There is one tip and one tip only, get your timing right if you want to see the flowers in bloom.
Disappointingly, we didn’t get it right and the wild flowers were not in bloom yet.
In photographs we’d seen before going, it looked stunning. The Castelluccio mountain-top plains are transformed into Monet-like fields of colour. However May is probably not the best time to go and, in hindsight, we should have found a way to check beforehand.
Disappointing as it was, the scenery was still stunning. It is a very beautiful part of the world, set within the Monti Sibillini National Park.

A wild garden with flowers growing spontenous and so numerous. The colours are amazing! The trick is to go there at the right time and yesterday was the right day. I would have stared at them for hours. It's like being scubadiving in the coral reef. You'd lose the notion of time and place if you could go there without all those cars and people with their smart phones and camera taking pictures like mad! I highly recommed going there at least once in a lifetime.

I was truly blown away by the beauty of this place. We came at the beginning of July, on Saturday, and it was extremely busy, but the magnificent nature with all the mountains and fields, just took my breath away! I couldn’t stop admiring it and taking photos. The lentil fields transform incredibly somewhere between May and July, when they beautifully bloom, creating a fantastic color mosaic. I know that this year a lot of people were, apparently, complaining about not so many flowers, but I really enjoyed the site. There is also the Italian-boot-shaped grove on one of the hills (made out of planted trees) and it’s very picturesque! So don’t miss it! Also, arrive in time to have lunch surrounded by all this spectacle of nature and then don’t forget to stop by in Norcia, which is only 28 km away! P.S. Wear comfortable walking shoes to get around.

That a place like this exists, and is not well-known, is incredible. Try to go for the Fioritura, in late Spring, early Summer. Google for pictures that look too fantastic to be real… but they are real.

We visited three times, and had three different experiences. The first time, late May, we did a 4 hour hike around the large flat valley floor. It was a sensational experience, walking through acres and acres of wildflowers, buttercups, daisies, wild pansies, miniature daffodil and tulips and heaps of other varieties. All against a backdrop of snow capped mountains, and the hilltop town of Castelluccio. Peaceful with only a handful of other folks in town and no one on the Piano.
The second visit, mid June, a picnic by the stables. The wildflowers still blooming but less yellows. We drove South out of the valley, which gave great panoramas.
A completely different experience during the lentil flowering season (mid July). Despite visiting after the lentil festival, it was still incredibly busy with cars pulled over willy-nilly for folks to take pictures. The fields themselves stunning shades of purples and also red from the poppies. A photographer's dream.

Traveling here with a local, I was blown away by the privilege of experiencing this hidden gem. We drove from the coast of le Marche up through the mountains and into grand piano. So many wonderful memories, including the forest in the shape of Italy, herds of sheep and excellent local foods. What a delight to watch groups of people on motor bikes come in, rest, eat, relax and move along. The simple landscape is beautiful and unlike anything I've ever seen. It's easy to forget the altitude of this rich flat landscape while you are there. We stayed for a lingering meal of fresh local meats and cheese in the sun. I will always remember this part of our vacation. Please experience this place.

The plains are full of thistles. Also, don't forget to check out Piano Piccoló, it is a bit hidden. You can reach it from the mountain pass Norcia-Castellucio, arriving from Norcia, right when you reach the pass and glimpse the plains, you reach a crossroads, it is hard to miss, people are selling pasta, cheese, truffles and lentilles there, on the crossroads you don't continue straight into Castellucio, but turn right to a forrest. After cca 2km, the road ends with a huge camper parking area, leave your car there and follow a dirt road cca 500m up a slight hill. You will be greeted with a beautiful view of Pian Piccoló and Piano Grande with Castellucio.

The pictures of this place don't do it justice. This whole area of meadows---with their palette of wildflowers---will take your breath away. But husbands/boyfriends be forewarned: your wife/girlfriend will not let you leave until they take hundreds of pictures...

We took an old man making hiking to Castelluccio, where he still worked as a shepherd. When we arrived, just a kilometer before the top, he asked us to stop in no where. We didn't believe it, it was looking as in Tibet, where we have been last year. No one, only sheep and some herds and a marvelleous view over Mount Vettore (2.476 mt), plenty space, magnificent isolated, it was a dream.
