Cetho Temple is a Javanese-Hindu Temple that was built around the 15th century on a mountainside, Mount Lawu. To get to the top of this temple, one must be physically capable of climbing up six (6) flights of stair steps up the side of this mountain. The stone steps leading up to the top of the temple are in very good condition, so most people should be to make it up to the top of the temple without much difficulty.
For those who do make it up to the top level of the stair steps up, they will be rewarded with stunning views of both the lower levels of the temple and of the beautiful valley below.

We drove to the temple really in the morning. As we got out of the city and started climbing you had great views of Mt. Merapi in the distance and the terraced fields on this mountain. The temple site is clean, very reminiscent of the Bali temples

It was a rainy day when I visited Candi Cetho - mist hanging over the area, which made it even more magic.
Do arrange a good car, because the road is extremely steep (we came by "ojeg" which means at the back seat of a motor cycle. not adviced when it is raining!). From Cetho there is a great walk to Candi Sukuh.

Cetho temple Karanganyar is a Hindu temple located in the hamlet Cetho, Gumeng Village, District Jenawi, Karanganyar. It is located at an altitude high enough that 1,400 masl. Cetho temple Karanganyar have a similar background to Sukuh temple also in Karanganyar.
Cetho name itself is a designation given by the local community which also is the name of the village where the temple site is located. Cetho the Java language has meaning "clear", this is because in the hamlet Cetho people can see very clearly the view of the mountains surrounding them Merbabu, Merapi Mount, Lawu Mount, and at the summit of Sindoro kejuhan Mount visible and Sumbing. Also from this village also presented us with a broad view of the town of Surakarta and Karanganyar the sprawling city below.

After driving up and down the hill with the beautiful scenery along the mountain road, we finally saw this beautiful Hindu temple. Candi Cetho was built in the 15th century on the mount Lawu, 1496 m above the sea level. It's still used for pilgrimage. Believers of "Kejawen" (old authentic javanese religion) use this temple for "Pertapaan" (deep meditation effort to achieve self-realization). All the statues reference the stories of the temple. 300 m north east candi cetho, down hill there is another temple called "Candi Kethek" (monkey temple), the area is still wild, nice for hiking. Visit this temple in the morning as it's always in the mist when the sun is gone. Almost no public transport come to this area. For $ 50 you can rent a car for 12 hours included driver and gasoline that brings you from solo to this temple and sukuh temple and you can stop wherever you want it. The entrance fee is Rp.10,000 for tourist and only Rp.3,000 for local.

After a long drive through the hills, eventually arrived at Candi Cetho. The hindu temple (1495m) is located on the same mountain range as Mt Lawu, a star to volcano.
Along the way, many folks are walking behind their vehicles which were too heavy to be driven up the slopes. So, if you are a group in a SUV, MPV, likely the car will not be able to ascend the steep slopes.!...
Admission to the Candi premises, 25k if you are a foreign visitor. Entering the temple, all will be directed to a hut to collect a loaned Sarong/sash to wear it into the temple. Voluntary donation for the sarong. Upon exit, deposit the sarong into a basket.
There are some steep steps to negotiate whilst making your way to the top of the Candi, a good way to work out.
Tea plantations are littled along the way, and there are many scenic viewpoints, so drive carefully. Look out for the road trip convoys of motorbikes.

The drive to Candi Cetho takes you through sweeping valley vistas dominated by tea estates. Once there, one buys the tickets (minimal cost) and starts the climb. There are various levels and each has its own secrets and symbolism. Apart from the poster at the start there is no explanation but it does not detract from enjoying the temple, even if one is not into history. There are no particularly ornate carvings but there is great symbolism (including a few male phallic objects that symbolise rebirth - not a reason not to take children who will probably enjoy the climb up more than their parents). Combine the visit with Candi Sukuh and lunch at one of the restaurants in the tea estates (and Grojogan Sewu waterfall if you have time and energy).

Combine a visit to Candi Sukuh with your visit to Candi Cetho for a great day trip from either Yogyakarta or Solo. The drive itself is interesting and has some glorious views from the mountains. Candi Sukuh is a small temple with so-called erotic carvings and Candi Cetho is a larger winged temple. Hired a car with driver from a street near Malioboro Road in Yogya for the whole day and stop at Selo for a closer view of Mt Merapi on the way back from Solo.

An ancient temple on a top of a mountainous area. It has wall carving telling about love making arts. Kind of Kamasutra in India, Javanese call it Asmaranggama.
Perfect place for hiking or camping also. But remember, temperature is far below the surrounding cities.

Hi, do we need to book a tour or we can look around the area ourselves? Any halal restaurants there? Also, what is the prices for the tickets for both foreigners and locals?
Written February 25, 2017
Sorry if my answer is late, try searching on Google's Java Private Tour, the company serves a special tour for foreign nationals with various tours on the islands of Java and Bali, last January I was recommended by my embassy to use Java Private Tour services, and the results remarkable. Regarding halal food you don't need to worry, I've explored culinary there with Java Private Tour, and all the restaurants there are halal food. Trust me entrance ticket is very cheap.
