I visited this museum on my first visit to Greece, Tsarouchis being one of my favourite painters. It is very small with only two floors, but it provides nice insight into the artist's life and workspace, and they shift around the displays to keep it fresh. You can view not only some paintings but reference photographs he used. It is a modest museum so you could easily complete your visit in under half an hour.
Although it may seem daunting that it's located in a suburb of Athens, it's quite easy to get to by metro, with Kat station on the M1 line just around the corner from the museum. The walk from the metro is also very nice as it is a quiet residential area lined with many fig, olive, and orange trees.

The home and studio of the Greek Painter, Yannis Tsarouchis, is a gem of a museum you could easily miss as information is scarce and the Tsarouchis Foundation Website is not mobile enabled so cannot be accessed on phones and tablets (!).
The neo-classical house is tucked away in the suburban sprawl of Athens in Marousi. You are greeted by one of Tsarouchis’ gentlemen peering down at you from an upper window. There are a selection of Tsarouchis work on show and a small shop selling prints and other collectibles on the ground floor.
Internationally Tsarouchis is probably best known for his homoerotic paintings of young men and sailors. Which makes this a bit of a shrine for LGBT travellers “in the know”, but his work is quite varied and included a lot of theatre set and costume design.
The Foundation is a bit strapped for cash so donations gratefully accepted.

After seeing a few paintings by Tsarouchis in the Benaki Museum I found out on the internet about the Foundation. After a 40 minute metro journey it can be found in walking distance of the Kat metro station in a nice calm residential neighbourhood. I was given a tour by the Tsarouchis's niece, a friendly old woman, determined to take good care of her uncle's legacy and to promote it. The foundation is in need of funds to further restore the house, but it is safe and some rooms are nicely done for a charming recreation of the artist's workshop. There is even a small museumshop. All in all work in progress. I will certainly come back.

It was wonderful to visit the house of this incredibly talented artist, chat with the young curator there and learn about his very first man with wings who was an actual actor at the Karaghiozis shadow puppets' theatre, his photo archive, scenography works, illustrations for Kavafi's poems, and the man with the flower crown was in fact a worker involved with the construction of this beautiful house. It was his wish to create this Museums and it actually opened some ten years before he died. A unique place in which wou can admire his personal style with nudes and sailors inspired by Ancient Greek statuary and deep knowledge of old masters and modern styles. Do not miss the beautiful neighborhood full of trees, flowers, and butterflies - a prefect place for Tsarouchis to get inspired. In the small gift store you can get souvenirs, cheap posters, and some expensive and signed graphics.

To see paintings of Tsarouchis you have to go to the Benakis Museum. In the house of Tsarouchis you will find his atelier, lots of interesting books, foto's and feel the artistic athmosfere of the artis. Wonderful are the foto's of his models.
The foundation needs a lot of money for restauration of the house.
Take care of the openingtime!

Yiannis Tsarouchis is one of Greece's greatest painters of the 30's-50's. This is the largest selection of his works.
