Love Rapid Bay, it’s basic toilets only and a BBQ, there’s nothing to do other than stroll
Along the beach, walk the hill, walk along the jetty. But if it’s somewhere quiet and yet busy at the same time then this is for you. Basic camping at its best, big skies and no traffic, just the squeal of other campers delighting in the lack of civilization.
We love to reconnect as a family and our souls and this place is exactly where you can. The beach is beautiful but it is fine stone sand so not your average white sand beach, great if you’ve got surf shoes. The water is crystal clear, the cave at the end is fascinating to explore.
If you want a cheap camp with a view go here.

Long narrow clean beach, a blend of stone and sand. Stunning coastline with majestic cliffs and a cave to explore.

Rapid Bay is on e of a few beautiful beaches south of Adelaide. There are some historical monuments and a long fishing Jetty. At one end of the beach is a large Cave to be explored.

Positives:-
Nice grassy area to camp and a good place to try some fishing.
The beach is within walking distance, although be prepared that the beach is very stoney in parts.
Exploring; You will have a nice long walk to the Jetty and another long walk to a cave at the far end of the Beach. (About 2 km)
There is a Council area adjacent to the camp ground with two BBQ's which are free of charge, but on the one occasion I went to use one they both were dirty so be prepared you may have to clean one if you want to use them.
Negatives:-
We camped for 7 nights and couldn't get to sleep until well after 12 midnight for 2 of the nights, due two groups of rowdy campers who had blaring music and loud voices.
There were many complaints to the caretaker and Manager but they didn't rectify the problem.
The Police were called by one annoyed camper (arrived 2 hours after the call) the rowdy group saw the lights on the Police car turned off all their camp light and radio, then and only then could we get some sleep.
There is no drinking water, so make sure you take your own, there is a tap for dishes etc.
There are no hot shower's, there is one cold shower for swimmers.
There are no toilets on the camp ground, but there is a public toilet adjacent. It has two cubicles and the urinal for the men, five cubicles for the women and one handicap toilet. The handicap toilet was used as the DUMP as the is not one on the camp site.
For a couple the fee is $18 a night ($9 per) and about $4 for children. In many parts of Australia the fee is less and you get better amenities. Making this comparison I thought it was a rip off.

Rapid Bay is very different to it’s neighbour Second Valley. We camped there this first weekend of February and it was packed. There are no powered sites, no showers and none of the facilities you would get in caravan parks. It’s like free camping but with a fee which I imagine covers the general upkeep of the area, cleaning the toilets etc.
Positives: beautiful spot, great for fishing, snorkeling, diving, no rush to pack up and be out before 10am. There is a small playground for kids and BBQs. A stunning drive in from the main road to the beach.
Negatives: extremely windy at night. (We had been warned about this by fisher friends so knew to expect) - peg down any tents / shades very securely. Wind is strong enough that it will blow your shelter away. Wind is also very noisy at night. Not much natural shade in the camping area. Few trees. Beach is not sandy it’s stones mostly. No showers except for a couple of outdoor freestanding ones within the camping area or any other facilities. Bins were overflowing and not emptied across the weekend attracting flies.
Fees were good. $54 for 2 nights for 2 adults, 2 children but this does reflect the lack of power and facilities.
No little shop at Rapid Bay which would have been useful even if just for fish bait, ice, newspaper, milk, bread that type of thing.
Choice between Second Valley and Rapid Bay for a family mini break? Second Valley for sure.
Rapid Bay is better for fishing and diving. Both beautiful though.

This is by far one of my most favorite camping grounds!
Been here plenty of times!
Has great fishing, a big cliff edge cave accessible by foot, big rocky cliff, nice beach, friendly people etc... Big camping area....bring a tent or caravan or camper. There are places to stay there like in a cabin or villa. But to get the best exp, take a tent or two with some friends and plenty of firewood. As you are allowed a controlled campfire!
Climbing cliff is permitted, at your own risk though. I did it and was very pleased with my efforts. Only to find there was a huge hike back to the bottom!
Local shops are open during the day.
Camping fees are very minimal and affordable per night.
To the left of the camping ground, there is like an abandoned quarry or salt mining factory set up which is still connected to the jetty.
Secretly me and a friend climbed into the abandonment area at night. we climbed right to the top and right at this instant, i turned around ro see a red light turn off....then all of a sudden rhis bog loud army sounding alarm went off! Scared the s*!# out of me! So i legged it down the Cliff face to the beach and ran back to the cabin in which we were staying in.
Mind you that was a good 12 years ago!
However ive been back to rapid bay numerous of times after and never attempted to go near the mine.
If you love the great outdoors and camping, rapid bay is the place to be!

This place must be doing really well because the manager (or someone who professed to be important) is the rudest person we've encountered in 10 years of travels (to identify him, he drove a blue Holden ute).
We hadn't planned to stay but have a look around for future reference. We parked outside and walked to the signage which had instructions for checking in.
We started walking across the park & this person called out. He told us it was private property &, like going to a cafe or supermarket, we had to sign in! (It is wide open space but no QR code or sign-in sheet).
He then said "you could be from anywhere & have the disease"!
He was dismissive of any questions, got in his car & drove off.
What a horrible, boorish bogan.
I doubt he'll be concerned but we won't be bac

Really picturesque place with cliffs, beach and caves and jetty to investigate.
Looks like it would be safe for young families and retired couples.
Very quiet place with camping grounds next to the beach.
Really long jetty on the southern end where lots of people were trying their luck fishing. There is also an old tumble down jetty next to the new one - great for photographs.
On the way back to the car we watched dolphins frolicking in the shallows 😊.
Well worth a visit.
