    The best
Words fail to describe Dougga : it is an superb example of a Romanized Numidian City, with Punic and Hellenistic influences thrown in. It is also a huge site of 75ha with everything you would expect in a respectable Roman city : capitol, forum, temples, baths, brothel, theatre, circus and toilets. It is also a rare example where even UNESCO raves about its authenticity and level of preservation. For me it was the highlight of my visit to Tunisia.

    Mandatory archaeological stop
If you are in Tunis for a few days, an excursion to the archaeological areas of the West is a precise tourist duty. The Dougga area has a particular charm for the vast typology of buildings in good condition, from the theater to the Libyan-Punic mausoleum, passing through the Forum and the Capitolium. Congratulations to the local guide who accompanied me on the visit (which lasted a good hour), an archeology student with excellent command of the Italian language.

    A History buffs dream
We arrived at Dougga later in the morning and literally had the site to ourselves. With our guide, we made our way around learning about life in ancient times. 80% of site is original and built on a hill, so be prepared with good footwear, some form of shade (umbrella) and water. Small concession available for drinks. This is an open air museum and drowning on your interest level, you could spend an hour or much longer.

    Go. Just go.
The high number of Excellent reviews are well earned, and the site is well worth the two hour drive from Tunis. Dougga is absolutely spectacular, not just in what it contains, but in site preservation. Many others in this review chain have added photos and described the site well, so this review cannot add anything in that regard, but there are some practicalities to mention. Although one can certainly explore the site unaccompanied, hiring a guide with a vehicle will not only simplify your visit, but make your time there come alive because the site is not particularly well signed. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a visit, take water with you, wear sunscreen because there is no shade, and try some food from one of the roadside vendor shacks you will pass to/from the site. Once you have visited there is no doubt you will add your "Excellent" review to the others here.

    World Heritage Site
Dougga was a Berber, Punic and Roman settlement near present-day Téboursouk in northern Tunisia. Amazing archaeological site. UNESCO qualified Dougga as a World Heritage Site in 1997. It represents "the best-preserved Roman small town in North Africa". Be ready for a good walk with suitable shoes. We visited The Theatre, The Temple, The Market Place and many others.

    17 Centuries of History
UNESCO Heritage site since 1997. Two-thirds of the site is still in the ground. Marcus Aurelius built this fine city in the 2nd Century. Marvel at the public baths, public toilets and efficient drainage systems as well as fresh water channels. See temples, forum and easily imagine this place populated and people going about their daily lives. Check out the weather forecaster carved into stone beneath your feet in front of the Temple.

I had the chance to meet Karim a taxi with a 9-seater vehicle.
I was able to hire his services for a whole day round trip to go from Hammamet to Dougga for €150.
If you only have to make one visit to Tunisia I recommend this one, it's extraordinary.
The buildings from the Roman era are still standing and date back over 2000 years.
Certainly the journey is 2h30 but there is a very adventurous aspect because not too much tourism. We found old pottery engravings on the ground as well as mosaics which appear abandoned but in an exceptional state of conservation.
At the top you will find a small bistro where you can refresh yourself and have a coffee.
There are also toilets.
For catering, bring a sandwich that you can enjoy at the café or buy something to eat in the village before the climb to Dougga.
Talk to Karim, he will organize everything for you and will take care of you, he is not a person in a hurry, he takes the time to stop for a mint tea at the side of the road and make you experience a day to the fullest pleasant. Entrance to the site costs around €3.
Do not hesitate to ask for airport hotel transfers, the journey costs around €50. He can even offer you a trip to Carthage before taking the airport for €20 to €25 more for the half-day.
Tel or WhatsApp +216 98 307 201.
Good to you

After visiting the selection of colosseums, baths, amphitheaters, and reservoirs throughout Tunisia ... this was my favourite site. The successful excavation and presentation of the site add to its impressive contents which have been left more intact than other places due to its prior relative inaccessibility.
Go in the morning to avoid excessive heat as well as the mass tourist coaches.

