Apr 2014 • Friends
After my first review, I received couple of queries from fellow members regarding planning trek for Harishchandra Gad. Hence I thought of writing detailed review once again; which can also be travel guide.
I have been to Harishchandra Gad 6 times now. Latest being Apr-14. My other 5 trips have been in months of Monsoon.
Trust me it's a mind blowing place for trekking. There are three routes to reach the top. Namely via Khireshwar (6-7 hrs), via Pachani (3-4 hrs), via Nali or Nalichi waat (6-7 hrs).
I have never been via Nalichi waat. My 5 monsoon treks have been via Khireshwar & last Apr-14 one was done via Pachani. Its min 2 days trek, do not plan for one day return that's not possible. It will take 2.5 hrs journey from Pune to base villages.
A word of Caution: Khireshwar & Nali routes are meant of seasoned trekkers or determinant people with good stamina; these routes are very exhausting & also challenging.
Harishchandra Gad is second highest peak of Maharashtra. The place is very basic, remote & though you get everything to take care of your basic necessities, it hasn't evolved to an extent where you can book in advance; advance booking is not required either. You don't need advance booking for going back to your mother nature.
Beauty of this trek is you have combination of all thrilling ingredients. Long patches of dense forest, steep rocky terrain, great height, scenic valleys, rustic old temple & caves for dwelling. You will get many breath taking views of nature as you climb on. The best period to visit is Sep. & early Oct. Also you can be rest assured that your trip will be very cost effective as NO hi-fi resorts, fancy food, car transfers are present here.
Khireshwar route is easiest (by means of road access) of the three routes mentioned above. I am explaining here the details of “Khireshwar Route” via travelling from Pune. This Trek is manageable in 2 days but it can be taxing for your body. I would suggest you to spare 3 days if possible.
If you are travelling by your own vehicle then you can reach the base village (Khireshwar) via Aale Phata (small town on Pune-Nasik Road) & then Khubi Phata (a small stop on Aale Phata-Malshej ghat road) route from Pune.
If you are looking for public transport then you can board a State Transport bus from Pune (Shivaji Nagar bus Stand) for going to "Aale Phata". As Aale Phata is on Pune-Nasik route, any ordinary express bus going to Nasik, Sangamner, Amalner will do. You can search & book the bus from MSRTC website; reservation is highly recommended as normally these buses are crowded. Normally journey to Aale Phata should take 2 hrs. approx. Fare will be around Rs. 80/90.
Once you reach Aale Phata (Aale Phata has proper Bus Depot), you will have to board another bus going to "Khubi Phata". Khubi phata is small stop which connects you to base village of Harishchandra Gad.
To reach Khubi Phata, six sitter diesel rickshaws are also available but they take more stops, travel slow & thus take more time. Aale Phata to Khubi Phata is about 1 hr journey & bus fare should be less than Rs. 50.
The bus will drop you at Khubi Phata & will continue her onward journey. You will find one very rough & dusty long road disappearing somewhere in midst of mountains. You are supposed to take that route; in fact that's the only road present there if you discount the main road. Its approx. 3-4 km walk till base village (Khireshwar). There is one restaurant available just at the start/junction. It is advisable to have some food there. The restaurant owner also provides drop facility to base village (Khireshwar) but he will quote high rate like Rs. 400/500. Take your call. I would prefer walking. After covering those 3-4 km you reach base village "Khireshwar"; a small & scenic village. You can sense isolation, silence & adventure.
This is the last point where you will get shops to purchase something; in case you have forgotten something essential during packing your bags. This is actual starting point of your trek. Also you will need to ask direction for upward route here to local villagers. Though route is simple it’s difficult to explain the landmarks in text. The locals are very cooperative & they will explain you properly. Depending on confidence level of group (or lack of it), you can ask for guide at this place. Guide will typically charge you Rs. 300 to 500; depending on your bargaining skills.
Please make sure that you carry enough water once you start climbing. Once you start from Khireshwar, it will take 6-7 hrs (depending on your speed) to reach the top. The beauty of scenery you get to see is something beyond my words.
Once you reach the top, you will be staying in old stone caves (staying there is of course free). There are 6-7 caves of different sizes; together all can accommodate 50-60 people. Some villagers (4-5 people) stay nearby to caves in small temporary shacks & they make food arrangement for the trekkers. Do not expect any fancy menus here; you won't need them either. After exhaustive climb a regular dal-roti, chawal served by these villagers will state awesome to your tongue. The typical charges for food are Rs. 5 tea, Rs. 20 poha, Rs. 25 maggie, Rs. 80 meal- sabzi roti/dal chawal.
Near to caves, there is very old Shiva Temple. I have heard that it was constructed in 6th century. There two famous points to visit. Taramati point & Kokan kada. Both offer breathtaking views. Kokan Kada is something which you shouldn’t miss. Don't go by photos, photos do not do justice to mighty views visible from this place. Courtesy to points mentioned above, you will surely have an experience to cherish for lifetime.
As mentioned earlier, Kokan Kada & taramati point are the main attractions. You can roam around, spend some leisure time on lap of the nature, and click zillion of photos.
While returning, you will have to follow same route back (Harishchandra Gad-Khireshwar-Khubi Phata-Aale Phata-Pune).
Make sure you carry the following: Instant Pain-Relief Spray, Paracetamol for Cold/mild fever, Glucose Powder, adequate snacks (you feel hungrier here), Sleeping bag or tarpaulin sheet+Blanket, Torchlights (at least 3 for group of 5), rugged footwear, extra pair of undergarments.
If there's a nature+adventure lover inside you then this is the place you shouldn't miss. Also if you are listing out the things to do before you turn 30 then take my word put monsoon visit to Harishchandra Gad on top of the list.

