Disclaimer: Part of the Nature Reserve is cultivated or landscaped while I'd say a majority (the further out areas) are natural. You will want to rent a single or pairs bike which they offer if you want to enjoy the natural areas. We visited after a rainy day so the air was quite nice.

Seeing the wetlands was quite nice although perhaps some might object to the towering wind generators off in the distance. In one section of the cultivated area are fruiting trees some of which were planted by local school children.

At the time we visited, we saw black swans and white geese, however I suspect their presence was mainly due to the rice and corn left for them. I did see some smaller wild birds, butterflies and honeybees which was a pleasant surprise for late November.

I understand there is a trail that will take you to the point where the mighty Yangtze river meets the East China Sea, but I didn't make it there since I had a 2 year old in a stroller. If I'm not mistaken it's a 7-10km walk from the main entrance that is friendly to a bike which you can rent there as I mentioned, but for us we'd need a jogging stroller to get there. Some trails are paved, others wood planked, still others loose gravel.

Our visit lasted 2 1/2 hours walking at a leisurely pace to the wetland observation deck (about 3 stories up and has a restroom facility thankfully) and back.

The wetlands with the songs of so many birds was exceptional, a special day of rural serenity only an hour from the city frenzy of Shanghai...highly recommended for lovers of nature.

It's a relaxing place if you have a day free and love nature. Better go there in winter, when there are many kind of birds in the park. In summer, maybe there's just you and.. the grass, oh, and a beautiful lotus lake

Entrance fee 70 RMB was quite a surprise considering other venues are mostly free in Shanghai. Nevertheless good value. There are actually two parks in this ticket - Bird and WetLand. Lots of flowers greenery lakes and ponds even in November. Loved those Swiss looking black swan families. I was jogging entire round, but most people would bike. Great escape - no other options anyway during this lock-down period.

You really must rent the bikes and check out all the views. The price is right and I suggest you bring a picnic or be brave and try the local restaurant.

If you have a weekend free and want a relaxing nature park only an hour's drive from central Shanghai then this is the place for you.

We stayed overnight at the Hyatt Regency on the island which was great (see separate review).

We took a ten minute taxi ride to the park. We hired bikes for only rmb20 for first two hours and rmb10 per hour after that. Pretty landscape with lakes, grasses and seasonal bird life and even some little goats! Great boardwalks and very flat so easy cycling. Unfortunately when we went the boats weren't operating and interpretation areas were closed but think we were just unlucky as they were under renovation. Great day out but be sure to arrange your taxi back to where you are staying as it is remote.

It's a place to go if you need break from city life, very close to Shanghai. Suggest to visit on sunny day. You can ride Bicycle & boat here for covering whole park faster. nice place for whole day get-away from Shanghai. Spring is time for yellow picturesque land in Chongming island!!

Very nice but there are zero food or drink options available on site. If you pack a picnic and enough drinks it will be a lovely afternoon. If not, you'll have starving and cranky children.

We decided to have a two days out of Shanghai and the closest option seemed to be Chongming. We so decided to visit and Dongtan Birds National Nature Reserve and we made a good choise. Quite environment for being just an hour outside Shanghai city center. Air is incredibly clean and fresh. Silence in most of the place. Every place is clean and well kept. Possible to rent bycicles to better enjoy the visit. So relaxing. If you are looking for fresh air and relax that's the place. but be aware cause nearby there is almost nothing. no shops or Others, fields only and that's what I really liked

My daughter and I visited here late afternoon on a sunny August day. The reserve is massive -- it is chock full of waterways, pathways and boardwalks through the wetlands. I was impressed with the land set aside for a reserve, hearing the bird song of those birds who did brave the late afternoon heat of summer, and the landscaping around the visitor's center. I would recommend renting a bicycle (if you are not with a small child as I was) -- they have single and tandem bikes available to rent. Or bring a stroller with a cover, good walking shoes, and go with plenty of time. We arrived around 3 PM and departed at 5 PM. There was so much more to see. However, without a car this is not easy to reach. We stayed at a nearby hotel (20 minutes away by car) and had to call a town taxi to pick us up and drive us there. And call again when we wanted to depart - waiting over 20 minutes for the taxi to arrive. Still, if you are a fan of nature, bird watching, and have the time and means, it is worth a visit.
