The statue itself is well preserved and nice. Now it is under a roof, which makes it look less impressive than in older photos.
The entrance fee of 1000 LKR is extremely high and totally undeserved for a couple of minutes of looking at a single statue. Makes the whole experience something better to avoid.
Also, the roads in the area are in very bad condition, as a minimum there are 20-30 minutes bumpy ride if you decide to visit the site.

Avukana Buddha statue is generally considered the pinnacle of Anuradhapura era Buddha Statues. Believed to have been constructed in the 5th century AD during the timea of King Datusena, standing at over 14 meters, it will amaze you with its life like features, intricate detailing and the sheer scale.
You can reach Avukana from Thambuttegama, Galewela as well as from Kekirawa side or even via Kurunegala- hiripitiya-Madagalla. A lot of roads around the area were being newly carpeted at the time we visited. Even the access road to the avukana statue was in good condition and you can go down the same road up to kalawewa.
Once you go down the access roads, the Google maps will say you have reached the location when there is nothing in sight! Drive a couple of hundred meters forwards and you will come to a place that looks like park a with small shops etc.
There is ample parking and some small shops selling snacks and drinks. From the main road, there is only a small climb up to the statue. The place is maintained quite well by the army.

This is a magnificent example of our ancient craftsmanship. This is an amazing example of a well preserved standing Buddha statue. It’s a calm and peaceful place. Since this is a religious place behave well dress accordingly and pay your respects.

It was the first stop on our tour of Sri Lanka. We were still dazed from the plane trip, we were catapulted into this oasis of quiet, few tourists, several faithful. We adapted to the rules in force in Buddhist temples, barefoot, knee-length trousers, shoulders covered. Don't take photos with people with their backs to the Buddha, it's not allowed. High entry price, compared to the complex which is not very large.

Entrance fee is 750 LKR. At the moment there are reconstruction works but you still can go down to the bottom of the statue and anywhere else, but making good pictures is quite difficult. It is really impressive and worth seeing it. It's a small place and you won't need much time to visit. When we visited the Aukana Buddha, not too much people where there.

We were quite disappointed to find scaffolding up at the site. If we had known this we would not have taken the detour.
It is clearly an impressive rock carving, but the unfathomably large amount of scaffolding in front of the statue detracted significantly from the experience.
I suggest you check ahead and hopefully someone will post here when the situation is back to normal.

Decided to visit Avukana since I was in the Dambulla area for some other work. The last time I visited this place was about 10 years ago.
Drove to Kekirawa and took the Thalawa road. Then went along the Kalawewa reservoir. Asked for directions at junctions.
It was around 2.30 PM when I visited the place. Just a few foreigners and about 2 locals.
I had the entire place for my self.
I cannot explain the feeling . It was so quite , calm and relaxing.
Stayed for about 1 hour and made a small donation to the temple.
A place worthy of a visit definitely.

Great job done by the craftsman. The Statue was made out of a huge granite rock and it is so beautiful. Now they have made a roof in order to protect the statue from the wind and rain. Recommend to any tourist who is interested in the history of Sri Lanka and Buddhism.

The 12 meters statue of a standing Buddha was masterfully carved out of granite stone sometime in the 5th century. Apparently it is one of the best examples of a standing statue in Sri Lanka, thus quite popular, although at the time of our visit there was no one else there. Very much worth a short stop...

Situated in north central province close to kekirawa
Passing the huge tank in Kalawewa you can reach the place.
Here you can see a stormy statue of Lord Buddha.
its very big and the work is so neat and wonderful
The important thing is that he did it with out any sophisticated machines or equipment s
This is a must in your list of attraction
