Kedarkantha was my first-ever trek to the mountains! A birthday gift to myself. I had the time of my life those 6 days there. Lots of fun and memories to cherish forever. Even though the last day's climb was a little hard for me, the view we walked into was worth it all. Also, so grateful for our trek guides, Rocky Bhai and Mukesh Bhai, who were a great pillar of support for us all, regardless. Beyond Grateful!!

More often when people ask us that "what to wear while trekking in cold weather to keep us warm", we suggest them a sequence one should follow for layering but more vital thing is that they should first know what are the exact stuffs worn over different body parts to keep themselves robust even in negative climatic conditions.
Ironically, one must believe that you can enjoy the cold only if you are well covered from it.

This was my first multi-day trek with proper camping experience and I went there with an organization called Indiahikes. This happens to be one of the best experiences of my life and I am sure most people going there will have similar thoughts. We get so used to luxury in our daily lives that we often forget to appreciate the value of basic things like water, warmth, bed, food. This trek made us realize the importance of these and taught us that it is also possible to live a basic life without luxury. We climbed up some pretty steep sections and camped at sub-zero temperature......sometimes it was a real challenge, but now when I look back into this I really feel proud of myself for doing it. Earlier whenever I used to plan for a trip to a snowy destination I would always book an accommodation with heaters, spacious rooms, proper washrooms with warm water.....never could I imagine that I would stay inside sleeping bags in tents, use bio-toilets for days, eat basic vegetarian food and still be the happiest.
So enough of my emotions....now let me tell you something about the trail. Usually Kedarkantha, being one of the most popular winter treks of India, remains painfully overcrowded in winter. But most of the crowd choose Sankri side for their trek. Indiahikes took us through an alternative route which starts from Gaichwan Gaon and this route stays completely empty. We hardly met any trekkers on our way and even got the campsites entirely to ourselves. Now as far as I remember Day 1 was a pretty challenging climb to Julota campsite and tested our stamina to a large extent. Day 2 on the other hand was pretty easy and short and we stepped on our first patch of snow near our campsite at Pukhrola. Our tents here were also pitched just beside the snow which looked beautiful in the daylight but tested our endurance for cold at night. On day 3 we started at 5.30 am for our summit push through the steep snowy slopes. This climb was the most challenging for many in the team due to lack of oxygen but luckily everyone managed to reach the top by 9.30 am. The entire tiredness vanished after we saw the view from the top......layers of mountains rolled out infront of us....some were green, some white and some blue.....the majestic Swargarohini rose just infront of us giving us a feeling that we are actually standing in heaven. This day we trekked till a place called Akhoti and camped there in the middle of the forest. Day 4 was basically a descent through some beautiful trails till we reached the base camp.
Though the trek might sound pretty easy but trust me it is not. I would not recommend it to people who have endurance issue and definitely not to children. I feel a person should be involved in some sort of cardio exercise before attempting any trek (its just a personal opinion). Other than the fitness another thing that you should keep in mind is proper trek gears. You should use proper trekking shoes with ankle grip and if you are walking on snow, microspikes and gaiters (usually provided by the organizer) would act as added advantages. Also you should carry at least 4 - 5 layers of clothes, proper gloves and socks if you are trekking in winter....best to consult the numerous videos available online for this. With these things sorted you are good to go.
I did this with the help of Indiahikes and I personally loved their facilities to a great extent. They took utmost care of our safety and made us comfortable as much as they could. Also the food they provided were beyond expectation at those freezing temperatures. Though they might charge a little more than the local organizations but I felt the experience worth every penny. I highly recommend this trek with them.

The place which brings you closer to nature. After a hard climb, a beautiful sunrise does not disappoint your efforts. Most people rate it as an overcrowded trek but trust me, this is the best possible start for your Himalayan Trekking journey.

A little over crowded as this is the most popular winter trek but the views beginning from the base camp at Sankari village to the first campsite & then Kedarkantha base camp are superb, scenic & full of snow. You can also experience the thrill of night trekking as you have to start at 2-3 AM to reach the top on your final day. Thrill of walking over a sharp ridge battling with gusty winds in subzero temperatures and mesmerizing by the unforgettable sunrise at the top, This trek can offer you a lot, it's a complete package in all.

This is one of the best Treks to be done in the winters. It gives a mesmerizing view of all the peaks of gangotri and yamnotri ranges. The feeling after summit gives a sense of achievement and fills the heart with joy.
We planned it with a delhi firm that is Travellers Tribe which is aiming to boost the Local tourism by providing the same quality as the prominent Hiking companies but at a price way lower than them. They charged us Rs6500 per person for a group of 10 people from dehradun to dehradun for 5N/6D trek and the hospitality was amazing.
I would recommend you guys to approach travellers tribe rather than paying Rs10000 to prominent hiking companies.