A must-visit when you are in Tunis. The ruins have a lot of historical significance and many of them are well-preserved. The panoramic view from the site is magnificent.

The trip takes nearly 80 min by shared taxi (louage) from Bab Saadoun station near central Tunis to Téboursouk. From there, take a taxi for 12 TND to the site. I recommend asking the driver for a pickup on an agreed time for an additional 12 TND. 2 to 2 1/2 hrs should be enough to view the whole place.
Bab Saadoun is 2km away from Tunis Medina but walkable if you like to walk around and explore your surroundings.

I was here in Nov 21 and there was not a soul at the site. I was all by myself, meandering through the forum, the capitol and the various mansions from a more fancier time. So beautiful and well preserved! The city is spread out and various aspects of it require you to walk uphill and downhill consistently. The marbled floors are also susceptible to slipping while walking.

You could easily spend 2-3 HRs here and it is not wheelchair friendly. Lot of walking involved and no boutique or coffee shops within a mile.

Located about two hours outside of Tunis, it's well worth the ride. Dougga was incredibly well-preserved. Unlike Pompeii and Herculaneum, Dougga was just abandoned for unknown reasons and was covered up with dirt. I would recommend getting a guide though there are signs. The signs are multi-lingual and while good, a guide would really make the city comes to life. Even with the guide, we still looked at the signs to see the artist renderings of what the city looked like in its prime.

Also, there very clean bathrooms, there is a gift shop and a place for coffee.

Walked from Dar El Medina hotel in Tunis medina to Gare Routiere Nord at Bab Saadoun for a Louage (shared taxi) about 25 mins. Louage to Teboursouk cost 8 TDM per seat each way and took about 75 mins. Louage driver will put you in contact, or drop you off at a taxi for the second part of the journey, Teboursouk to Dougga. We paid 25 TDM for a return Taxi including waiting time. The journey is about 15 mins, the taxi driver will either wait or return to pick you up at an agreed time.
It was extremly hot today but we did the whole site in 90 mins. Absolutely fantastic Roman site with ampitheatre, temples baths, streets and houses. Entrance fee 8 TDM
A small cafe and shop to buy drinks before taxi and louage back to Tunis.

Photos don’t do justice to Dougga. It’s one of the most impressive Roman ruins outside of Italy. I recommend touring with a guide as you’ll get a lot more out of your visit.

I rate it a must see sight if you’re in Tunis.

It’s a magnificent archeological site. It’s a whole Roman city. It’s not as complete as Pompeii, but it rivals with Jerash, in Jordania, the biggest roman city I had seen outside of Italy.

It covers a big area; you might want to spend a couple of hours or more, and bring comfortable shoes, water and a hat. There are bathrooms available, but no other tourist facilities.

The theatre is one of the best preserved I’ve seen, similar to Taormina. There are temples, forums, markets, baths and houses with well paved streets. If you go to Tunisia, it’s a must.

We discovered this exceptional site accompanied by a very pleasant guide Mona
For two hours she transported us into history, we were all attentive to her very enriching explanations.
Too bad this site is not indicated from the highway because we searched a lot
The place, no indication, no sign, just upon arriving at Tabersouk there is a small sign indicating ruins of Dougga.

Really not to mention missed if you are in Tunis.

Quite extensive and well preserved Roman and Berber ruins and roads. Temples. Houses. Communal toilets. Forum. Capitol. Theatre. Arches. Baths. Shops. Water reservoirs. Etc etc.

I had a lovely knowledgable guide who I met on site and she showed me round with great knowledge.

The most memorable sight for me was the wind gauge marked on stone. I think it is called a “rose de vent”.

Also the beautifully preserved paved streets with stones at a diagonal to help the horse or mule get traction on the hills.

A great pleasure to visit and if you are at all interested in Roman history and architecture is worth the trip.
