An old castle on the Hungarian-Slovak border

We spent a weekend in Somoskoujfalu (Hungary) and took a trip to the castle. It was a nice walk in the nature, but we needed comfortable shoes. We cross the border to Slovakia and saw the unique basalt organ and waterfall. We climbed to the walls of the castle. The view is fantastic, it’s worth to see it.

.Lovely old castle ruins

Very cheap entrance fee to get in. The castle has been lightly renovated to make it safe and accessible for visitors with multiple levels and view points. There's no museum or interior decor, just plain old bare bones walls and floors but the views are fantastic.
The walks in the surrounding forests are filled with basalt 'seas', 'waterfalls' and salamanders. Sturdy shoes are recommended.

Beatiful view from the castle

Hungarian castle now in Slovakia. The view is beautiful and the basalt "organ" is also a must see there.
The castle is not closed so you only have to pay for the visit from 10 till 6 pm. otherwise you can enter free. (It's 1,50€ or 480Ft)

Beautiful walk a in nature reserve

This castle is accessible from two sides. One from Hungary (Somoskoujfalu) with not such a difficult hike. The more interesting hike is from the Slovakia side.
There is a parking spot on the beginning of the trail and your walk begins trough a national nature reserve. On the beginning you can come across many black and yellow salamanders.
Then you go a bit further and you come across basalt sea and basalt waterfall. As the whole place stand on a volcanic base and as a bonus on the top you can find the castle. Really recommend it with the hike. It is about 1,5 km one way. During summer period there is a small entrance fee.
After this castle you can visit the Salgo castle which you can actually see from this one.
