The Church of Amberd is rather unremarkable if you've spent some time already in Armenia. It is small, dark and sparsely decorated. If it was anywhere else, you may not bother to visit.
But it dates back to 1026, sits adjacent to Amberd Fortress at 2,300m above sea level on the slopes of Mt Aragats and overlooks magnificent nature. So it makes for some super-picturesque photography. Worth spending a couple of hours enjoying the location and both attractions.

I went there with my big group(20 people). Going there you can see both the fortress Amberd and of course the church Vahramashen. They're in the same place. The entrance fee is 1500 amd. It is located on the hard to reach place. Scenery is stunning. It's on the gorge. Definitely it's worth to visit there.

The Vahramashen Church, also referred to as the Church of Amberd was built for Prince Vahram Pahlavuni. According to inscription church was completed to the year 1026. The depicted early medieval church you can find at beautiful location close to ruins of Amberd Fortress on slopes of Mt. Aragats in Armenian province Aragatsotn, and near a wall along the promontory with the Arkashian River in the canyon below.
We visited this church and nearby fortress Amberd on the way back from climbing on southern peak of Mt.Aragats. Beautiful place always in clouds, and on autumn could be quite cold.

This Church was built for Prince Vahram Pahlavuni as the name denotes, and probably used by the Amberd fortress people which is about 100 yards before. Located along the Aragats Mountain. Not very important but then at this god forsaken place this might have been a solace to anyone in those days.

Also called the Church of Amberd, it was built begining of the 11th century on a promontory on the slpes of Mount Aragats. It is located next to the Amberd Fortress in an altitude of 2300 m ASL. The exterior is simply decorated with some cross relief designs carved into the walls. Inside remain some kachkar's.
The place is very often visited.

Nice small 11th century church next to Amberd Fortress on Aragats Mount. There is a nice view opening from church to Amberd and to nearby gorge. Highly recommended to visit.

As an Armenian church, Vahramashen Church is actually not very impressive. It is small compared to others, and is even more plain than typical. But what makes Vahramashen Church so utterly amazing is the location. Standing on a towering precipice at the convergence of two rivers, Varhramashen Church provides a commanding view of the entire Ararat Valley. Of all the Armenian churches, I believe only Khor Virap has a more impressive vantage point. Vahramashen only about 100 meters from Amberd Fortress -- you can easily visit both at the same time. Highly, highly recommended.