Aug 2018 • Friends
We visited this fort on 4th & 5th of August 2018 i.e. a week ago.
We started from Vishrantwadi in Pune at 7.45 am.
A) Following three routes to reach Khireshwar or Paachnai the base village of Harischandragadh fort.
Please use GPS.
1. Pune Vishrantwadi to Khireshwar Via Alephata (130 km)
a) Vishrantwadi, Moshi or Alandi, Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Manchar, Narayangaon, Alephata, Otur, Bankar Phata, Dingore, Dattawadi, Kolewadi, Karanjale, Khubi Phata, Khireshwar
GPS shows the above-mentioned route i.e. the left side road of Pimpalgaon Joga Dam. On route one villager advised us for the right-side road of dam to reach Khireshwar.
On reaching the dam wall, we drive on the road of dam wall to reach other side i.e. right side of dam & finally to Khireshwar. From dam it is 18 km. It is a very scenic route. I have attached photos of it.
Landmark Sairaj Restaurant on right side of main road near to dam wall: Take right turn before Sairaj restaurant. The route is given below.
b) Vishrantwadi, Moshi or Alandi, Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Manchar, Narayangaon, Alephata, Otur, Bankar Phata, Dingore, Dattawadi, Kolewadi, Cross Dam, Sabalewadi, Kolhewadi, Nageshwarwadi, Khireshwar
2. Pune Vishrantwadi To Khireshwar Via Junnar (110 km)
Vishrantwadi, Moshi or Alandi, Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Manchar, Narayangaon, Junnar, Hadsar, Khireshwar
3. Pune Vishrantwadi To Paachnai Via Alephata (164 km)
Vishrantwadi, Moshi or Alandi, Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Manchar, Narayangaon, Alephata, Otur, Brahmanwada, Kotul, Kothale, Paachnai
B) Tips on Harischandragadh fort trek routes:
1. Paachnai (one & half to 2 hours) very easy trek
2. Khireshwar (4 plus hours) a medium difficulty rocky patch of very short distance
3. Naalichi Vaat (7 plus hours) a tough trek, one has to use rope a lot to trek using this option
The road is via Khubi Phata, Sawarne, Moroshi, Naalichi Vaat.
C) Food or snacks availability & shelter for overnight stay
1. At Khireshwar village: Few restaurants are there who will also provide shelter for overnight stay
2. On trek route: 3 to 4 tea and snacks center are there run by the local villagers
3. On top of fort: 10 to 12 huts are there who caters for food as well as shelter for overnight stay
4. On top of fort: There are caves in the temple for shelter overnight stay
NB: For toilet it is open area.
D) On our trek
Using route 1b option above we reached Hotel Aishwarya of Khireshwar village at 1.00 pm.
We were very much relieved when the Hotel Aishwarya owner said there are 10 to 12 village huts on top of fort who cater to food meal for trekkers & also they provide shelter for trekker’s overnight stay.
We hired a guide for Rs.500/- for one way up trek & started our trek at 1.10 pm from Hotel Aishwarya.
We observed few more restaurants after Hotel Aishwarya. From Hotel Aishwarya it is 1 km plus road till actual trek start point. So, if you are in your vehicle then drive till the last restaurant nearest to actual trek start point.
