Retrace the Southern Silk Road
Jun 2015 • Solo
If you like adding a bit of historical legacy to your outdoor trips, Gaoligongshan is your place. Most of the reserve is closed to tourists but the hiking path that is open retraces the southern Silk Road. Much of the old stone path still remains and the trail itself is well marked. It was also the site of a decisive battle between Japan and China during WWII.

The hike itself is around 20km if you go from Bailinhua to Linjiapu, 15km if you hitch a ride to 二台坡 (ertaipo) on the Bailinhua side and then go on to Linjiapu and around 28km if you go from Bailinhua to Jiangzhou. The trail ends at Linjiapu but depending on if there are people at the end or not, you may have to walk on a paved (downhill) road to get from Linjiapu to Jiangzhou (though there should be no such transportation problem if you're going the opposite way. I admittedly did not go at the right time of the year (June/raning season) so I didn't personally get to witness the views that others have expounded upon but the hike itself was interesting, if somewhat difficult (more or less a straight shot up to the peak, around 3,175 km and then back down again). I also went by myself which is not recommended, especially given that there are a number of dangerous animals in the area (bears, wild pigs, leopards). The trail is relatively well marked though and if you're looking for an adventure, this is definitely the place!

Getting there is a bit of a pain and information about doing so on English language sites seem to be rather scarce. You can enter from either side of the trail - from 百花岭 (Bailinhua) village on the 保山 (Baoshan) side or 林家铺 (Linjiapu) on the 腾冲(Tengchong) side. Buses do not go directly to Bailinhua from Baoshan but if you get on a bus to 芒宽(Mangkuan) at the Southern Bus Station in Baoshan you can ask the bus driver to let you off at 双虹桥(Shuanghongqiao Bridge) and then hitch a minibus to Bailinhua. Likewise buses go from Tengchong to 江苴 (Jiangzhou according to the local pronunciation) and from there you can hitch a ride on a minibus to Linjiapu. There are numerous guest houses that you can stay out in Bailinhua (anywhere from 20 to 100 yuan as far as I can tell) as well as in Jiangzhou.

Also note, you will have to get a hiking permit before you start but they are free (ostensibly, there are some operators who will try to charge you for it).
