Beautiful

Beautiful monument. Fantastic view across the great City of Sunderland from here. One of the best monuments you will visit. It’s also a short distance from Herrington Park which is a fantastic place to walk your dog and get exercise. Can’t wait to visit again

Re-living the 1980s

I jogged up the hill to remember the 1980s with a view from the temple where the Toy Dolls did their Glenda video and what do I see in the dale below? A circus tent - so that's where Nellie escaped from. Left happy with a group of local teens enjoying their own dusk among the columns.

A Grecian Temple in the East
Sep 2021 • Friends
Found on the NT app whilst in the area. It was quite a climb up the steps but the views were well worth it. Just to sit in this huge monument that resembles a greek temple, and watch the world go by on a lovely day was pleasure enough but the well signed pathways and walks were an added bonus.
I found that the monument was built to commemorate the first Earl of Durham in 1844/5 and given to the NT in 1939. A little written information in the absence of a tour guide would have enhanced our visit but it was still great.

Fantastic views

Never been here since I was a kid. Fantastic views from the top and didn’t disappoint. Great walk up and plenty of trails leading off into fields and woods

There’s kissing gates and stiles to get into the fields and woods but the monument has easy access

Fabulous Views
Aug 2021 • Family
Parked up at the roadside at the bottom of Penshaw Hill and slowly climbed up to the top. The steps are a bit steep but we'll maintained and clear. The views from the top are fantastic. The kids had a bit of a run around and we got some fantastic pictures.
There isn't a lot more else to do there and no facilities on site but there is in the park opposite for those who need them.

Nice meal
Aug 2021 • Couples
Have not been to Penshaw tearoom since before the pandemic, went there last weekend and felt so happy I did. Staff always friendly and food were really nice.

My husband had roast beef sandwich - generous meat portion with nice addition of caramelised onion.

My goat cheese panini was nice but the panini could be a little bit more toasted and it would be better.

All in all nice meal and we will be back again very soon!!

PS additional outdoor seating layout is lovely and well spaced out.

Great views
May 2021 • Family
We decided to visit when the weather wasn’t so great which worked out well as we were able to park close to the entrance, I’ve heard that it’s very busy during weekends and when the weather is good.

The walk up to the monument is steep and wouldn’t be possible with a wheel chair, buggy or anyone with walking issues.

The monument is interesting to see and has amazing views. However there were no information boards around the monument which I had expected, we didn’t stay long, but it was a nice place to visit.

Love going to the top of penshaw the views are amazing and can see for miles. But is hard for disabled people to get to but it’s understandable as it is on a hill.
