Visit Maenam Hill if you want to experience the beautiful forest, night sky full of stars, a beautiful sunrise and one of the best views of Kanchenjunga range. There is also an old monastery. Our tour guide was Outdoorindeed and they made our experience even better. They were just wonderful. I visited the place with my friends and every step was worth it. It is also beginner's friendly.

I am a solo traveller and wanted to trek Maenam Hill. Ravangala-Maenam Hill Trek is one of the very few treks in the north – eastern region which rise to a height of around 10, 600 ft from the sea level of around 8000 ft in less than 5 hours. The entire trek passes through dense forests and huge canopies of oak, hemlock and sub-alpine rhodendrons occupying the majority of the trail and running parallel to the length of the trail. The amazing diversity in the entire flora of the region is a sight to behold.
MY Guide Ugene is really a Genius and is well versed with the place. He a an awesome trekker himself and keeps on motivating untill you reach the peak where the Monastery is situated. The Maenam Hill peak provides a breathtaking and composite view of the snow covered mountains of Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Pandim, Mount Sinoulchu and Mount Kabru.
The vegetation starts changing gradually as one makes way to the top. The bamboo trees in the higher echleons replace the otherwise dense rhodendrons in the lower strata. Every now and then one will come across mountain dogs which provide a good boost to scale the top of the hill. The enthusiasm of those animals stir one’s spirits in a way that the ardous route turns out to be one of the memorable experiences of one’s life.
A small shrine of monastery at the top serves a perfect retreat for a small siesta out in the hills. The shrine is very old and now serves as a resting point.
I had Stayed in a Home stay in Kewzing which is very neat and hygienic including all the meals and the guide it costed me 1850/- per head for a night. You can always contact the guide Eugene - +918348169187 and the Homestay Person - Sharing- +919749324860

We visited Ravangla on 26-29 January, 2017. We also went for a trek to Maenam Hill top on 27th-28th.
The trek route is of 12 kms approx and takes around 5 hours. The trek starts at an altitude of 7000 feet (2133 mtrs) from Ravangla and goes up to 10,500 feet (3200 mtrs). The trail goes through Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary.
Although the trek can be done in a single day if started early morning but we preferred to spend a night at hill top and prepared ourselves accordingly.
We contacted DIKEN RAI (+917584813732) as guide and he arranged everything for us - from tent to sleeping bags, foods to beverages. We were a group of seven people and Diken charged us 1000/- INR per head.
We started at 10 AM and reached the top at around 3 PM. As soon as we reached, it started snow and the snowfall continued till next morning. We had no option but to bunk the idea of campfire, gossiped all the eve inside tent. Meanwhile Diken along with his friend, made Wai-Wai for our dinner and served it hot.
Mesmerizing view it was when we came out of the camp that morning! The snow was almost 6 inches thick! We went to Bhaleydunga first, a huge rock hanging from the cliff providing you 360 degree view (also the highest point of trek) and then started our journey downhill to Ravangla.
We will surely go back soon!

The Mainam Hill to an altitude of about 10,800 ft. distance from Ravnagla is 8 km. but to reach top of the hill you need 12 km trek begins at Ravangla. . Then one enters the Mainam Wildlife Sanctuary. The trek is through the forests of Oak, Pine, Rhododendron, Magnolia and fir. A four to six hour trek from there would bring us to the top of Mainam peak. The view of Kanchenjunga and other peaks are even better from here. Another one and half kilometre uphill trek leads to Bhaledunga, a hilltop offering a different beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. This is a half hour journey from the Mainam top. There is a monastery and an abandoned watchtower in Mainam peak. The Mainam sanctuary is famous for its hospitality to the red panda, Himalayan black bear, leopard cat, black pheasant cat and other endangered animals. It is also a great site for the birdwatcher

Its a short trek Through maenam sanctuary. It takes almost 5.30 hours to reach the top. We (me my 7 years old daughter and my husband and our guide named Subhash) started at 6.30 at the morning and reached the top at around 12.10pm. The trek is not that stiff but it definitely requires some fittness level. Since it was my first trek Ifelt very tired when we reached the top and my daughter felt too sleepy .We stayed there for 45 minutes and started downwards as our guide said that the forest will get darker after 5pm. We reached our hotel at 4.30pm. It really feels good . The view from the hilltop is fabulous and breathtaking. The view of Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Korbu is awesome. Oh we visited there on 30th December 2014.

You don't have to be a pro trekker to climb maenam but definitely require some good amount of physical stamina to climb at an altitude of 11000ft.
Don't try to attempt with old ppl. Children. Patient with cardiac ailments. People having low stamina...or you may have to quit from half the way....
Best time to visit Nov to Feb ....try to avoid in the begining of Oct as I did....coz of rain you may not find any trail at the foot hill and need to find your way by smashing thick vegitation ....
Guide is advisable....
Keep at least 4 Ltd of water and light food with you...as depend upon your physical condition you may en up the whole journey in more than 12 hrs.
Consider to stay at top at night to get the shot for one of he Best sunrise in your life time ......or consider a day trip to feel being engulfed by the cloud at its best ......
Valeyunga is a must journey of another one hour from maenam ....i felt best spot at the top...it's a hanging cliff and will mesmerize you With the view of teesta ....
Enjoy the trek and bring back some wonderful memories.......
Bon voyage.

Maenam Peak trek is a short one day trek that can be completed in 5-7 hours both ways, but you definitely need some fitness levels to undertake the trek. Apart from testing your fitness levels, this trek is a heaven for Bird Watches and discovering medicinal plants that the local villages use.

Trek the Maenam hill which has an altitude of 10,500 feet. Starting from 10.30 am and coming down by 6 pm in the evening will do. A monastery is there at the peak of Maenam.

HI! Is it easy to find group tours for the Maenam Hill and Bhaley Dunga 2 day trek from Ravangla? How much should it cost per person? Do these treks depart on a daily basis from Ravangla? I'm a solo traveller on a budget so finding a group trek to these places would be crutial to comply with my budget! Thanks!

If I want to cover Dzongu and Maenam together what will be the itinerary from NJP in 5N 6D?
Rajjocraft
Kolkata (Calcutta), India30 contributions
Hi,
I have not been at Dzongu. However, being myself in Gurdongmar, I am suggesting you to keep Gurdongmar plan intact and then visit Maenam instead of Dzongu in following-
Given you reach Ravangla from Lachen on day 3, you will have a very little to make arrangements for Maenam trek.
So you can contact Diken Rai @ 7584813732 beforehand. He can make arrangements of sleeping bag, tent, foods for the whole trek only if you are planning to spend overnight at hill top. Also he himself can be the guide.
You can either start for Maenam top on 19th, night stay there and return to Ravangla on 20th, or you can start very early in the morning and come back from hill top on same day.
Snowfall is all luck but December will be freezing, at least expected to be. So if you are planning, to stay at hill top overnight, you must arrange tents and should not rely on the only half broken watchtower there.

Is it safe for asthmatic patient to trek on maenam hill
?
Rajjocraft
Kolkata (Calcutta), India30 contributions
Depends on his/her age, severity of asthma.
The total distance is 12km which is continuous uphill, so you can easily understand. The only thing I can assure, it will be more than tough to do whole trek in one day though. Spending overnight at hill top will be helpful.
I, personally, encourage you to go. If you don't feel okay at any point, you can stop there and return. Keep it simple. :)

Anybody camped at night on Maenam top? I am told that guides are avoiding night camp due to bears and extreme cold? Is that true?
