Having researched (clearly not well enough) and being interested. In wartime history I was looking forward to visiting a wartime secret nazi submarine base.
A very rugged drive, which I would recommend for the views and remote beaches we found, we arrived here to be greeted by a barrier across the door saying private/no entry. I could here a tour going on inside so waited as a few other tourists came and went. Eventually a young lady came and explained in very broken English that they were open but admittance was only by “donation”. I already knew this much and explained that was fine. What then became clear was that the barrier wasn’t coming down till the donation had been received. Having made the journey and looking forward to what was inside I agreed to “donate” €20 and placed it in the tin. What lay within was a courtyard with lots of doors of it, unfortunately all but two said no entry on the doors so we went into the room which access was permitted. A German tour group were just finishing but we quickly established that there was nothing to see apart from a couple of dummies with fancy dress uniforms on, some newspaper cuttings, no labels, explanations, only our imagination as to what was what and what went on here.
Very shortly after, on the way out we discovered the toilet door so took the opportunity. There was no flush and it smelt like it hadn’t been flushed since 1945.
€20 is not a lot I know but we were well and truly conned here, please don’t suffer the same fate.

Attenzione!
Warning!
The house is guarded by a character who only asks for a free offer for the visit. Too bad that, if you are not part of a group he has selected, you enter, you make an offer, but you only visit one room that collects some randomly chosen 'objects'. More flea market than artifact of the time ...!
The character in question decides, by his own will, whether to visit the rest of the house or not: bunker and tower.
Travel more than 15 km of dirt road, to feel refused the visit, because you are not part of an organized group!

A must visit while on Fuerteventura. Give the friendly caretaker Pedro a couple of euros donation each at the door, at least, as it is all he and his family subsists on..Don't expect much in the way of a museum, it is just 2 rooms that are available to see, filled with nazi war memorabilia and other junk, but go there to be steeped in history, at this mysterious nazi villa. Also a great view over the stunning deserted Cofete beach. You're not supposed to go there in a rental car really, unless you spend a lot of money on a Jeep, but everyone did. It's a rough road, but not too bad, any car can manage it in about an hour in 2nd gear.

We arrived in the evening and got kicked out after around 40 minutes which we spent with the two dogs who live there with the owner of the villa. What we experienced there was clearly animal abuse.
The older dog had a fractured face and was tied to a chain, whining and howling heartbreakingly when we arrived - but nobody cared. We asked somebody doing gardening in front of the dog's spot to take it off the leash, but the man acted as if he didn't understand and later told us it's not possible as "the dog bites" (which wasn't true, we both got to pet it). The poor dog had to urinate at the spot where it (apparently) sleeps and lives most of the time, you could see how uncomfortable it felt while doing so and everybody who knows about dogs also knows that these animals don't like being close to their own excretions at all.
Later they let it off the leash, but to me it seemed they only did it because they saw how disgusted we were with this whole situation.
Aside from this, the visit was interesting indeed, we didn't have much time to discover the whole building (from what I saw it isn't even allowed to see everything, only parts) and it really does look as if nobody really cares about preserving the villa.
The owner started a little rant about the government while walking us out and talked very aggressively and dominantly, probably not the vibe you're hoping for on vacation and in a beautiful scenery like this.
So maybe think twice about visiting Villa Winter and if you decide to do it, check up on the dogs and let the owner know what you think, maybe there's a chance of changing something for the better

