If you are in the area this is one of those must do's. We travelled from Kirkby Stehen through Keld and Thwaite down into Hawes. Having travelled the pass both ways, I can honestly say that both directions are great. The scenery is spectacular, with great views (for the passenger) across the fells. There are a number of places to park up to take in the scenery. Really worth it, but drive with care.

Simply stunning breathtaking scenery. We drove from Hardraw falls and stopped to see the butter tubs. Then on to Reeth and doubled back to take a break in the Tan Hill Inn along the way. WOW amazing, and a day to remember.

Had a drive out to find some snow. Buttertubs pass is a fantastic stretch of road with breathtaking scenery on every corner. Very beautiful snow scenes, so impressive.
I never get board having a drive out though the Dales, just love taking in all the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales.

View was amazing, but the road was AWESOME...I love twisty roads, my car enjoys them so much, I could drive the pass all day. The weather was good which helped. A perfect end to a great day. had just visited the cheese factory in Hawes.....

My dad always said when he died he would like his ashes scattered here. On arrival I could see why, breathtaking views, rolling hills absolutely stunning. So today my family and I scattered my dad's, my step mother's and my dog Margos ashes. They where swept up by the wind up into the hills. Rest in peace in the most beautiful place in England

From Richmond, up to Leyburn then onto the Hawes Creamery to sample all the cheeses, Then cross over into Swaledale stopping at the Buttertub Pass, then up to Tan Hill, the Highest Pub in England, down into Reeth for Icecream, then back into Richmond, passing Willances Leap (do your research on this one) on your left. The best driving day trip in UK.

This was one of those spur of the moment trips based on a google result.

The pass north of Hawes is fantastic, a pleasant drive if you have visibility and you are ok driving on the edge of cliff type roads. Plus we saw and photographed a Lapwing which is unusual (for us).

We turned around near the far end and came back, mesmerised by the view.

However we though the pass was named after features generally found along the pass and spent the time questioning why they didn't look like buttertubs.

Reading reviews on here and looking at our video footage we are actually looking the other way as we drove past the real exhibit (twice!!)

So frustration as we missed the highlight but our own fault for not reading up.

Marked this down as I suspect a lot of visitors would like to see this and the very least that could be done is to put up a sign for it...

For anyone thinking of going, ensure you know where to stop, really it is case of blink and you miss it. If you reach the cattle grid after the summit (going north) you have gone too far....

There are some insightful reviews on TA to avoid our mistake. Wish I'd read them before I went!!

I drove over the buttertubs pass to Hawes. Stunning views but a little scary in parts where the road narrows and sheer drop on the nearside. Coming back was better but the views both ways are spectacular.

If you enjoy scenic vistas and nature, you will love a trip through the Buttertubs pass and area in Yorkshire Dales National Park. It really is God's country !!!

The Buttertubs Pass is a road in the Yorkshire Dales. It's a winding road that makes its way north from past 20 metre deep limestone potholes called the Buttertubs. I was told by relatives that the name of the potholes comes from when farmers would stop on their way to market to sell butter etc (since they didn't use cars back then) and when the weather was hot they would lower the butter into the holes on ropes to keep their goods cool till they resumed their travels.

We generally go to Hawes and travel through the pass and area on the way to the highest pub in England called Tanhill Inn. We never miss this trip.

The reviews by people stating it was all but a near-death experience made us wary of doing it, but with the great weather, we said we would go for it. It is very safe. Not for people who are naturally nervous but it is safe. Having been rared in Ireland with some very narrow roads (Corkscrew hill and the Conor Pass), perhaps I am not as easily spooked. There were railings and everything so it is very safe. We have a big car and we came across both a Range Rover and several SUV's and there were no issues.

The views are incredible, I cannot express this enough.