There were 3 tea and snacks shelter before reaching top of fort & further 3 tea & snacks shelter after reaching top of fort.
On reaching top of fort at around 5.15 pm the guide asked us to choose the route thru left side one hill route or right side seven hills route.
He said thru one hill road it is 1 plus hour walk & seven hills route will take additional 45 minutes more. So, we chose one hill route. I have read that seven hills route is very scenic.
Reached the main temple of Harischandragadh fort at 6.30 pm.
We visited the temple, saw the caves which were already occupied then thru guide we approached one hut for overnight shelter.
Hut owner said he will charge for food & stay free. He said Rs.150/- for unlimited meal of Bhakari, 1 vegetable, rice & dal. One of our new trek friends bargained it for Rs.100/-.
Later in person I told our new trek friend that never ever to bargain with these poor innocent hardworking souls & instead give them more happily for making such an important arrangement of food & shelter for trekkers on top of fort.
Hut owner made camp fire for us.
We had dinner around 9.30 pm & went to bed at 10 pm.
Next day morning had breakfast of pohe & tea. the hut owner said total Rs.750/- total charges for night dinner plus breakfast of pohe & tea. I requested my group to pay Rs.1000/-. They agreed happily.
At our request the guide stayed overnight on fort. So, he was also compensated by paying Rs.200/- more.
After visiting one more temple on next morning we started descending fort at 9 am &
reached Hotel Aishwarya at 1.45 pm.
E) Rain, Very Heavy Winds & Fog
1. During our up trek: Rain & fog was continuously there.
2. During our stay on top of fort: Rain, Very Heavy Winds & Fog continuously there during night as well as in morning
3. During our down trek: Rain & fog was continuously there.
Rain fog totally spoilt our sightseeing plan thro out our entire trek journey as we could see only rain & fog. We totally missed all the spectacular & magnificent views of Kokankada as well as Harischandragadh fort on account of rain & fog.
F) Waterfalls
Only good thing of our trek was that we were able to see scenic waterfalls & also a reverse waterfall on top of opposite mountain from rocky patch location of trek route. I have attached photos of waterfalls.
During monsoon season, rain & fog totally mask the scenic beauty all around the fort & we are left with only option of watching waterfalls, rain & fog.
G) Best One Day Plan To Visit Harischandragadh Fort
For this option you have to choose Paachnai the base village of Harischandragadh fort.
1. Start very early morning between 5 to 6 am to reach Paachnai around 11 am
2. Two hours trek (11 am to 1 pm)
3. Do sightseeing as you like for three hours (1 to 4 pm)
4. Return trek of 2 hours (4 pm to 6 pm)
5. Return journey to reach Pune by 11 pm
NB: It is a very hectic to do a trek in one day using Khireshwar route.
It is our longest trek & worth visiting Harischandragadh fort when sky is clear & pleasant.
I rate this fort very high for it’s amazing videos & photos seen on google search.
We have decided to visit Harischandragadh fort once again after September 2018.
Cheers

