Great view but castle seems to be permanently closed
Sep 2020
The castle itself has evidently been closed for several years, and the area immediately around it is in a bad state of repair. The castle lower walls have graffiti on and it seems like a place where people go from the town to do things they'd rather others didn't see. It's a real shame because the view from this spot is probably worth the difficult journey through what I thought was rather an unpleasant and ridiculously busy town (what I saw of it), and past little roads used for flytipping. You get a fantastic view of groves of citrus trees and the other way of Etna. It's quite a large area there for some reason but seems to be used as part of a one way system to get round that part of town. Nearby is a church with an extremely grand pathway up from the town (also shut) and a fascinating cemetery. Some of the mausoleums in there are fantastically elaborate examples of different architectural styles such as art deco and modernist 50s/60s styles. Some even have stained glass. I wish I had been able to look around for longer but I needed the loo and there was simply nowhere nearby open.

Neat to see once

It is okay. You can't go in and trash all around it. Don't make a special trip, but see it if you are in Paterno.

It's old but you can't get in
Oct 2017 • Couples
Interesting to see, it's a huge walk up hill, but you can't get in. As it's the only thing, apparently, worth seeing, you must do it.

Seen it a couple of times. Nice for night view of the town and stars. Take a pizza to go and go up for a night picnic

Wonderful castle keep but closed
Nov 2016 • Couples
I was really looking forward to visiting this historic site and had planned to visit primarily to see it. However the castle was not open and there was graffiti everywhere. It was a real pity as it looks so interesting. However to see it on the outside and the views was still enjoyable but there were not any information boards to explain it and no opening times indicated.

I guess here people do not give much importance to what's left of their history as this castle was closed together with another chiesa in the vicinity. although from the outside it looked great and one may admire the lovely view of the city from the balcony.

We went on Sunday so the castle was closed. The area was quite. Wonderful views to the countryside and the full width of Mount Etna.

It's a shame this place is not kept better!

We were here on a Sunday. Found the castle closed and the stairs smelled terribly after pee :-(. Lots of graffiti on the walls of the castle and the church. Lots of rubbish. Cemetary was also closed. This potential beautiful place felt like a ghosttown to us. Such a shame!!

Unusual site beautiful views

We got here just as it opened. It is unusual in that it is built of lava and it is built on a wonderful site giving fantastic views. On English castle standards I would call it small, more like a fort but it is still well worth a visit.

I was told it was similar to the castle in Motta but it was a lot bigger that I expected it to be. The view is pretty amazing, I wish I would have had an english speaking guide - I think it would have been more interesting. You can ask the guy at the desk for book that gives some information on the history and uses of the rooms.
