My fiance and I who are novice divers scheduled a live aboard through Merlin Divers in Kamala Beach. They were excellent but I'll digress. We were picked up by a bus on time at our air bnb. Shuttled to the speed boat and once on the big boat had a snack and were briefed for our first dive. Big's was the name of the Dive master and he was very professional and focused on safety and fun.
This was our first liveaboard experience and we were the most novice divers on the boat by a margin. The sites were beautiful. People were saying that visibility was worse than past years but hey, mother nature always wins the day. And even if visibility was not the best we still had the 100% aquarium experience seeing octopus and cuddle fish as well as all the beautiful reef fish and turtles.
We had a great time on this trip and the crew was amazing. Food was great, they even traded a fishing vessel a case of cola for some fresh caught squid that we ate that night and it was soooooooo good.
There was one dive site with a strong current that was pretty difficult to access but all groups were gathered and accounted for . It was a bit exciting for us as we are pretty new to the sport but again, mother nature rules the day.
All in all our experiece was top notch and for a "budget liveaboard" we felt pampered and were very happy with our trip.
I would book with them again 100%.

Initially we booked 3 nights, but we decided to extend our stay. Excellent conditions on the boat, good food, friendly and helpful staff. I fully recommend them as the best diving company from Phuket.
All the complaints I have read below are overreacting. Our experience was great!
Arju was our dive master on Boat 3. She is absolutely amazing.
On the day trips we had Big (Smith) as instructor for one of our friends. He has a lot of patience, is dedicated to his job and friendly.
Definitely we will return to dive with South Siam Divers.

SSD run many trips on a fleet of boats, so this is about a 5 night stay on SS4, a budget liveaboard, to the Similans and Richelieu Rock. There's a lot of logistics involved in getting you there (and many others) from Phuket, which was well organized. You will need to be in Phuket at least the night before due to the early pick up. If staying near the airport, pick up is around 7am in a minibus. Its just over an hour to the jetty, where you pay any balance and are assigned to a speedboat. Payment by CC will incur 3% surcharge. The speedboat can be quite crowded - it just depends on no. people arriving on any given day. Journey out to SS4 takes about 1h15m. We had it almost flat calm but in rougher conditions, it could have been uncomfortable and wet. Make sure your valuables/cameras etc are in a waterproof bag.
The boat was fine. It is quite large with a good sized open air mess area where meals are taken. Food was simple but good and plentiful. The boat is kept as clean as can be with up to 40 odd crew and divers onboard. The twin cabin was an ok size, but has no storage except a space for an upended suitcase at the foot of the bed The mattress could have been thicker and was not great. One light blanket is provided. 6 shower/toilet rooms serve the ship and they coped ok, with slight waits at peak usage times. The cooks, boatboys and DM's are a friendly bunch.
I thought the dive sites were mostly good but not stunning. There are some good sites with massive boulders and swimthroughs. Some areas the coral is dead - tsunami or bombing - I can't tell. Richelieu Rock was a fine dive but not up there in the Sipadan class. It didnt quite live up to its reputation for me. It does have impressive soft corals and plentiful fish species, incl seahorses and pipefish. Enroute to Richelieu, you stop at Koh Bon, which is reputed to be frequented by mantas. At the end of our dive, my dream came true as out of the gloom, at 9m deep, came a manta and she circled us 2 or 3 times before swimming off. We were all low on air after watching her as long as we could. Probably a once in a lifetime experience.
The DM's vary in quality - I dived with 3. Most dives were with with an older DM named Moot, and group size of 4, all good on air. He was very good and found many unusual species in nooks and crannies. Other groups were larger and of mixed ability so I heard some grumbling about short unsatisfactory dives. The DM's need to quickly assess all the divers coming and going and change group make up as required to get the best fit. This didnt always happen. The briefings were reasonably informative, but then its rush rush to go down , get kitted up and into the water. This could have been better organzied and done in a bit more planned manner. As many as can fit are crammed onto the jumping off board and up to 28 divers hit the water very quickly. DM's then tell you to submerge instantly so there is no time to get your bearings - its fast and furious. Too much for my liking. You had to be quick in and eagle eyed to spot your DM before he was under. Also, no buddys were assigned. So unless you are a pair/group, or force yourself on someone, you are buddy checking yourself. This is not ideal. A diver was onboard who I knew from Mabul, where he did his DM course. After 6 dives, he fell out big style with his DM over what he thought were unsafe practices and poor dives. The DM had gone into deco on several dives, and thought nothing of this. It almost turned ugly, but was defused by the DM being moved to the sister ship, SS3. You need to be able to trust your DM, and reasonably able to request a change of DM or move to another group if you are uncomfortable.
I'd read about strong currents. We experienced generally light currents and occasionally strong ones. We were told that it was a black moon so they were not strong, but could be much stronger in a full moon. In conclusion, I'd recommend you include a trip to Richelieu Rock in your intinerary, as the Similans themselves are good dives but not exceptional. The water and islands you stop at are pleasantly free of trash, unlike Mabul and other east coast of Malaysia islands. 3n4d should do it, unless you want to repeat the same circuit and dive sites. This boat is a budget boat but its nice. The air is clean and the sky is clear, and stargazing is a great way to end any diving day.