We went to see the 'Firefly Festival' in Purushwadi and came to know that Harishchandragad Fort is nearby. There are 3 routes to trek up the fort. We chose the easiest one through Paachnai village. It took us 3 hours to ascend and 1.5 hours to descend and we spent about 1.5 hours at the top. The trek is moderately difficult and passes through some beautiful waterfalls. You will be rewarded with spectacular valley views from the top. Above, you can visit Harishchandragad temple, Sapttirtha Pushkarni lake, Kedareshwar cave, Taramati peak and a cliff named Konkan Kada. You can even camp for a night at the top.

This is an excellent weekend Trek. Previous reviewers plus a quick search on the internet will explain details, however here are my tips from my visit this September (monsoon)
Kireshwar village, start of our trek is reached across the lakeside raised road (causeway), When we visited this was a dirt road and very very muddy. Our gypsy made it but be careful in a 2wd car on a rainy day.
We parked on a villagers drive for a small donation (we gave, they did not ask)
The path up is marked by white arrows, be careful as the paint has worn. Look carefully to avoid getting lost.
The path is littered by broken inappropriate footwear (flip flops), suggest sturdy shoes are worn.
We slept in the second cave, dry and warn (no tent)' some people had tents inside the caves, if you take a tent, ensure it is free standing as pegs have nothing to bang into.
Suggest inflatable mat if you value some comfort, the cave floor is stone, and very hard. If you want privacy, suggest you camp on a meadow, the caves fill up and are noisy way into the night.
Unless you start early, before 9, or want a night hike, be prepared to stay overnight. We didn't walk fast but it took 5 hours up and 3.5 hours down, not including stops at temple and fort.
Hope this helps
PS- Even this impressive beautiful path is in places spoiled by stupid unthinking Trekkers too lazy or stupid to take their rubbish with them.

All the people have written much about this, so I am not writing anything new. I just want to share one thing, if you are planning for this trek please wear full sleeve and full covered clothes, there are too much flies ( soemthing similar to Mosquito ) which continuously bite and pierce our skin to consume blood, its even more harmful than the mosquitos, your skin will be swollen near the area where it is bit and the pain/itching last for 2-3 days. so avoid doing the trek in shorts and half sleeve t-shirts.

One of my most favorite places, during my trekking since 1988, Harishchandragad scores in top 10 places in my trekbook.in directory.
If you wish to have breath taking views, this is a must to visit. Remember that this is medium to hard level of trek, you need to walk for ~18 kms (to and fro)
Over the years now local people have started hotels so we could get ready and hot food on the top.
Do read complete fort information and trek do's and don't on trekbook.in

Mighty Sahyadri always amazed people...
Harishchandragad is located in UNESCO world heritage site known as Western Ghat.
Why to Go harishchandragad ?
If you are trekker and you love a steef valleys and running clouds, Cold air, Infinite horizon you must go to this place. Early morning is best time to explore fort as you can see mesmerizing play of clouds with delight sunlight by taking sip of tea sitting on edge of KOKANKADA. Wohhhh!! Feeling is great. Nevertheless sunset is Best to takeout all tiredness from you and your life.
When to go?
If you want to experience the view I posted. Go in winter season. If you want to take a look of never-ending horizon and land you should go in summer or probably post Mansoon.
What to explore?
Harishchragad blessed with many historical monument. Temple, Lake and many more. Also If you visit post manosoon around Nov - Dec. You can experience different type of flower.
At last; " Explore more than You can"
Note: Please Keep Nature Clean.

