The bridge was set up to cater the traffic between Howrah and Kolkata. Nowadays, it handles a lot of traffic including goods vehicle. Pedestrians are not allowed to walk over the bridge. View of the Ganges and the Kolkata city from this bridge is amazing.

This bridge was inaugurated in 1992. One of a kind cable stayed bridge in India, on one of the bigger rivers - hooghly. It connects Kolkata to Howrah and Delhi and Mumbai Roads and other National Highways are easily accessed.
