A wonderful friend bought me for my 60th birthday a vineyard visit and lunch . I know nothing about wine but have neighbours who do and every year we have a local wine competion in our area of Murcia where the quality of wine is quite good to my un trained tastebuds. This said we were recieved in the baking heat without an offer of ice water or a glass of wine spritzer. The tour was well explained, but a short video would have be helpful if you have not see the picking of the grapes etc . The wine tasting was awful never have I tasted white wine which was so bitter and the first two were introduced as "Armarga" the last a red was like a sweet sherry Which I did like. Usually when our local village have wine events we are served ham and cheese, in plentiful quantity we were served olives and very 6 very thinly sliced pieces of cheese. I bought a bottle of the sweet red for my delightful friend I hope she enjoys it. Experience 4 out ouf 10 Information learned 8 out of 10 sampling 1 out of 10 sorry Alvear . It was my first trip to a Bodega I expected to taste the best wines that you had to offer.

Visited as part of a coach excursion to Montilla. Winery is still in private family ownership (currently eighth generation) and is the second oldest in Spain. Our guide went into great detail about their winemaking before moving on to the best part of the visit - the tasting rooms! We enjoyed three or four different wines/fortified wines (sherry). In this region they make white and fortified wines (they’ve another winery near Portugal for reds) and have to admit we were both surprised at the fantastic taste and quality. There’s a sales area and they did very well from our group - one of my purchases was a small bottle of Amontillado which is destined for my suitcase and home to UK. If I visited again then I think I’d forgo the tour and head directly to the tasting area (tickets can be purchased separately).

No holidays is worth it without an activity. You visit a place and you get so much more when you spice it with a bit fo local culture, folklore and interaction. Bodegas Alvear has been paired to the quality of thier wines and their traditional wine-making ways for more than three centuries now. The 90mins visit is well worth the money, a nice walking tour around the clean premises aptly presented and described by an informed guide (thanks Aurora!). The shop is very well stocked with some hidden gems that we merrily took back home. The standard of the wines is very high and the tasting (including some cheese, olives and nibbles) was also good. If you like bodegas and visited the ones in Jerez you will be able to compare and make your own decisions. In the meantime, quite a discovery for us and a reason to stock some of the best fortified wines anywhere in the world. Venture outside you Riojas and Riberas... Palomino, PX and all its variants: Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, etc will reward you a lot more than you expect. Recommended!

On our way to Cordoba- we decided to stop off at Montilla town- famous for it's white wines. We were recommended to go to Alvear Bodega- we arrived 1.30 - met a lovely lady- she told us we missed the tour and asked if we had booked-we confessed we hadn't . No issue she took us to the shop and the tasting area- yes it did cost € 8 for 3 wines but she had no issue with us sharing and the wines were reasonably priced. It's the second oldest family winery in Spain - 8 generations.

Imma, the guide, was very knowledgeable about tiny details of wine production and the history of the house. The wines were well explained and described during degustation. We were free to choose what to buy, no push, and purchased what we wanted and what we liked. Muchas gracias.
