We visited visited beautiful small village Rakcham on 4th April 2021.This year no of tourists are very less therefore we had enjoyed great Himalayan peace.
Behind this successful roadtrip I want to mention the contribution of Mr Sonu (Cont no 9816378229/9817356899) who provided us car for the entire trip in Kinnaur and drove along with us.
Although we had stayed at Batseri but we spent plenty of time at Rakcham under clear blue sky and sun.

Rakcham is a very small remote village in district Sangla in Himachal Pradesh State of North India. It is located between Sangla town and village Chitkul of Sangla valley,in Himachal Pradesh It is located at 3000 Mtr altitude,at the bank of hilly river Bapsa. The region is known as " Kinnaur " and the inhabitants of the region are called " Kinnuri ". They have their own local dialect ,dressing pattern , culture and life style. The entire Kinnaur region comes under Tribal Zone and due to which they enjoy special treatment/priviledges from the Himachal Prasesh State government for the upliftment of their living standard.
The occupation of Kinnuris are animal husbandry , farming, owning apple orchards , cottage Industry for woolen garments, using pure locally made woolen threads, Of course the present generation is slowly getting exposed to the developed world .
Overall ,Sangla Valley is most beautiful with virgin natural beauty, landscapes , rivers ,Snow covered mountains, waterfalls, forests. Among outstanding town/villages are " Rakcham".
" Chitkul ". " Sangla " , " Kalpa " , " Reckon peo ", " Kaza " & " Sarahan". Sarahan is known as Gareway to Kinnaur..
I had keen desire to visit Kinnaur region where not many tourist prefer to go probably due to its remote location. I wanted to go when you can enjoy snow all round, I decided to go here in March with everthing pre-planned. My first sight of village " Rakcham" was a pleasant surprise. I could not believe my eyes that I am at such a marvellous location of nature. It is natural beauty at its peak, wherever you cast your vision. Snow covered Mountains all round , lush green teak wood forest with snow still on tree branches , fresh atmosphere with deep blue skies and in the middle the frozen river Bapsa. Absolute tranquility everywhere. The only sound I could hear was chirping of birds. To be honest , to me all this scenario was as if I am looking at a genious man made painting on an exceptionally large canvas. But it was a great pleasure for me that it was "The God's Creation", a reality in front of me. I patted my back to have planned such unknown place in my travel itinerary but at the same time it was a feeling of disgust for me that I am a stranger for such beautyful location in my own country, particularly when I have visited many lovely places in many foreign lands.
In my opinion mid-march is the best time to visit " Rakcham" , to enjoy scenic beauty of the place with hotel accomodation pre-booked. Hiring a car or bigger vehicle with a good local driver, is important.
Just for people interested , average anual snowfall here is 1130mm
Temp.:-10 to 15 degree celcius
During summer time now one can enjoy Nature Igloo Camps near Sangla.
There are many Buddhist Monasteries , ancient Temples and old forts at Sangla, near Rakcham.
I would like to suppliment the description with my photographs of " Rakcham" , the hidden paradise.

Rakcham (3050m) a small village situated between Sangla (14km) and Chitkul (10km) on banks of river Baspa. Good to walk in green forest having orchards of apricots, peaches, chilgozas and apples. Stay here for some time when going to Chitkul. We stayed at Sangla, but one can stay here also. While staying in hotels or camps, you will have simple food with rice, dal, vegetables & rotis. No cheese/Paneer dishes.

Entourage to Chitkul from a Sangla, lies this little beautiful village near the river. The picturesque valley with the blue sky and green and ice capped mountains, it was just picture perfect for us to enjoy the drive and our midway tea breaks to Chitkul. Some parts of the roads were a bit scary but all were forgotten with the beauty of the Himalayas!

Apples come from Himachal & Kashmir. The apples of Himachal are from mid region like Shimla, Kot-khai or Thanedhar & hills before Narkanda. These have mixed tastes; some are sweet, some light sweet (RED is called Delicious) ( Yellow or green are called GOLDEN) The higher the apples are grown, the sweeter & jucier they will be. Ok
Kinnaur Apple is grown in orchards higher than 3500 feet MSL. These are the tastiest, juciest AND the hardest : the moment you bite into them, juices will seep out from the edges of your lips. These are very crunchy. The best variety is from UPPER KINNAUR. Areas beyond Recong- Pro could be considered for this variety.
UPPER KINNAUR APPLES start to arrive after the 3 Rd week of October thru November.
Kashmiri Apples are softer, less jucier but sweet. I have eaten Kashmiri Apples that have honey flavours. This was very exotic & sent by a friend, don't know much about them.
Just sharing my experiences of the region.

In between Sangla and Citkul. So if your main destination is Chitkul, worth staying here rather than in Sangla. Picture perfect village with some nice hotels. Excellent place for doing just nothing, just seat beside Rupin river and start dreaming... :-)

Rakcham is located between Sangla and Chitkul. This is also very similar in scenic beauty as compared to Chitkul. In few years time, this will also start hosting tourists who are nature lovers. Since it is on the way to Chitkul, one is advised to spend some time by the Baspa valley and soak in the beauty of nature.

Hi,
I am planning a tour to Himachal from 17th-31st December. Can I visit Rakcham, Sangla, Recong Peo?
Written July 16, 2016
Thats a very cold time to travel :). You need to check just a week before or so status of roads ( Mostly should be okey). Its lean season so make sure you have your accommodation sorted, some of the places will be closed.

I was there on 4th June. One of the best views. Snow was melting from glacier in front of eyes. Snow clad mountain was the next and may be accessible through trekking. View-wise the best journey from Sangla to Chitkul.
