We stooped here as our first stopover during a Yarra Valley winery tour.
It did seem like a strange place to stop as it seemed like a local produce shop on the highway. This actually is very interesting as the owner greets you and explains the process of his hydroponic process for their capsicum and strawberries. After this the owner put on some spreads and cheese.
Everything is local produce and very tasty. We bought some fresh plums which were delicious.

Hi Chizzel,
Firstly, huge apologies for not responding to your review sooner and secondly, we're so glad you enjoyed your delicious plums and liked the tour of the hydroponic capsicum and strawberries we grow. I'm sure it felt odd to be stopping at a fruit and veg shop, but am so glad to hear you then enjoyed the tour of the high tech hydroponic greenhouses with our explanation of how we use the latest in Integrated Pest Management techniques and a zero waste closed loop irrigation system, which means we can produce many times the yield of field crops using a fraction of the chemicals, sprays water and fertilizer.
Thrilled to hear you found everything very tasty and we hope to welcome you back soon. :-)

Hi Karyn,
I can't believe you left your review a year ago and we are only just now replying - big apologies.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us this lovely review, and we're so glad you enjoyed your toasties and the variety of food on offer to sample - we find once people get to try our tomato kasundi or sweet capsicum relish or jam, they then HAVE to buy some, so it works well for everyone :-) Also, because so many of our menu items are served with our condiments (scones come with cream and Gateway Estate's own strawberry jam), (our vegetarian potato frittata is served with Gateway Estate's sweet capsicum relish) customers get to enjoy them first in the cafe, and then love realising they can buy some to take home - in fact everything we serve in the cafe is available for people to buy and take home and many do!
We're thrilled you describe Gateway Estate as a 'lovely place' and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

We have stopped here a few times on our way home from the wonderful yarra valley to have a break and purchase a few last minute gifts or produce. But his time it was not so great. The coffee was very ordinary.. insipid would be the best description. I bought a large punnet of strawberries thinking we could have them as part of our supper - but when I got home, had to throw out about 75% of them as they were brown and rotten.
Purchased a few other long life options - we shall see. Wont be stopping here again.

Thank you for your review and sorry we are only just responding to it now. You're right we are a one-stop-shop for many locals as we do sell such a large variety of local produce and people nowadays are increasingly keen to buy food with low food miles. Our u-pick strawberries are available year round and we always recommend people call first to see if there are many ripe berries ready for picking.
Thanks for taking the time to review us and hope to see you again soon.

Hi Amanda,
Apologies it's taken so long for us to respond to your review and thank you for taking the time to give us a review and a 5 star one at that. It was great that you listed the diverse range of goods we sell - we are a one-stop-shop for many locals and a great place for visitors to the region to come to and find such a great selection of what is grown and made locally all under one roof.
Hope you'll be visiting again soon.
All the best.

This is a real farm gate opportunity. The shop has an excellent range of Yarra Valley produce and fresh vegetables. The good bit is that the coffee shop serves excellent coffee and snacks and is an ideal place to pop into, just off the highway in the heart of Coldstream.

Hi Jiayi,
Thank you so much for this lovely feedback and for taking the time to review us. And we apologise that it has taken us so long to respond to your kind words.
We're so glad that you were able to pick strawberries with your little boy when you came to visit Gateway Estate - kids do love it, we see their smiles as they spy bright red juicy strawberries to pick and for many it is the first time they have seen strawberries growing on a plant so it is educational as well as fun and delicious! We always recommend to people that they call us before setting out to visit us to see if the strawberry plants have ripe fruit ready for picking, because the plants have fruiting cycles, and it would be a shame if customers came and there was no ripe fruit to pick.
We love living in the Yarra Valley and recommending to visitors where else they might like to explore while here in our region. As our name suggests, we are at the very gateway to (start of) the Yarra Valley so we are well placed to make recommendations, as nowhere is too far from us.
Karen does make a mean soup and it's great to hear you loved her cauliflower soup - it is very popular, especially at this time of year and people love that they can enjoy some here in the cafe and then buy some to take home and have later or even freeze.
We hope to welcome you back again to Gateway Estate one day soon.

We attended as part of a bigger group on a Wine Tour - and the first 35minutes were spent being educated on how the Estate got around to growing capsicums which I felt was a bit much - we were there to taste their produce.
Having said that, the Estate has some fabulous produce (and their Wasabi mayo is amazing) so it's definitely worth a visit

Hi Maggie,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and we apologise that we are only just now responding. We appreciate your feedback about the greenhouse tour you experienced as part of your wine tour companies visit. With a large group of people we know some will want a longer more in-depth chat about how we are growing chemical-free capsicums and strawberries (and now basil) in our state of the art greenhouses while others will want to go back inside to start sampling the local produce we lay on for you - it is a balance that we are aware of and try to achieve on each tour we take.
Great to hear that the produce you tasted was 'fabulous' and you recommend us as a place to visit. Hope you can come and visit again soon, perhaps independently, as then you can take your time sampling our other estate made produce, like our tomato kasundi and sweet capsicum relish, and enjoy a bite to eat in our cafe.

Hi! How do I get to Gateway Estate via public bus from Melbourne? What fruits are in season in late April? Thanks
Written April 9, 2019
Hi JasY7,
We will have strawberries available for picking in April, and the best way to get to us from Melbourne via public transport is to get a train out to Lilydale and then take the 685 bus towards Healesville and tell the driver you're visiting us and get off at our stop. :-)
