I highly recommend Walnut Grove Cookery School. Beautiful location, comfortable accommodations and most importantly a first class cooking education. The owners, Chef Maynard and Freya, take participants on a well thought out experience that is guaranteed to expand anyone's cooking knowledge, skills and experience. Students have the benefit of Chef Maynard's encyclopedic knowledge of cooking that is efficiently and effectively presented. Teaching is by lecture, demonstration and (mostly) hands on practice of a wide range of cooking techniques. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of serious professional information presented in a fun and engaging manner. Anyone interested in food, cooking and learning will have an outstanding experience at this school.

Great setting. Great comfort. An excellent mix of presentation, variety & difficulty. Chef Maynard could not have been more generous in his attitude or of passing on some of his great knowledge & skills. To say Freya was very attentive and paid attention to our every comfort & and any concerns, would be a wild understatement. And all the food prepared & presented to us was Michelin star quality : all the ingredients were also the best. Enjoyably busy at times but equally fully relaxing. I have no negatives to say. And I was lucky to be in the company of 4 equally keen & inquisitive would be cooks/chefs.

Maynard and Freya the owners of the School are both highly professional and wonderfully human. They run a place where dreams can begin to be formed and give the teaching that can make thiose same dreams come true. Maynard had intended to be an orchestral musician in his youth but fortunately for us changed direction to become a chef. It would be true to say he now plays symphonies with our palates. Freya is the most energetic person I have ever met and her work in keeping the kitchen clean, waiting at table, preparing breakfast and a thousand other things all added to the jiy of this experience. The accommodation is luxurious, the grounds attractive and the kitchen and teaching areas equipped with everything one needs to help improve one's own skills. We were a group of five and our backgrounds so diverse that the times we had for chatting we fascinating. The days spent at Walnut Grove were part demonstration and part hands on. The tips we were given as much as the menus were very valuable and will change how i work in own kitchen at home. The attention to detail was great and I have learnt if you get the preparation right you can enjoy entertaining guests because you can spend more time with them. Already just a week after being there I have put many things into practice and can only say that I hope that what I learnt from Maynard will stay with me for life. Anyone who has an interested in improving their cooking should consider going to Walnut Grove. It is a life enhancing experience and will increase anyone's pleasure in providing good food to friends and families. The standards are high and the chef demanding in a very non 'cheffy '. My days at Walnut Grove where as a result of a gift. I have to say it was one of the best I have ever received. I just loved the place and the people and find the thought of cooking very exciting. If you want to improve your culinary skills you know where to go. I promise.

The Walnut Grove Cookery school is located in the French countryside, a beautiful setting for a cooking vacation. Our lodging was a lovely 200+ year old cobblestone building, very comfortable and spacious. The cooking classes were held in another very old and charming building. Chef Maynard and his lovely wife Freya were welcoming and so hospitable during our stay. The majority of our time was spent in the kitchen. We watched demonstrations, practiced and tried what we had observed, and then helped in all of the cooking preparations. Chef Maynard is an excellent teacher, patient but with high expectations. We learned so many techniques, used such a variety of ingredients, and worked on trying to replicate Chef Maynard's unique and innovative plating designs. The food was scrumptious! A week of fun, laughing, learning, and making new friends. I would highly recommend Walnut Grove to anyone interested in cooking and wonderful food and wine. ❤
