Explore without being resticted by Health & Safety

The most amazing thing about this Centuries Old Castle Keep is that it is open to the public with no Health & Safety Zealots overseeing your exlporation of this well preserved Tower. If you dare go up the very narrow spiral stone staicase you will be rewarded with excellent views of the surrounding landscape and a very unusual oriel stone munioned window. A 'must visit' if you are in the area.

Fascinating
May 2021
The tower is interesting but not huge. From the tower you can go down to the river to both look up and get a better impression of the tower and go for a very pleasant walk along the river bank. Overall time about 45 minutes

WONDERFUL HISTORIC STRUCTURE AND FREE TO VISIT
Dec 2019
History lovers will marvel at this place. The setting is tranquil, the tower hauntingly impressive and the views from the first floor are very impressive. We spent far more time there than we intended as the whole experience is fascinating. Well worth a look but pointless going beyond the first floor as there is nothing to see.

Pleasant walk from the village

The Marmion tower situated next to the church was the former gatehouse of Tanfield castle. Around it ancient houses suggest a former religious settlement

Lovely views
May 2019
You can park just along the lane from the tower. Although it’s private the other side you can walk down to the river bank for a side on view. Best of all though you can climb up the stairs to the first floor for great views. Don’t bother climbing to the top though as it doesn’t go anywhere.

Terrific views
Mar 2019 • Couples
Another one of those places we have passed many times but never visited so one day we did. After climbing up a quite steep and dark staircase you come out into room from which you get some terrific views of the river and surrounding area.

An attractive 15th century gatehouse.
Feb 2019 • Couples
This tower and the adjacent church are just off the main road through the village. The tower, which dates from the 15th century, used to be the gatehouse for a Manor House that is no longer there. With its oriel window it is an attractive structure, and the short climb to the upper floor affords nice views of the village, river and surrounding countryside.

Lovely

What a lovely bit of history you can just walk into for free at any time. Always have a look round when in the village. Gorgeous tower that must have been beautiful in its day
