This is an awesome village in Fujian province. It is still not easily accessible, so it retains some medieval charm. But that is changing with transportation options expanding . So, hurry before it became super-crowded. A couple of days is enough to get a full immersion.

A definite must-visit site when you come to China, these tolous or earthen houses, date back over 900 years and allow a glimpse into Hakka culture, traditions and architecture. Chuxi is one of the better preserved ones, and there are entire Hakka families still living there. You should also try some of the home-style cooking in the homes. You should be reasonably fit as there is some climbing involved. Some of the tulous have converted some rooms into motel rooms but we decided to give these a miss during the cold December days.

Wow, we visited Fujian's most beautiful Tulou in the Chuxi residential region.
It was a beautiful sight and walking towards the Tulou through a small stream, walking on pieces of brick to cross the stream was a beautiful sight.
The Tulou is unique as it was hugh cluster but has only 1 entrance door. Upon entering you can see many rooms in the hugh round building. It has 2 layers which was very special and unique.
It has many exhibition rooms which exhibit the way the Hakka live and the things they used.
We climbed up to the viewing spot right to the top and it was a very beautiful sight from the top.
We spend sometime taking picture and it turns out quite good.

The Chu Xi cluster is a bit further out than the other clusters, so it's a bit pricey to get to for solo travellers. I was lucky and found another person who wanted to go to share a ride with, so ask around if you want to go. This cluster was less busy than some of the others and the villagers here seemed less keen to make money but were happy to chat over some yummy complimentary tea. The tulou are well maintained and photogenic both inside and out. Make sure you clamber up to the viewing spot for a stunning photo op! They are set amongst rolling hills, terraces and a pretty river. I think over all this was my favourite of the four clusters I visited (the others being Hong Keng, Tian Luo Keng, and Gao Bei).

Jiqing House is more than 600 years and it took 21 years to build it. It is now vacated to make way for tourists and a museum. It is an amazing structure. Because the Hakka had migrated from elsewhere, they sometimes become the targets of attack. There is also a "escape hatch" from the building in case enemies succeeded in penetrating the building. The building is still preserved in a structurally sound condition. At the ground level, the various room house different exhibits and a Chinese-speaking guide is available. The base of the structure is like 1.6m(?) thick and thinning as it goes higher. Visits to the square tulou (earth house) should also be made.

We found the Tulou cluster of the little Chuxi village to be most interesting in the Yongding area, because it has both round and square buildings, because one of them contains an interesting small museum and because you could have a perfect view of the whole cluster, from a small platform built on a hill opposite to the village.
These buildings were built for the purpose of protecting and accommodating a large number of usually related people (up to 200-300), by the Hakka minority, who came from the North of the country. While differing in size or shape (round or square) the buildings are similarly structured. There are still people living there but most of the rooms are empty as the "Tulou way of living" seems to be on its way to extension.
The Tulou buildings are something both strange and unique and for us, very much worth a visit.

The oldest and largest building in Chuxi is a museum which is both beautiful and interesting.
You can go up the stairs and get a sense of the overall architecture of a XV th century structure.
Next to it is a large rectangular building still very much in use.
This village can be seen from above from a look out that you reach through a long flight of stairs.
To reach the village itself there is the challenge of crossing the river skipping from one slat of stone to an other.
Fortunately you can exit through a regular bridge.
Less commercial than other Hakka villages, this one was the most appealing to us.

Located 3 hrs frm Xiamen, avoid following the tour group as you will be bombarded with multiple shopping stops along the way. Try rent a car, it may cost a bit but worth the time. We were left with less than 2 hrs exploring the tulou. Bring back some super smooth chinese tea (tie guan yin). Avoid weekends at all cost! Speak to the locals and your experience will be enriched! Local guide will avoid the 3rd tulou but highly recommended, there are few local traders still operating small business in there. Speak hakka if you can and the locals will embrace you more! I did it and it felt good...
Overall, an excellent and rich cultural site worth visiting if you are in Xiamen

We have travelled to most provinces in China and always wanted to visit the Hakka houses in Tulou . So we stayed in Xiamen and travelled just for the day to the Tulou area. We hired a drive and guide which is the only way to do it and you can cover many little villages in the area in a day so not necessary to stay overnight there. I was expecting to see some houses and take some photos and get information.... but it was so much more. The countryside is beautiful. The drive is lovely and the green mountains and the fact that there are tulou houses everywhere, there are over 1,400 houses dotted throughout the mountains and villages and it is very interesting to see them integrated into the local areas. There are tourists everywhere so if you take a private car and guide it is so much better. You can stop at small places and walk around and just see the local life. The area is just as interesting and beautiful as the houses themselves. If you are wanting to see Xiamen don't leave without taking a day to this very interesting place. Our guide has a wechat RolandSu , he was very nice and had a very very safe driver.

The largest of this cluster has a fantastic exhibition of how the Hakka lived their lives, very informative and well worth the visit.
Added bonus is that there are very few tourists here as it is too far for the crowds from Xiamen on a day trip.
Maybe do this one first, it will open your eyes to what you are seeing at the other sites.

How does one arrange staying in a Chuxi Tulou, and how much does a night cost? I'm a single traveller and would love to stay for 2 nights enjoying the village atmosphere.
Many thanks for your answer

Hi guys, our family of 4 is planning a day visit to Chuxi Earthen Building Cluster sometime this week.
Would like to ask if anyone has any tour group recommendations? If it's not advisable to join your groups, is there any other way we can get there? What are the costs like?
Thanks