Booked af LOB for 3D/2N. We booked through sunrise divers in Karon, and were surprised, that We were diving with this Company.
We were picked up on time, but with little to no information rushed to a speedboat, which took us to South Siam 4.
Once We arrived, We were thrown straight in to our gear and thrown in the water. No one checked cerificates or did buddy checks. We felt that everything was rushed, and it didnt feel well organized and Secure.
It was lucky that, there were very limited bookings. Otherwise the boat would’ve been overcrowded. Dive briefings were short, slow paced and rarely accurate.
Our guide was a really Nice guy, but safety was not a top priority.
All in all - very Nice dive sites, but i will never use this Company or the agent again.

Would not recommend. No certifications were checked and they were taking open water divers down to 25+ meters. We were yelled at for bringing up fishing nets that were destroying the reef and yet boat boys were throwing their cigarette butts off the boat into the water. Our dive guide also didn’t speak much English and barely communicated with us during our stay as well as a single dive briefing that’s done to the entire boat in one go regardless of certification levels by someone who isn’t even getting into the water. The company is also very happy handing out dozens of single use plastic bags for customers to keep their shoes in rather than having a box to keep them in. If you care about the ocean and what ends up in it, avoid these guys.

It made me put one star to write this review. If I could put negative stars I would. We were lost at sea for two hours. It took the boat an hour to know we were missing and another hour to find us since the current drifted us further than they expected. If it was not for the excellent Thai boat boys we would be dead in the sea. Out of the 5-7 other dive instructors only one was on the deck to aid in our rescue. The trip leader Greg was no where to be found when we were being pulled from the boat. When we got our gear off and upstairs he had jokes asking for our passport since we floated to the near country Burma. We did not find this humorous after nearly losing our life. The leader/dive master Greg never once asked if we were okay or how we are. He also never apologized for the incident. Instead he and the company blames our dive experience for the boat not picking us up. Yet we dove the site just fine. Our dive experience has nothing to do with their negligence. Our instructor told us we were solid divers. We had a day and a half left of the live aboard and did not step a foot back into the water as we did not feel comfortable or safe with this crew. If you care about your safety avoid this boat like the plague. Additionally we were promised a dive course on the boat that we paid for. When we asked about it they said we had to pay more. They refuse to refund us for the course and for putting our lives in danger. There are many other dive centers in the area. Do no put your life in danger by diving with this company! We are blessed and thankful be alive after this experience. We fear that this could happen again and someone will not be so lucky. Many other divers aboard told us they planned on reporting this company to padi before hearing what happened to us. South Siam does not care about you or your safety. They are negligent and put their divers at risk. All they care about is money.

i booked a over night trip with this company to similan island. i am a dive instructor and my son is a advanced diver. when we got to the boat the crew was so rude and so uninterested in any of the quests or diver on the boat. the boat leader greg was completely uninterested in any one other then geting them into the water as quickly as possible. there was so many people on the boat that the diver were being pushed into the water. after the dive there were so any divers trying to get out of the water that we had to wait over 30 mins just to be picked up. if a diver was in trouble then it would have been a problem. i am an instructor for 26 years. please fellow divers please do not use this dive operation, because when there is an accident it could be you.it is just waiting to happen.

I had a 3 nights and 4 days liveaboard diving trip on South Siam 3 from 17th to 21th of Feburary and I had a very disappointing experience with them. It was my third liveaboard trip in Similan. My first time was on Peterpan and the second time was on South Siam 4 and both were very enjoyable, so I decided to try South Siam 3 and I had such an awful experience which made me never want to be on the same boat again. I would like to share my experience so that other divers would make a better plan.
Firstly, South Siam boats have a very complicated diving system as they have one day and two days trip on the same boat and people keep coming in and out. It was okay for me as I experienced it on South Siam 4 last year and I knew how it goes but if you are planning to have a liveaboard trip for longer than 2 nights, you should look for other companies as the boats will be packed with people and you will feel so much inconvenience on almost everything. (Example, not enough tables for lunch, not comfortable to set your diving gears, rooms not ready until 4 pm and so on) Also, because of this system, we had to dive on the same sites on the first and the last day and the sites were not that special.
Secondly, they have no consistency. On arrival, they gave us some instructions about what we should and should not do on the boat. They asked us not to wear wetsuit on the upperdeck and the customers followed what they said but the staff kept coming up with their wetsuits on and it felt kind of unfair. They also asked us not to bully any marine creatures and be well mannered for other divers and take turns to observe marine life and to take pictures, but I saw one of their diving guides having no manner to other diving groups and teasing a sea turtle by shooting bubble rings to it. A bubble ring won’t put a sea turtle in a danger, but what the dive guide showed us is nothing like a responsible diver and his divers won’t learn any good things from him.
Lastly but the most importantly, the boat manager called “Greg” was surprisingly unfriendly, rude and arrogant to his customers. He never smiled, but always showed long face to his customers. He never asked, but always ordered. He never said ‘please’ but always gave orders with one word like ‘upstairs’ or only with the hand gestures. He kept sighing during his boat and dive site briefings. He never created a cheerful atmosphere but always put his customers under pressure. One day, a new diver arrived and he dropped his diving license, then the boat manager Greg called out his name and when the customer tried to get the license back from Greg with his two hands, Greg just throw the license to the table that the customer was sitting. I could see the customer felt very embarrassed.
I strongly believe he is not only a diving instructor but also a service provider and all the divers there had paid to have an enjoyable holiday. As a customer, I don’t expect extra cares or kindness, but I believe we deserve at least common international manners from those people working on the boat. If anyone is planning an enjoyable liveaboard diving trip, South Siam 3 is definitely not a boat that you are looking for. If you have a very limited time and can’t find other options, go for South Siam 4, certainly not 3.

