Mavrovo is a must see. If you are mountain lover it will stay with you forever. It’s totally worth staying for few days as it’s close to multiple locations. Wether you want to see Galicnik or Duf waterfalls or old monasteries... Radika — all is within 30 min... plus it’s on the route Skopje - Ohrid.

I made a walk from Mavrovo Anovi to Galičnik and Janče. It's was a great day with fantastic views. The way to Galičnik is a road but there is not to much traffic. I was wondering why not more people come here for hiking.

We opted to drive this route to avoid any issues with going through Kosovo. Mavrovo is great and really beautiful just wish we had stayed longer to take in the scenary. As we were pressed for time to get to Montenegro by night fall we exited the national park at Debar then into Albania. Very surprised with Albania's beauty also, however be aware there are virtually no road barriers on the sides of some of these mountain roads, still a great drive. Skopje to Bar Montenegro took all day, a good 12 hours driving do not believe your GPS.

Getting to Mavrovo via public transport isn’t for the fussy traveller, and I’d definitely recommend hiring a car if you can. Buses leave from Skopje bus station at irregular times and the only ones that come back are in the morning and at lunchtime, so expect a stay over. Don’t be alarmed if your minibus stops in Galičnik for a transfer to another one…even if the staff at the bus station say it’s a direct ride.
The national park is large as you’d expect, and very mountainous, so hiking gear is necessary if you plan on exploring. Warm clothes are also advisable, because the temperature drops drastically at night time. When we were there, it was somewhere around 26C in the daytime and nearing 0C after dark.
If you stay in Mavrovo itself, the submerged church on the lake is a must. It’s quiet bliss, with only a few cows and stray dogs strolling along the lake banks in October. I think the church is only underwater at the very end of winter into springtime when the mountains are heavier with water.
Sadly, after previous days of hiking, we were too tired to really explore the mountains, but it’s a hiker’s paradise for sure.
A range of arranged outdoor activities and hires are on offer from local companies.
As with so many places in Macedonia, the setting is let down by the incredible amount of litter. It really is quite upsetting and sort of brings you out of the full natural experience, but if you can ignore that, Mavrovo national park is a great place to explore in the day and spend the night. There are quaint restaurants (Mavrovski Merak is a must if you stay in Mavrovo itself) and a good choice of hotels-with-a-view to keep you comfortable.

beautifully green area with water, woods and lots of space!
We walked up to the Duf waterfalls (path is very well marked from just above the Muslim cemetery near the village of Rostuse)and enjoyed the sight of the plunge!
We also visited the Sv Jovan Bigorski Monastery near Jance: very much worth a detour.

the lake is massive (artificial and originally created for energy), very basic and empty at this time of the year. A good place to escape for some peace and quiet. (not if you go in the winter as its full during ski season apparently). don't look for five star anything!! 90 mins away from skopje airport. nice place to hike, mountain bike, (ski in the winter). Very cheap. 60 den. is 1 euro...and to put it into perspective, a cheeseburger is 90 den.!
people are really nice and friendly but not a lot of english knowledge...you might get more german though...

Our start point was Leunovo, Vila Ana-Marija ( perfectly located ). The park is huge and you can visit it on foot ( hiking ) or by bike.
The route we chose was a circle around the lake with the same name - Mavrovo Lake. Route : Leunovo - Mavrovo - Leunovo.
As the weather was rainy and cold, we drove all the way around. In fact, it's a pity, we should have walked ....the circle is 27 km almost all around the lake.
Wat you can see, beside the pristine nature : a beautiful byzantine church and an old church in the water of the lake. Very picturesque !
Mavrovo is a little city, it comes into life in summer and winter ( ski ). Plenty of accommodation, from basic to 5*.
Highly recommended !

Hi everybody, I am interested in coming in Mavrovo National Park on April 30th.
I tried to contact via email the Park, but I didn't get the information I asked for.
I would like to know:
- If it is possible to buy tickets for entering in the park online and, if yes, how (the Mavrovo website is not available in english. Am I wrong?)
- I wanted to know if there are well-marked and marked trails that you can travel independently. If yes, is it possible to have a map?
thank you for answers and advices!!
