About half an hour north of Brno near Blansko is this extensive cave system. The best way to enjoy Macocha Abyss is from the Punkva Caves tour.
Tickets are purchased from the information centre next to the car park. You access the cave either by foot or road train which can be a rough and bumpy ride. It is about 2 kilometres from the car park to the caves.
Tours are very popular and operate regularly so be sure to match up your ticket time with the tour. The tour features numerous outstanding rock features although our guide had some trouble at the beginning keeping the lights on. When you are underground with a bunch of screaming school kids it is interesting.
The Front Dome contained the stunning Mirror Lake which perfectly reflected the cave. The Reichenbach Dome contained flood markers showing where the water level had risen to during major floods. The Back Dome featured a number of unique formations including the Eternal Lovers.
After this you arrive at the bottom of the abyss which offers a Jurassic view up to the sky. The tour finishes off with a meandering boat tour and one final chamber. Be warned that the boat travels very close to the rock walls so watch your head as any guidance is only in Czech.
From here we took a cable car up to the top of the abyss. Alas it was an area overrun by cheap tourist stores and the view from the top was limited. The only other way to get a view back down to the caves was by a winding and steep path.
Overall an interesting cave visit although for foreign visitors you get an English pamphlet which is great to read in a cave....

Take a tour (partly by foot, partly by boat) through the Punkva caves, which also leads into the Macocha abyss, and you will not be disappointed. Afterwards, you can go up the mountain by funicular and look down into the abyss from above. Especially when there is another tour group standing down below, at the size of ants, you will experience the astonishing depth of the abyss. The tours through the caves are very popular, so be sure to book in advance, tickets sell out very quickly.

Best advice I can give you is book in advance, the Information office in Brno were extremely helpful and set everything up for us. We took the train to Blansko 130 CK for two which takes 30 mins. We had a taxi meet us to take us up to the attraction, about a ten minute drive 180 CK each way.
Please dress accordingly as it is only 6 degrees in the caves. We took the train up from the car park as it was raining but the walk through the forest would certainly be worth the effort.
The tour takes approx an hour and a half including the cable car up to the top to look into the Abyss. The tour is in Czech but the leaflet they give you at the beggining explains everything.
We caught the 9.01 train from Brno and we're back in Brno by 1.15 in time for lunch.

It's amazing! The Moravian Karst as a whole is the best thing the Czech Republic has to offer (yes, better than the beer) and the Macocha Abyss (seen from above but also from below, from underground river in Punkva cave) is a totally natural wonder.

We saw the abyss during our tour in Punkva cave. Don't get me wrong, the cave looks great... if you can understand the explanation.
We are a family of four and we weren't entirely sure about going in but since they offered us a tour in English (it even said on the ticket), we went for it. When the tour started, the lady spoke Czech and we were waiting for English translation. There wasn't any. We approached the guide and she said that the boss said the group is too small so she can guide in Czech only.
Naturally, we returned to the cashier then. First one, the one in front of the cave, appointed us to the where we bought the tickets. The latter said that there needed to be 15 English speaking people in a group to have the guidance in English as well. When we asked her why she hadn't pointed that out when we were buying tickets for our English tour she said that it didn't matter since we were the only ones with this requirement so it wouldn't change anything (like waiting for other English speaking people and joining their tour). When we pointed out, that we wouldn't have bought the tickets knowing we won't be able to understand anything, she just said "it's too late now, isn't it?".
We were shocked by this this is incredibly rude attitude. Additionally, withholding information is just unprofessional.

Our GPS took us to the top of the abyss, so we took the cable car down. Contrary to other reports, we did not book in advance, and although we were visiting in the summer we had no problem getting tickets and joining the 70 minute tour, with only about 10 minutes waiting time. The commentary was in Czech, but that didn’t really bother us too much.
I realized later that we could have saved the 8 euro cable fare by driving to the cave entrance. The caves themselves are quite spectacular and well worth the experience. A boat ride through the lower caves is included in the tour. Take warm clothes as it is really cold in there.

I had been to Punkevni many years ago when I taught in a village near Brno. It was less touristy in those days, but saying that, the improvements they have made make the experience of the Punkevni cave much better.
As we hadn't thought we'd need to book in advance, our Czech host called ahead and a few strings were pulled and we were given a VIP ticket each. The "new" cable car from the upper car park to the entrance level was really good even if we had to pay for it! ;)
Once in the caves, whether on foot or in the boats is a fantastic experience. It is hard to believe that they were only discovered in 1909. I have been to a few show caves over the years and I was glad I was able to take my wife here.
The next time we visit, we must be more organised and maybe try to visit one of the other caves in the Macocha.

The main close up view is directly from the Punkva caves on the bottom, and I think you need reservations for that, not from the viewing platforms. The top and middle views are easily reachable with steps.

A great spot for having a look around and down the Punkva caves. Could be combined with visiting the Punkva cave and a small tavern Chata Macocha. You can go up there by funicular or to have a nice stroll enjoing the nature around.

Short train journey from Brno followed by bus or taxi. The caves and the abyss are fantastic to see. The guided commentary was not in English. Probably a good idea to make a reservation before hand - this can be done by email.

Hi,
We are planning an individual tour to Morawski Kras, but are not sure how to organize it. Could you please advise how it works with Macocha Propast and Punkva river cave cruise? Are they both combined or you need to buy separte tickets? How does it work logistically? You get to Macocha by cable car then go back and take a cruise as a seprate attraction or you take a cruise that leads you to Macocha?
Would appreciae your advice.
Many thanks!

Hello,
Macocha and Punkva Caves are one attraction. You have to call ahead and reserve tickets for the caves. They will not sell you the tickets but will hold them for you. Call and reserve them! When you get to Macocha park your car there and go to the kiosk to purchase your macocha + punkva caves+ cable ride up tickets. We walked from the top of Macocha down a winding trail to the bottom of the hill. There we left our baby carrier there and went to Punkva caves. Punkva caves includes walking thru the natural caves inside the hill as well as visit @ the bottom of Macocha abyss before you board the Punkva caves boats. Boats will take you around and drop you off back at the same spot they picked you up. From there it's a short walk to cable ride. There board the cable train and ride it to the top of the hill where your car is parked.
* take a hoodie for the punkva cave ride
Hope this helps, and hope you have a great trip! Let us know how it went.

Is this tour toddler-friendly? We will be traveling with a 19-month-old in early September and would like to tour the cave by boat.
Written July 8, 2016
If you can carry the 19 month old, I think it would be fine.

could you please advise me the Macocha Abyss teleferic ticket rate? how much?
Written April 22, 2016
It's literally nothing for what you see - 180 CZK, which is something like £5.50 per person. You probably have to buy tickets at the beginning of this journey below the Punkevni Jeskyne, from where you can take a shuttle-train :)

Hi! The main train station Brno - train - Blansko (there is train and bus main station together at one place) - bus to the Skalni mlyn and then walk (nice route for pedestrians, cca 1-2 kilometers) to the Punkva Caves and there you can walk or catch the cabin lift to the up of rock and there is Macocha Abyss
