Relaxing, interesting and leisurely
Apr 2021
If you like the big skies of a floodplain walk with the added interest of a sleepy river, Roman remains, and and achingly pretty village (Aldborough), then you’ll enjoy this relatively short walk.

The day we did it the weather was perfect, and we finished with lunch at the Ship Inn. Perfect.

Rained off

We started the walk but found the long grass got us too wet. Then it started raining. What we did see will bring us back another day.

A lovely walk
Nov 2018 • Couples
What's not to like about this walk? It's flat, it gets away from the roads and you get some lovely views. It starts in the middle of Boroughbridge, goes down a footpath to the bank of the River Ure before going up another footpath that leads you onto the road to Aldborough. This village is very charming and picturesque as it has it's own village green, it's own maypole and it's own Roman fort!
A very informative guide is available from the local Tourist Information Centre in Boroughbridge and if you do take the walk it could easily take up a good morning or afternoon even though it is only 3.5 miles (5.5 kms) and that is because there is so much to see.

Roman remains visit

Not the greatest. Not much there.
Wasn't too expensive but not alot to see. The church down the road had a lot more info about Roman Times. Apparently they are going to be investigating more about Roman Times in the area in the approaching year or two, so maybe worth a visit then

A nice leisurely walk
Sep 2018 • Family
If you want a shortish, gentle, easy walk along the level floodplain banks of the River Ure and some country lanes, then this will suit you. It is a very enjoyable walk with interesting landmarks and can be shortened to suit as necessary via a permissive path to Aldborough. Aldborough itself has a 14th Century church, Roman site and for lunch a good pub, the Ship Inn so give yourself a little bit more time for these.

I never tire of this lovely walk.

This is a lovely and very easy walk to do, and the leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre is excellent. The walk along the levee by the river Ure is peaceful and pretty, and the village of Aldborough is simply lovely - the sort of place where you want to live in almost all of the houses!

The historical highlights of the village are the Roman site and the church, but my favourite thing to do is sit on a bench by the fabulous village green, simply enjoying the quiet ambience of the surroundings.

Aldborough is such a lovely place that, even if you don't want to do the full walk, it's worth taking the gentle 15 minute stroll along the road from Boroughbridge.

A lovely walk along the river bank which takes you through the gorgeous village of Aldborough, definitely recommend The Ship Inn for refreshments! Took us just over an hour, a great way to start our walking adventures in 2018

Enjoyable Easy Walk
Jul 2017 • Solo
I had organised to visit Aldborough Roman Site and decided to make a day of it and include Boroughbridge. I was not disappointed. To my surprise Boroughbridge still has a Tourist Information Centre open on a Saturday as well! The lady in there was extremely helpful & knowledgeable offering several ideas of what to do in & around Boroughbridge. She provided leaflets on various local points of interest including one called the Roman Ramble which allowed me to end up in Aldborough. A very enjoyable walk along the River Ure,pointing out interesting landmarks, which if completed returned you to the centre of Boroughbridge. A gentle walk on good well maintained footpaths which took me about an hour to reach Aldborough. Very enjoyable excursion.

Lovely Circular Walk
May 2017 • Couples
After visiting the tourist information point in Boroughbridge we set off on one of the way marked walks. This was is the Roman Ramble and takes you on a lovely walk to the Roman Site in the next village, You will need good walking shoes and suitable clothes but otherwise a gentle walk that follows the river and across fields, A very enjoyable walk with lots of points of interest along the way.
