Hagia Sofia is a great choice for eco tourism. It is a 300-acre paradise created by Armando Canavati Nader (and his wife Lorena and named after their daughter Sofia) whose lifetime passion for botany has driven him to cultivate orchards of 1000’s of trees and plants indigenous to Mexico and Southeast Asia. We try to go at least once a year as the place is forever evolving as the plants grow and mature.

Hagia Sofia was an interesting tour with good information about all the plant life and friendly tour guide. The authentic plentiful Mexican food was tasty. The swim in the waterfall and river was so refreshing after a hot walk. The drive from Huatulco was about 1 hour and the tour was 1000 pesos,(60-70 CAD) so definately a commitment. Would reccommend the tour for able bodied adults who are super keen on Mexican agriculture.

This was a highlight of our visit to Huatulco. It turned out to be a private tour: my daughter and I were the only ones visiting that day. Armando picked us up at our hotel at exactly the arranged time. The drive itself was worth the price of admission: Armando is one of the more interesting people I've ever met. He's passionate and knowledgeable about the area and its people (he's from Monterrey, but has spent a lot of time in Oaxaca). He has big plans for Hagia Sofia and they are taking place currently. He's also a deep-thinker: a very interesting man; we enjoyed listening to him and learned a lot. We had a nice breakfast and fresh fruit juice prepared by a very pleasant local lady upon arrival. Then it was on to a tour of the gardens. Armando is a knowledgeable botanist and has a vision for this place. It is really beautiful, all the plants/trees, birds and butterflies. After that, we did the tirolesas/ziplines. First time on a zipline for both my daughter and me. But we got into it quickly. We were well-taught by our guides, Jesus, Israel and Carlos. One of them-Jesus, I think-speaks English very well. In fact, it was helpful for him to speak English with the guests so that he remembers all that he's learned. The others speak only Spanish. But all were outstanding guides: they made sure we were safe and had a great time. Be sure to tip them well; they work very hard and deserve it. After that, it was time for a swim in the waterfall. I wasn't sure how my daughter would do swimming in current-a river-but she loved it. There is a small cave under the waterfall. The water is pristine-a spring-fed river tumbling out of the mountains-and cool even on a hot day. I saw different species of fish while swimming; not sure exactly what they were. Supposedly there are rainbow trout in the river-they may be escapees from a fish farm because they are not native to this part of Mexico. After that, it was time for a delicious lunch and the ride back to the hotel. There are cabins being built on the mountain top. If they are completed next time we are there, we will make it a point to stay there overnight. I would really like to see what the nocturnal wildlife is like around there. I highly recommend a visit to Hagia Sofia. We have great memories of our visit and our time with Armando.

Hagia Sofia is a great way to see the many types of vegetation that are on grown in the area. Most of the plants are brought in for this special jungle treat. Wear appropriate clothing as the walk is hot and lengthy. You'll sample some of the fruits and local foods that are grown. Be carefull though, there were local insects that got into the juice served. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the plants he had introduced to the area. I was impressed by the local efforts to maintain the environment.