In general there are three different routes to Harishchandragad fort trekking. One is Nalichi vat which is comparatively difficult & would suggest to avoid, second is from Khireshwar side via Tolarkhind which is medium but longer route that may take 4-5 hours to climb up & last is from Pachnai village which is the easiest route & hardly take two hours to climb up. We were a group of 5-6 families, with kids from age group 8yrs to elders 45yrs of age & were looking forward for midnight trek on a full moon day hence took the easiest route via Pachnai village.
Started from Pune on Saturday afternoon 3:00pm with Pachnai village approximately 180kms. There are again two, one is via Otur, Bhramagad, Akole while second is Straight to Sangamner via Nashik highway & then to Akole finally reaching Pachnai village. Route via Sangamner is better though could be slightly longer. Reached Pachnai village at 11:00pm. There are many homes serving Good home cooked food with limited menue of Bajara bhakri cooked on chula, pitla, potato, pickles etc. But it's really good & can avail it. No restaurants around. After dinner the local family help us to fire a camp fire for the entire group followed by some songs & dance. Some of us took time to rest, infact I was fast asleep. As it was midnight trek, we hired two guides from the family to avoid getting missed on the way.
Our guide woke us up by 3:00am in the morning. With some basic tips on how to climb, what to avoid, How to stay with the group we started climbing up. one of them was leading the group while second followed from behind ensuring that no one stays behind. Being a full moon night, it was very much bright night & could easily see the route & trees around though majority of us were carrying torch but on full moon night it's not needed. It worked as a safety. On the way never felt like we were trekking during summer as the temperatures had already dropped down to chilling limits & as we climbed up felt need of windcheaters or shawls to keep us warm. Climb route is comparatively easy but it's always suggested to take a guide. They can Help in case of any mishap or emergency. We stopped in the mid way where the single route gets divided like a 'Y' shape to ensure the entire group comes together & after half an hour again started climbing up. Finally reached the fort entry point at Ganesh temple at morning 5:00am & then to Kedareshwar temple by 5:30am. By now it was already getting brighter hence the guide suggested to move on to Kokankada for witnessing sunrise. It took hardly another 20-30minutes & we were standing on the might Kokankada. It worth watching the morning view from here. Difficult to explain in words. Stayed there for another one hour. By the time our breakfast was arranged by the same local family at Kokankada. Finished off selfies & breakfast by 8:00am hence decided to explore the fort till 9:30am. Points to be visited are Kokankada, Ancient Caves, Kedareshwar temple, Ganesh temple etc. If you still have some energy, some of us futher went up to Taramati peak which is another 20-30 minutues from Kedareshwar temple.
Finally started climbing down by 9:30am & reached Pachnai village by 11:30am. Decided to have early lunch with same menu as had for dinner with some change in vegetables & took some rest under the tree shadow with sunny afternoon. Started for Pune at 02:00pm & finally reached home 08:00pm. Overall was a excellent midnight trek experience. Would surely be looking forward to revisit this fort either in rainy or winter season. It's worth doing this trek but in groups to enjoy it in complete sense.

For the regular trekkers, Harishchandragad (Hgad) is more than just a mere weekend getaway; it is more like a second home! This place has an aura and energy of its own that each trekker soaks in. It's an experience far greater to be captured into this review!
Nested in the Hgad-Kalsubai range, the Taramati peak (around 4500 feet) at Hgad is the second highest point in Maharashtra, only marginally behind the highest point Kalsubai peak. Some would even recommend visiting it more than Kalsubai since Hgad has more spots to visit and plus it always feels like home! Places to visit include the Hgad temple, Konkan kada, Kedareshwar shiv ling, and Taramati and Rohidas peaks. Although Hgad has huge caves to shelter its trekkers, the best experience is to camp at the Konkan kada. Separate water cisterns available for drinking and washing purposes. Please note that "nature calls" have to be attended outdoors.
Hgad can be reached through five different routes - Mahadarwaza (now closed), Nalichi vaat, and 3 routes starting from the villages of Khireshwar, Pachnai and Lavhali. Nalichi vaat (path through a gorge) is the toughest route and has 80 degree steep climbs. The path through Khireshwar (takes 5-6 hours) and Pachnai (takes 2-3 hours) are the most treaden. One can reach Khireshwar via Malshej Ghat on the road towards Ahmednagar. For Pachnai, one has to take the Kasara-Nasik highway. All locations are well-located in Google maps, hence travel should not be problem. No water available en route the top, so water bottles should be refilled in the base villages itself. Best season to visit is Oct-Feb although you can visit this any time except summers; gets a bit tricky in monsoons.

If you want to spend a weekend that you will cherish for the lifetime then you should take up this trek to Harishchandragad.
It starts after a long bus drive of 180kms from Pune when you reach the base village named Pachnai - from there its a 2-3 hours climb to a place called Konan Kada - where you can spend your night under the moon in a tent. You will see beautiful place on the way including a Shiva temple, cave and exciting landscape.
As many photos you click you will never be satisfied.
