Had 20 minutes to 'kill' before going to lunch so called in to see what they had. My partner saw a plant but as there were no staff around decided to go for lunch and call back.
This we did some 2 hours later but suddenly were told the nursery is not open! I struggled to understand another word he was saying but explained that we had seen a plant and so he escorted us to find it and we went to pay. The lady then explained that only the gardens were open at £5 per person to which we declined.
We then said there were no notices saying it was closed and she said someone, a member of staff I presume, had moved it and not put it back.
We were made to feel like intruders and will certainly never be back.

This is a wonderful, family-owned combination garden and plant nursery with a range of miniature gardens. Spend the few pounds so that you can take the self-guided tours as it's absolutely worth it. I've visited it a few times and bought many plants there. It's a real family operation where the entire relatively large garden is maintained by two people and the owners pursue a "plant it and it must survive on its own" approach. It also has a comfortable and simple tea room and an internet business.

After reading all the wonderful reviews I'm sorry to say my experience was far from wonderful. All the reviews said how well the plants were packaged. My plant came in a very flimsy banged up box. It looked like someone sat on it. When I opened it the plant was damaged all the compost was emptied out of the pot so the plant must have been tossed around in transit. Not only that the invoice was torn and stained.
So this is my first purchase and looks like my last from this garden canter. I have phoned and left two messages at 15.10 it's now 7.30p.m and no one has called me back. So buyer beware all those reviews are not real.

I have to confess that I have only seen the gardens online, though I hope to rectify that as soon as covid allows.
I have bought on line quite a few plants, all fantastic quality, beatifully packed and with reasonable p&p.
I was so incensed by one or two reviews and so admiring of your considerate replies that I felt I had to put in my four penneth.

p.s. thank you for the sweeties

I didn't buy any plants but visited the garden and the plant centre.
Like many of these exquisite gardens we were not able to take the dog with us so my husband and I walked the garden separately.
The garden was absolutely gorgeous.
I highly recommend a leisurely visit.

Unfortunately as we were touring around I didn't buy any plants as I'm not sure they would have survived the trip.

Thank you for curating such a beautiful garden in Antrim.

Hi there.
Order arrived today well packaged and flowers intact. Only a couple of days after placing the order too.
Wife loved the flowers. When I order online again Ballyrobert will be my first port of call.

Thanks again

I have to disagree with the previous comments. This garden is exactly what it says on the tin and then some!! From the very personal welcome and tips how best to enjoy the visit from the son of the owner himself to the temptation of the plant sales at the end this was a well spent couple of hours.
It is a country garden not a country house, the walk may be relatively short in distance but the sheer abundance of beautifully kept plants on display can keep you occupied for as many hours as you have spare.
The self service tea shop, where payment is by honesty box, is an excellent idea. We used it for a break half way through the walk. There was an selection of scones, tray bakes and cookies from a jar. They were all home made and fresh and if you didn't like the tea or coffee you only have yourselves to blame as you brew it yourself. Total outlay for 3 people was under ten pounds, if you restricted yourself to cookies it would be under 5!!!
Yes you can go to Mountstewart, they are fabulous but it is a different experience. If you want inspiration for your own gardens you won't get better than this!

Hate to be negative regarding somewhere that is obviously a labour of love, but we were expecting a lot more.
Firstly the positives. A very wide range of plants that you don't seem to find in your average garden centre and that was very nice as my partner loves her garden but gets tired of the same old plants on offer everywhere else. Not sure how you would compare prices to the 'bigger boys' as they can obviously undercut smaller outfits such as this one. Still, I did think some of the more 'common' plants on offer (hostas being one) were a little bit more expensive here.
The negatives. Well, to pay £9 (for the 2 of us) to wander around the gardens seemed a little expensive to us and we would have preferred to spend that money on more plants so you possibly gain with one hand and lose with the other! That is, of course, your choice but I think I would prefer to be moving goods off the shelf myself.
My only other concern was the seemingly cool reception from the owners. Not saying for one minute they were rude but they were hardly the friendliest people I have ever encountered and my partner felt the same - asked for some advice regarding the plants we had purchased and what was given was vague to put it mildly.
Would return to purchase but only for the fact that they have this excellent range of 'unusual' plants.

I have become a frequent visitor to Ballyrobert and my most recent visit being 25th Aug, albeit it was a wet morning but still it didn't stop us having a wonder around, supplied with an umbrella from Joy. After a chat with Joy over a cup of coffee and scone in the tearoom we set of around the garden (under the umbrella) and as always came away totally inspired to try and create something like the beautiful flower beds that have been created at Ballyrobert. As a keen gardener I know how much work goes into maintaining such a large plot and being a family home and business, it is obvious a true labour of love also.
Yes, as other reviewers have said, if you want to spend a day going around a large country estate by all means carry on, however this is a unique garden and mingling with the people who created it and receiving good advice is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. There are seats where you can take a rest and sit and admire the colour and array of plants.
I purchased plants from them last year and they are beautiful in my garden this year, excellent quality.
This garden is certainly well worth a visit.

Arrived wanting to buy plants etc and decided to sit outside in the sun for a coffee... what an experience! We wanted a coffee and tray bake.. we where told it was self service and to put a “trust payment” in the dish. Made our on instant coffee. Served ourselves. Washed the cups, dried them and put them away. Needless to say no plants where purchased and we couldnt wait to get out of the place!