I am sure, the guyes planned the day not like this. We didn't dive with them, our dive center just used their boat. By King Cruiser we had really strong current and the boat dropped us off just 200-300 meters behind the line, which we should have used to go down. It meant, 200-300 meters swimming against strong currents. Normally you should have dropped out to swim with the currents. Swimming against the currents was imposible, so they sent a rubberboat on which we could hang. After arriving to the line, and lost a lot of oxygen, we tried to go down. They didn't check, how many people were in the water, however theirs was not the only boat there. On the line there were so many panicing people, we saw only bubbles and felt, how they were hangig, pushing and pulling on us. We could not go down, because these others pulled us onto the surface, they pulled our regulator out of the mouth, hitting kicking us, where they reached us. After 10 minuets and a loss of a lots of air we decided to go back to the boat. But nobody wanted to pick us up. We were crying for help, signaling need with our hands, but the rubber boat just passed by, didn't take us. After swimming in the currents at least 20 minutes, we arrived the boat and complained. To our surprise, there were many others, who came back. A guy was kicked on his cheek and he didn't feel it any more. An other girl they let go with an empty bottle (she had a compuer, and it didn't show). Everybody was complaining, and the guy could only say, it is our fault, there are some people, who did it, so it was not impossible. Maybe, but it wss also no fun, actually, we were happy that we survived. They didn't want to understand and improve. I had some dives in my life all around the world, but never seen such. We had dived already by strong currents, but in that case someone just jumped out of the boat with snorkel to check the sea conditions exactly. The other two guys from the group, who jumped out as first, arrived the starting point on 30 meters also only with 120 bar. So bad service, life threatening, and a money driven company. Fortunately, we didn't have to go with them again.

Signed up for a day trip for my son and I on the liveaboard at the Similan Islands. Our divemaster Jim (he spoke french) was very impatient and when i did not descend as quickly as he thought I should he added weight and I dropped like a rock. My son has ear issues and he pulled him down and his ear drum perforated on the descent. I was not aware of this or we would have surfaced!
I was supposed to buddy up with Jim on the second dive as my son could not dive again and dear old Jim left me and the other two divers.... just kept swimming quickly till we could only see bubbles at the surface in the distance. We three divers stayed together and waited for him to return to us. Worst dive company ever.... worst dive master ever.... crowded.... not safe.....in a hurry..... wouldn't go again with them even if it was FREE!

I have been on many liveaboard boats before, and I had the WORST experience on the South Siam liveaboard boat. The boat crews were ignorant, rude and unfriendly. They did not care about safety of the divers by mishandling equipments, and they were mishandling the divers’ items as well. On March 1st, a team of 30 Koreans, including myself, boarded the South Siam boat. The boat manager and staff were SO rude and unfriendly. The staff were swearing in Thai all the time (I speak fluent Thai but the staff did not know that I can understand them because I did not speak a work in Thai on the boat), mishandling the equipments, and never helping with tidying up. For example, the dust caps were left uncapped all the time. The manager on the board was impatient and inadequate for guiding a group of divers; he did not announce for briefings, spoke to himself and was not responsible for what he said.
On the last day, he told us to place our belongings at one place, and one of the bags went missing. In addition, my regulator somehow got lost on the boat. I accidentally left my regulator when I left the boat, so I called and asked whether they have my regulator or not. All they said was “No.” It was only few hours after I disembarked the boat. I don’t understand why they couldn’t find it. I also checked with the other divers who were on the same boat, just to make sure that it didn’t accidentally get into others’ bags. It was my fault to leave it on the boat, but I am 100% sure that I had it above the oxygen tank, so I don’t understand why it is not on the boat. The missing baggage and the regulator are still not found yet, and the staff are negligent and unfriendly, not thoroughly looking for missing items from their boat.
I really cannot understand how one of the divers’ baggage and my regulator went missing on the boat. If the boat crews don’t find the missing baggage and the regulator, I am going to report this incident to the Tourism Authority of Thailand and also spread these issues to others who might be looking for liveaboards on the internet.
