The Parque Ecologico and Museo are on the top of a mountain above the community Dulce Nomber de Maria. My friend's husband found both the community and the park on line in the US and recommended we see them on a free day in Chaletenango. Most of the buildings in the community have paintings on them, and, of course, there's always the church to see. Also, not to be missed are the fresh papas fritas in the market. The 10km road from the community is not paved; nor is it smooth gravel. It's a rough, rocky road. We drove it in a car, but a pick up or SUV would be better. The drive and the views are beautiful. The land for the park was preserved by a now retired university professor who lives there and raises plants. It's a communal park, and most of the residents were combatants in the war from 1980-1992. Jeremiah, our guide, fought and lived there during the war and since. He was very proud of the battles in which the rebels defeated the government troops. There is an optional hike to the river to see the falls, which we did. The small museum memorializes those who died in the war with photos and stories. There are war artifacts as well as Mayan artifacts. Cabins are available for those who want to stay in the cool, clear mountain air and perhaps swim in the river.
