It is easy to reach this museum. About 20 min. train trip from Copenhagen city centre and a short walk. Location is odd but very beautiful. This museum is for everyone, even for kids. Outside the museum there is a sculpture park. Beautiful surroundings, sea, sand dunes...

It has been a few years since I have been here. I have been visiting the museum regularly since it opened in the spring in 1996. Again an amazing experience - the location is stunning, the architecture of the building is wonderful and the art was amazing. Special spaces and special atmosphere. A significant work of Danish architecture with the 150 m long Art Axis as the main compartment.
The collections consist mainly by Danish, Nordic and international contemporary artists, primarily representing the period after 1990. The main part of the collection is on display in ARKEN's permanent exhibition. New, important pieces are added to the collection all the time.
The Wegner exhibition exceeded my expectations, surprised by the amount of images, both of Gerda Wegner and her husband Einar Wegene (Lili Elbe) and the fact that Gerda mastered both drawing, painting watercolors and oil paints.
Also there are some larger art pieces placed freely around the museum.
If you need a swim or to sunbath the museum is situated in a fine beach environment.
Take the time to visit Ishøj yacht harbour opposite the museum. It offers a nice and cocy atmosphere for a walk with several small cozy spots around the harbor with benches and tables to be used for lunch or just to rest and enjoy the view and the life passing by.

A highlight of my trip to Copenhagen. It was quite easy to get to, about a 20min train ride from Copenhagen central to Ishoj - trains are very regular - and then a 20 minute brisk walk. I recommend taking a slightly longer scenic walk from Ishoj station if the weather is fair, and you can say hello to Oscar under the bridge, one of the 6 recycled sculpture “forgotten giants” dotted around the outskirts of Copenhagen. Just past Oscar is a nice stretch of beach and it was very pleasant taking in some winter sun with not a person in sight. The museum is just along the coast. I went for the Leonora Carrington exhibition which was excellent, with the large mural, The Magic World of the Mayans, the undoubted star. The permanent collection was also good, with lots of Damien Hirst pieces if that’s your thing, and plenty of other well-known contemporary art names. I even enjoyed the Giant Billiard exhibition despite the lack of billiard balls due to some technical issues, who doesn’t like a bouncy castle in the name of art? The staff were exceptionally friendly throughout. The cafe was nice, with lovely views towards the sea, I had a cookie-brownie which was delicious. If you like the idea of a peaceful coastal setting with first-rate modern and contemporary art and don’t mind a short trip from central Copenhagen, go to Arken.

THE MUSEUM: the spectacular architecture of this museum already makes the trip to Arken worth it. The ship-shaped building houses an interesting collection of contemporary art (both Danish and international), focusing on paintings and installations with a soft spot for Damien Hirst's paintings. It also presents several temporary exhibitions of international relevance a year, of modern and/or contemporary art. The café makes you feel on the deck of a ship and offers a great view of the surroundings and the sea.
THE BEACH: during the summer, I would strongly advise to combine a visit to Arken with a trip to the beach (2 minutes from the museum). The beach has a parking and you can buy beverages and ice-creams from a little shop.
GETTING THERE: you can go either by car or by train. S-trains (A or E) run every 15 minutes from the Central Station to Ishøj and will get you there in about 20 minutes. At Ishøj, you can either walk to the museum following the signage (15-20 minutes) or take the bus 128 that goes straight to the museum.
COST: entrance fee to the museum is 85 DKK/15$ (free admission for children under 18) and train fares are 105DKK/20$.
CHILDREN: the museum is children-friendly and a brochure for children will guide them through the temporary exhibitions. The beach behind the museum is a family beach where you will feel comfortable even if your kids are the rowdy kind!

Visited Arken for the first time although being local resident. Nice place. Enjoying the art but as an “engineer” it is a bit hard to understand...

This museum overall is super cool. We really loved the whole thing, however the Picasso exhibition was probably one of the best that I've ever seen (and I've seen many!). I loved the videos and explanations. It was extremely enjoyable and I would HIGHLY recommend!

Surprisingly easy to get to the museum via train and bus 128. The current Picasso exhibition is great. You can easily spend the whole day there enjoying all the collections. The museum restaurant is also great and the outdoor sculptures are worth to explore if you have the time.

There is a Picasso exhibition on in October, which would make the trip out here really worth it however, today I felt I had wasted my time as the art work and installations were not to my tastes. Art is such a personal thing I know. Architecturally the building is wonderful. Without a car, it’s a train and bus to get there.

Many years ago, I visited arken museum and know about Daniel hirst artwork. I will be visiting Copenhagen again year end, am worried that the artwork has moved. Does anyone know if his works are still exhibited there, or if there is another venue I can visit to see his artwork. Thank you
