Local nature reserve
Apr 2021
This is a brilliant local nature reserve. The footpaths are clearly marked and the going is easy. Parking is limited but was not a problem when we visited the venue midweek during the afternoon. There was a good variety of birds including common terns. The atmosphere of this reserve would be ruined if large numbers attended.

Nice to be back!
Apr 2021 • Couples
Following the relaxation of Covid restrictions, it was a pleasure to be able to drive the short distance up the road to visit Stavely again.

On a bright, spring morning it was a pleasure to stroll around the reserve and, with the addition of a couple of new hides, foliage clearance etc., it looks as though the staff and volunteers have been busy.

The paths were all clear and dry, and even the footpath on the other side of the river Tutt is clear and very easy to walk on. There weren’t huge numbers of birds during our visit, but it was a pleasure nevertheless to sit for a while on a bench overlooking one of the lagoons and simply watch the comings and goings of the ones that are there.

It is always a pleasure to come here.

Great lagoons
Oct 2020
Lovely quiet reserve with easy paths. Two main lagoons. Never seen so many lapwings in one place! Good water birds are and woodland birds. Snipe, lapwing, mute swan, greylag and Canada geese, long tailed tits, chiffchaff, cormorant, widgeon, pochard, moorhen, blue tits, sparrows. Alas didn’t see an otter. Car park which fits about 10 cars. No toilets so outdoor wees! Highland cattle a bonus at the lagoon.

A pleasant peaceful walk.

A beautiful nature reserve a short distance from the attractive village of Ripley.
The car park holds up to about a dozen cars and is free to park.
There is a donation box on entry, a suggested fee of £3 to help maintain the reserve.
Well maintained and fairly flat footpaths lap the park and there is a hide overlooking the lake.
Our dog Monty enjoyed his walk on lead throughout
There are informative boards dotted around the reserve tellung of the various forms of wildlife which includes Doe deer and Otters as well as many forms of birdlife too.
This is a large reserve and a nice way to spend a morning.

Fantastic Natural Beauty

A real hidden gem. We’ve lived just 4 miles away for 26 years without realising what was here until our visit today. Lakes, woodland, farmland, marsh, and lots of wildlife. Free admission but £3 suggested for parking. Really good footpaths and very clean and well managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Plenty of information points and hides for viewing the wildlife. There is plenty to see close to either of the two car parks for anyone who can’t walk far, or you can do a 3 or 4 mile circular walk. Dogs welcome on leads. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will return soon.

Well worth a visit

Good wetland environment, and three well-placed hides. All accessible in a circular walk of less than two miles from the car park just outside the village, or the large, new (?) hide can be reached by car up a rough track.

Wonderful wander!

Only 8km from home but we had no idea this was here! Spent a couple of hours wandering around, such a tranquil place. Saw a few people but very quiet for a fairly sunny early April day!

Hidden Gem.

We came upon this Nature Reserve by chance.Stopped to have our picnic.Small free car park which was nearly full.A couple of signposted walks around the lakes. We entered one of the bird hides and luckily for us there was a Reserve volunteer inside birdwatching.Luckily I had a set of binoculars with me.There must have been 50/60 birds back and forth to the feeders just below us.Many birds that ive never seen in my garden. The volunteer gave us a running commentary on bird names and was very impressive. Will be even nicer when the trees, bushes, meadows all come into bloom.Several seats along the way.A truly calming, peaceful place with wonderful birdsong.

A lot of work gone into staveley & on going. Not to far to walk around & a new hide gives you plenty of views of some of the passing birds what drop in on there travels & in summer lots of Butterflys ect to be seen. a new car park has been put in so you don't have to park in the village as you used to.

Excellent walk

A great place to visit with anyone. It is a level walk, there are different routes to take depending upon time and stamina. The viewing building is a great place to take photos or a break.
