There's a huge underhand racket going on at Nanu Oya station for train tickets and this needs to be cleaned up by the Railways or the relevant tourist authorities. My holiday to Sri Lanka was excellent and would have been complete if I got to travel on the 1st Class Observation car for a few stations either from Nanu Oya to Pattipola or Nanu Oya to Thalawakelle.

The guy who served me at the station counter (Pramuka) found a seat for me to travel from Nanu Oya to Thalawakelle. When I went to pay Rs2,000 for the ticket he didn't want to issue the ticket. Instead he asked me to complete a form where I had to fill the intended travel date, where I wanted to go and my passport details. He promised to call me that evening before 9.30pm but I never heard back from him. I needed to know whether he was able to secure a ticket for me so that I could plan my next day accordingly.

Not sure why he didn't want to sell the available ticket to me to travel to Thalawakelle instead. He initially thought that I was an agent trying to secure a seat. I then told him that I am a passenger and not an agent.

I am very disappointed that I wasn't able to do this train trip. If I paid black market rates to buy a ticket I could have easily secured a seat.

Something needs to be done to clean this mess so that the visitors get a fair chance to enjoy the train journey in Sri Lanka.

Sweet little roadway station. Very clean and tidy. A little chaotic getting tickets for the next train but doable! Best to check at railway station for train times! We caught the 11.10am and had 2nd class u reserved but got a seat. Fab train journey. Highly recommended. We paid usual local fare not hyped prices by travel agents!

We travelled from Nanu-Oya to Demodara which is a 3 hour ride through the mountains, absolutely beautiful.

The reason why we didn’t get off at Ella is because we wanted to see the 9 arch bridge from aboard the train rather than walking 2km along the track.

Nice station, good toilet facilities.

You didn't visit Srilanka unless you have tried the ride to Ella by train, even tho we had a driver all the time, we went by train to experience the ride between tea plantation mountain and the no ending green valley. you can find the best view in all srilanka, hills mountains big valley, green is all over the place, a 2 hour ride that will take you breath away.
Ask the guy who check your tickets to open the doors of the train so you can get a better view.

The train ride is over-rated and not as scenic as advertised. There's really nothing much to be seen except tea plantations (which is almost everywhere, nothing significant or Instagram worthy). The train station dated back to British times and was extremely run down with worn out timber sleepers. I am not sure how safe the trains will be. Inside the platform 'cafe' was a plaque which stated that the catering service was taken over on 1st Jan 1969. The trains ran on diesel and equally ill-maintained. The first class cabin had a distinct smell and 'flavour'. I would say its first class till the early 70s, its no different from 3rd class cabin now. Save your money and hire a van or car.

There was nothing worth taking photos of, well perhaps the back of the seat...

Srilankan most famous train 🚞 leaves from Nanu Oya station (Nuwara Elya, heart of the Tea Country) with destination Ella (and farther).

May I also share my impressions with you, after the 3h30 journey ?

a) despite what you are going to read on travel magazines articles/blogs, the whole ride on train is as scenic as any other through mountain landscapes. I think it's a bit overrated and that won't impress you so much.
b) as an alternative, and in order to experience exclusively the best part of it, I would opt for the very short "Demodara loop" (6 kms long; cost of the ticket 10 LKR = ~0,05€). So catch the train directly in Ella, take a seat on the left side of the carriage/coach and get off at the next station (Demodara itself). You will enjoy the view passing on the NineArchBridge, while being greeted by hundreds of persons too. 😊

There are many tourists struggling to get into the train. It is sad to say SLR is doing nothing to uplift standards of trains. The Minister of transport must be sleeping don't know the real ground situation. Why the railway authorities can't add few more carriage.

A very beautiful train journey to Ella from Nanu Oya. Mist, rains, and beautiful greens. My kids enjoyed it thoroughly so did we. A special mention to my tour operator " My Ceylon Trip, to have arranged the tickets at a very short notice.

I tried three days to get Ella ticket from here but they don’t have tickets for first class at all. In second class you may not get the seats. I took the reverse route and I went to Ella and travelled back to Nanu Oya to enjoy that dream train journey:
