The taxi journey from Chengdu to Bamboo Forest is 4.5 hours.
We arrived after noon and travelled to various spots in a taxi. The forest is huge so it's not possible to do this on foot.
The next morning, we went to the remaining spots and left the forest just before noon.
I like the cool temperature and peaceful surroundings.

You need to hire a car and driver to get to the many places in the forest. I was able to do this for 240 yuan/$40 for a few hours one day and all day the next day. The forest has a lot of hiking trails through the bamboo forest, many of which go along a stream to waterfalls. Trails are good. There's also a trail along a cliff side with good view of the valley below and carvings in some of the cliffs. The cableway across the bamboo-covered valley is worth taking. I was told the other one isn't interesting and didn't have time to do both. There are a number of hotels, but you need a car to get to them.
