As my title hints at, it's worth taking the time to visit if you have a little extra time and are in the area. If you're making the trek just for the fort you'll likely be disappointed. The fort itself isn't much to look at,...More

worth a quick stop along the way. Interesting how the builders of the fort used the natural of the basalt columns to integrate into the fort. Nice view. Drive was fine with 2WD.

Once you are in the area it’s worth a quick photo. Not worth the journey by itself. Lots betters stuff to see in Iceland. Kind of boring.

I would not drive up to here to see this old fort, but as you are touring around the Vatnsnes Peninsula it is an OK spot to stop. There are no real traces of the old fort, except for the natural basalt columns and a...More

This isn't the most exciting place, but I'm giving it a five for all the people that are already traveling off the beaten path. There weren't many people when we went and the views were gorgeous. If have plenty of time and you're in Vatsnes,...More

The "structure" isn't much to look at, and no one really knows the history of it. We went here because we were told it wasn't too popular with tourists, and thought it might be a good spot for a picnic, but I guess that has...More

Climb up to get a great view of the area but a sunny day would be best. 4x4 recommended. Imagine what the people who built this went through to establish this fortress.

Visited on a cloudy and windy day so we didn't have great views of the area. We were the only ones there which was nice and it was a relatively easy walk up to the fortress from the carpark. You could probably stop at Hvitserkur...More

Borgarvirki is another trip up a narrow and gravel road. 4X4 is recommended. There is a small parking lot and a very easy walk up to the summit of the fortress/crater. The views are great and kids would love seeing the Viking fortress.
