during XVI-XVII centuries, was destroyed by Persian Shah Abbas in 1615 and had only been restored in our days.

Quite thoroughly renovated, Gremi Complex is presently in a good condition, with many things to see. It had even been included into the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

The following are presently open to the public: the relatively small but quite interesting museum, the Royal Tower and the Church of Archangels on the top of the hill, and the ruins of aristocratic and commercial quarters of the ancient city of Gremi (including the trading arcades, a bathhouse and residential buildings) at its bottom and the ruines of the domed church in between the Royal part and the commercial quarter.

Entrance is for a fee; it was about 6 lari for the museum in Jan 2012. Guided tours are offered on spot.

The museum attendants can show you around the small hall, but guided tour isn’t that necessary with English signs and information boards available. And the Citadel attendant will tell more about the Citadel Complex and the Church of Archangels built in 1565 by order of King Leon (Levan) of Kakheti. He will also allow you to climb up the Royal Tower, should you wish. Don’t miss this chance – the panorama from up there is fabulous!

P.S. An attendant had only opened the bathroom (near the parking lot) for a petty fee. Parking was for free though.

Quite an imposing sight on the landscape as you approach. Beautiful architecture and equally beautiful views of the surrounding area. Not very busy compared with others we visited on this day. Worth a visit.

On the river's bend, up the hill, the great castle towers. Some walk from the bus/car stop. Amazing view on the ancient village. Wine cellars and great photo opportunities

Too bad the area is full of trash and garbage, though,

We visited Gremi Church when we rented bikes from Temi Community. It's beautifully located and you have nice views over the whole area. Inside the church is also nice;)

Standing above the green valley of Alazan, Gremi attracts travelers whose road goes between Telavi and Kvareli. Gloomy and monumental, the castle is the one of the most visited tourist points in Georgia.
The architectural ensemble of Gremi in the look that it has up to present day was built in the 16th century in the times of King Levan of Kakheti, who announced Gremi the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti.
