About
Discover the largest site of the Marais Poitevin and cathedral builders in the heart of exceptional remains! Fortress, cathedral and abbey, the Benedictine Abbey St Pierre founded 1000 years ago by the powerful Duke of Aquitaine William the Great, bore the marks of the history of art.Overlooking the marsh's canals dug by the monks, the cloister, the underground reserves and the church emerge from the soil in an original dynamic recovery.

Although only some of the buildings have survived time, the site gives a good idea of the vastness and importance of the abbey. The magnificent implantation and attractive surroundings valorize the abbey even more.

Read in leaflet that dogs were allowed and travelled 100 km to find they aren't. This meant two members of our party couldn't visit.
There is no logical reason for banning dogs from this site.
We saw about twenty people turned away while we were there due to this illogical rule!
Spoilt a long planned day out.

I recommend you to go for the visit at 10.30, it last around 60 minutes, and then watch the small act called Le Marin des Marais, it last around 30 minutes and finish with the 15 minutes movie.
Cost for the wall visit is 7 euros (adult)
This will give you the main information about the Abbaye as well as the Marais. Then, have a lunch and continue with a guided tour in the marais. It is closed by (2 minutes) from the Abbaye. There are also some pic nic areas close by.

Great value for money for a truly historical experience. Definitely worth paying the 6 Euros to get in rather than just looking from the street.

Very interesting visit although walking to the top of the Abbey may not be for the unfit and those afraid of heights... seeing a Sparrowhawk close up whilst taking in the scenery made my holiday.

A real effort has been made over the past few years to make this ancient abbey accessible and interesting. If you wish to extend your visit, picnic spaces are available. Alternatively, there is a very good little restaurant just over the road. The situation is wonderful. Do take one of the punts and investigate the waterways.

impressive setting , we were treated to beautiful singing as we arrived , guided tours and a lively show by actors narrating the story of the abbey. A good day and very good value for a 5 euro entrance fee! Well worth visiting!

As a family with young children having the space to roam and explore such an impressive attraction was very welcome. We were surprised by how much access we actually got to the ruins - which certainly do look impressive. We say the 11h30 'show' (which comprised a group of singing actors), and although my French is limited to a GCSE from 1994 we managed to follow the gist of it. The singing itself was seriously impressive. This attraction is well worth a visit!
