Ancient fortress site to check out. It was very windy and very quiet when we visited. You are greeted with a stunning 360-degree panorama of the area when you reach inside the fortress. Free parking of course, and there is also a set of stairs to get you up into the rocks. Should take you no more than 3-4 minutes to get into the formation. If visiting Hvistserkur already, this is a great add-on. If any of this information is helpful, please consider a thanks :)

Worth a brief stop when passing through the region. The scenery of mountains and lakes is sensational and this offers a high point to see it. Borgarviki itself is a ring of raised stones with a rock strewn floor.

The place is a ruin of an ancient fortress that deserves a visit eventhough it is just a ruin. GPS coordinates are N65° 27.94 W20°35.94 but it is also signposted from the road (717). The road to get to is quite narrow but we managed in a motor home so a car should't be too problematic. There is parking area right next to it and no services at the site. To get to the site there is a wooden staircase so the place is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. Inside the central indent there are many boulders and stones strewn all round the place so one has to be surefooted to attempt walking inside it. It is also possible to walk all round the perimeter on top of the outside wall. There is a viewing dial at one end and a 360 degree view of the whole area can be seen. The information board at the site gives some background history to the place.

Climb up to get a great view of the area but a sunny day would be best. 4x4 recommended. Imagine what the people who built this went through to establish this fortress.

Visited on a cloudy and windy day so we didn't have great views of the area. We were the only ones there which was nice and it was a relatively easy walk up to the fortress from the carpark.
You could probably stop at Hvitserkur which should be around 20 min drive away.

This ruin/fortress is interesting and fun to explore. You can climb up to the top for an amazing view of the valley. The road to get here is one lane with many blind corners, be careful and take your time getting there! We were happy to have a 4x4 vehicle.

This isn't the most exciting place, but I'm giving it a five for all the people that are already traveling off the beaten path. There weren't many people when we went and the views were gorgeous. If have plenty of time and you're in Vatsnes, you should check it out. I wouldn't, however, make that the reason you go. My husband and I liked going off the ring road. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride getting there.

Borgarvirki is another trip up a narrow and gravel road. 4X4 is recommended. There is a small parking lot and a very easy walk up to the summit of the fortress/crater. The views are great and kids would love seeing the Viking fortress.

This volcano core rises up like fortress from the surrounding valley floor. It was also used as such with only small additional walls added during some of the icelandic feuds. But it was never an actual fort or a home stead, it was to remote and isolated.
Get up there and take in the amazing view on a sunny day.