The drive to the villa is scenic, and especially when you cross the peak, the view to the villa is amazing - so far away and isolated it seems. From that point you're not able to see the village of Cofete.
At the peak, it's possible to turn around and go back - and we recommend, that you do that!
If you expect to feel the history of the house, you'll be very disappointed.
First thing you see is old car tires painted in every colour of the rainbow. The next thing is a hand painted sign saying "museo", which might raise your expectations.
But then you walk or drive the last few meters to the house - and what you'll see here is piles of garbage, broken glass thrown in the surrounding nature, plastic buckets and other things, that doesn't belong.
Inside in the yard, there's put up some exhibition of tasteless things, most with absolutely no relation to the expected storytelling.
The few areas open to the public is filled with even more not related garbage, plastic, on the walls hang not so old (but broken) gear for fishing and the plastic things to put on your back, when you wanna go spray your garden with pesticides ( don't know the English term). Outside in the terrace area, there's thrown some broken Coca cola tables and other Plastic garbage.
They have tried to sporadically modernize parts with new tiles and a homemade small pool, which just even more destroys everything. It is obvious that it's not even close to be part of the history of the house.
No artefacts - no nothing. Just a tasteless interior spiced up with broken plastic and glass thrown in nature with no respect for the surrounding nature park.. And a few rusty satellite dishes placed central in the terrace area..
The men living or staying there just hang around smoking cigarettes and hunt you with a small box, where they want you to put money in..
There is absolutely nothing, that tells or respects the house and it's history. It all seem totally fake. Just some grumpy men, who wanna keep feeding the conspiracy tales to finance their need of tobacco..
That was our impression - but maybe you shouldn't turn around and go back without visiting. Maybe you actually should go there, get your own idea and help the awareness of this possible important part of history being destroyed..

Firstly my experience comes from living and working in Fue.
This is not a museum and this house is not owned by the people living there although by now they probably have squatters rights.
The house was sold many years ago to a man of wealth, however before he finally made time to visit the house the local villagers had moved in.
This will never be a museum as the family living there would have to pay taxes on what they charge people for visiting the house.
Your Donation is their living.
Many tours have stopped going here as they are unpredictable and chased people off with a shot gun before as the 'donation" wasnt deemed enough.
Cofete is a strange and beautiful place as is the island in general and is worth a visit for its end of the earth feeling and also where they filmed Exodus. This is an amazing place to hike too.
The house could be truly amazing in the right hands but personally I wouldn't visit in it's current state and it is being left to become a ruin :(

Please leave a donation for the family when you enter. Open 10-1400 and 1400-1700.
We were lucky enough to meet the owner Pedro and he gave us a guided tour of the out of bounds areas to tourists. Such a bizarre underground chamber with striking similarities to the architecture of Auschvitz. No natural daylight downstairs, tunnels and cells. Please read up on all the conspiracy theories before you go. We went in our little rental car and got there unscathed and full of adventure. This was the highlight of our trip for me. The beach came a close second

The stories about the villa and its supposed Nazi past are more gratifying than the villa itself. It's run by a family and they are hoping I hear that the Spanish government will buy it and turn it into a tourist attraction because the place is dropping apart, there is no charge but please leave a donation as they do need help. I'm quite torn, I don't want to say don't go and take cash people need, but in truth this is really not worth seeing. There are almost no exhibits and the ones that are there are general farming equipment rather than anything relevant to the villa or its real or alleged history. Look at it from the nearby beach and don't bother to go in if I'm being honest.

We have visited the villa on a couple of occasions and this time brought friends with us. I was able to contact Pedro via Facebook messenger to arrange a time and Date for him to meet us so we could go downstairs as this area is locked to visitors unless he’s there. Pedros english is limited however my friend could translate which was useful. The drive to the villa is ropey although I’m sure this year the roads were better than previous years. Whilst there the beach and the graveyard there is worth a visit and also the restaurant sells lovely tapas worth a visit too.

It i not easy to get there. For almost 20 kilometers you have to drive on an unpaved, narrow, steep road. Without barriers next to abyss. Only for experienced drivers! It is a protected area - breathtaking.
The villa itself is a big dissapointment. From a distance it looks great. Whe we arrived, two men were staying at the entrance. They said there is no entrance fee, but they accept donations. The villa looked huge. I was prepared for something good, special, valuable. Well...Indoors only two rooms are accessible. Bigger part of the villa is closed, because of the bad condition of the buiding. Some parts look like they will collapse soon. In some part of the villa the two men lives. There is an "exhibition" - with no sense at all. They put on display whatever they have found in the villa. Even some pictures of themselves. One of the men is shown with an eagle....
There is a toilet for visitors---with no possibility to wash hands. And it stinks. It is not worth to get into the villa.

Just on the off chance anyone knows - is there a way to get in touch with the people living there ?
I understand they have a pretty unpredictable visiting policy so I’d rather contact them beforehand…

Do not do this without four wheel drive! you are not insured and it will cost you a lot. A lot of people are driving to Cofete but only a few ( idiots) try to drive to the Winter Villa.
