historic renaissance manor

a bit disappointing considering the very interesting historic background; worth seeing though as a transition between the medieval period and the early italian Renaissance

Hidden gem. An absolute delight

Ango was a very rich maritime Governor of the thriving port of Dieppe and the buildings demonstrate his status and wealth. Now partly dilapidated, you can still enjoy the splendour from the past of both the Manoir and the grounds. It's one of those treasures that you come across in France, that makes the country so special. The leaflet to guide you around is helpful (not too bad English).

The most beautiful residence of Normandy...............

This place is so different...its fantastic, feel as you have walked into the 14 century, the Chatelet, the Loggia ( the upper floor is being renovated so closed ), the Dovecote, the East Wing, the Kitchen, and sitting room, have a warmth about them. As a photographer I spent all morning ( opens at 10am till 12.30 ) there was just so much too see.

A wonderful discovery in Haute Normandie

The woman at the kiosk selling tickets in the parking area is very welcoming and shared a lot of history about the place before we set off (in French). You also get a brochure with your entry ticket, also in French and not sure if they exist in English. You will find several panels inside that do have explanations in English, however. No guided tours, you are on your own, so some might be frustrated with that. There are only a few rooms to visit, but what is really spectacular is the size of the place (for back in the day in the 16th century) and all of the architectural details (Italian architects and artists), including the dovecote in the center of the inner courtyard. Photographers will be happy. The history of the man who built it, Jehan Ango, a rich ship owner from Dieppe and who was close to King François 1 is quite interesting. I’ve lived in the Paris region for 22 years and so it is such a pleasure to come to Normandy and have some of these sites practically to our selves! It is so close to Dieppe and well worth the detour! Plus Varengeville-sur-Mer is a chic and wonderful little place with several other great sites to visit.

Nice but not anything I'd go out of my way to show friends. Not terribly easy to find, and a bit underwhelming.

A great place visit and perhaps plan a destination wedding or reception
Oct 2015
As you drive up to this chateau be prepared to have your breath taken away. Even the foliage around the sweeping driveway is manicured! Then as you go through the entrance's portico and enter the courtyard, again be prepared to to have your breath taken away again. You will see the Le Combier or dovecote. In the 15th century this was an outward symbol real wealth. (obviously before people understood just how much disease the pigeons carried) For the3 engineering types, pay attention to the structure of the roof of the Le Colombia to help you understand building in the 15th century. The4 courtyard is also well maintained. Additionally pay attention to artwork depicting the chateau's changes over the centuries. The very large reception area can also be rented for destination wedding/ reception and the staff will help you understand what that would require. There are are many pieces of ancient equipment and additional drawings showing their usage. Overall this chateau was a beautiful residence of Normandy showing the influence of the original owner Jehan Ango, a very rich shipowner and sponsor of the arts. The architecture of the Italian Renaissance f the16th century at its finest.

Unexpected pleasures
Oct 2014 • Friends
We visited the Manoir d'Ango yesterday and returned again today just to feast our eyes on the Manoir when approaching from the long alley of plane trees. Engaging and knowledgeable staff at the entrance. Do parts of Sissinghurst reflect some of the feel of the Manoir's East Wing inner courtyard or is it my imagination? And the dovecote, does that not bring the Duomo in Florence to mind! All in the first few minutes without even noticing the magnificent kitchen's original sandstone floor or taking the time to figure out the perspective Pissarro's Le Verger du Manoir D'Ango, Varengeville was painted from.

Architecture! Architecture! Architecture!

The title sums up everything. You do not visit this place of the interior but the architecture! The gardens are not those of a pretty landscaped ones and there are not much stuff to see besides learning the history of the manor and admiring the olden day architecture.
