Great cliff views - spoilt by toilet paper everywhere
Great to experience these cliffs by walking along the top. Unfortunately as there are hardly any public toilets along the route the cliff top is like one big public toilet and is littered with toilet paper. It’s such a shame to see a pristine environment - which we are there to see - so full of rubbish, much of which is likely to blow into the sea. It would be great to see the local government address this issue.

    The highlight of our trip
We chose to come to the Algarve in Nov because we’d heard about these coastal trails. We did the Headlands trail which is further down the coast and this one, both quite challenging walks, lots of undulations but the views definitely make up for it. We took a picnic for the turnaround point, stopped for ice cream at Benagil beach plus drinks at the end, back at Praia da Marinha. We didn’t notice any rubbish which others have mentioned and it was nice & quiet for us to enjoy the views and sunset at the end of the day pretty much on our own.

    Well worth it
A sunny February day was great walking weather - at 1pm the parking was full at Praia de Marinha and I grabbed the last available spot. I walked from Praia de Marinha to the lookout over Benagil beach just after Benagil cave and back. Took 1h 15 mins, though I took a lot of photos and also spent about 20 minutes at Praia de Marinha itself. The best scenery was actually within 5 minutes or so of Praia de Marinha, but I found it worth continuing to peek down into Benagil cave - you can get a view of the beach in the cave and the tides coming in. Probably the best sea stack scenery I saw in the Algarve.

Lovely scenery and a great walk
Excellent trail, well signposted and amazing views. I would suggest getting to the car park before 9:30 even off season as it gets very crowded. We walked fast but due to the terrain and traffic on the walk it took about 2 hours each way. Both the start and end of the walk have places to eat but make sure you take water. A must do in Albufeira

Enjoy the beautiful coastline of the Algarve up close on this magnificent rocky walk
Enjoy amazing views and the beauty of the Algarve coast along this 6km walk. But don't be mistaken: it will take some time because the walk is continuously on rocky surface. Some places the path is steep and rough. So put on sturdy footwear. Also be sure to bring water and protection from the sun! The path is not a loop. You can start at either side. We started at Praia da Marinha and put the car there. So bear in mind that if you want to return you have to walk the 6km walk back or find some other way. The path is marked, but not extremely well, it is advised to check AllTrails app or similar from time to time to continue on the correct path.

Cliff hike amazing and views are spectacular
If you only pick one thing to do while in the Algarve, pick this trail an go for a hike along the cliffs. Wow is the first word that comes to mind. We broke trail into a few sections and hiked a few km each day. Whatever distance you hike out, you will need to hike back to where started/ left your vehicle. Or hike entire trail and Uber back to start point. There are places to sit along the way, so we packed a lunch a couple times. Views are spectacular, hiking wpeady to moderate, saw quite a few seniors on trail with tour group.

This is a fabulous walking trail but be advised that it is a trail, not a path. In some places it's easy to lose the trail as it's not always clearly marked. It's very steep in places with little or no handholds so is not suitable for children or the elderly. You do need to be reasonably fit and to be wearing decent shoes. This is not flip flop country. But the views are fabulous. I could have walked it in a fraction of the time if I hadn't kept stopping to stare in wonder and take photos.

This spectacular route along the central Algarve clifftops runs from the beach at Vale Centianes in the west to the beach at Marinha in the East, passing the Alfazinha lighthouse, Carvalho beach and Benagil beach as well as numerous other coves. It can be walked in either direction using the red & yellow markings painted on rocks or on posts.Good footwear is essential and it is a bit precipitous & steep in places, though the most exposed parts are fenced for safety, (however it is not recommended for small children). The route is enhanced by frequent information boards in both Portuguese and English about the geology, flora and fauna. The stated distance is 5.7 km (or 11.4 km if you walk from one end to the other and back). A return trip will take about 6 hours plus stops, but with several access points you can just do a short section if you wish. Check the tide before going - the sandy beaches, scenicaly backed by rugged golden limestone cliffs, are much better at low tide. Take a camera - and you will find many photo stops! Read the information & map on the pdf file of two of the information boards at link: http://www.arhalgarve.pt/site/parameters/arhalgarve/files/File/upload/DRL/7_Vales_Suspensos/Paineis_A0_Carvalho+Benagil.pdf

We used the excellent ‘Walking Trails in the Algarve’ free pdf guide (just put it into Google) to provide both the details on the route and a very handy OS-style map. Following local advice we parked our hire car and started off from Praia da Marinha, which has a fantastic cliff-cupped beach of its own to visit if you have the time.

Our hike was the Easter Saturday and the weather was more or less perfect for it, about 20 degrees, dry and plenty of hazy sunshine. Starting out in shorts, T-shirt and a polo shirt, the latter had been stowed into the rucksack by the end so don't wear too much, it's quite a stiff and sometimes tricky clamber around in a few places if you do a bit of exploring off the main path. Definitely wear a good pair of trainers if doing the whole thing as we did and bring the usual essentials.

I think you'll be brave to try anything more than an hour's worth in the summer months unless competing in an iron man competition. That said, we're both in our fifties and even though the missus suffers from pain in her knees, she made it round ok. We didn't necessarily set off planning to do the entire 6-7km but the unfolding beautifully stunning coastline kept us going until the end; even our teenage son thoroughly enjoyed it. There's a nice beach place at Vale Centeanes at the end and they helpfully phoned a local taxi company to take us back to the car (12e for the three of us).

For those only wanting a shorter walk I would again suggest starting off from Praia da Marinha and then jumping off at Benagil just after the famous sink hole. There are a couple of bars there to take you back unless you fancied doing the same route in reverse. To be honest, the scenary in the final hour or so was not quite to the same level as the coast before it. Allow 3.5 hours if not in a rush along with taking pictures and diving into the odd section off the main path.
