Built in the middle 16th Century, on 6 floors, it is a very mysterious building with an intriguing lack of historical detail. Why was it built as a pentagon (the only period chateau in France with 5 sides)? What brilliant architect and builder put this together with a well in the centre surrounded by the stone stairwell. And why?
It is being sensitively restored and booking a guide seemed not at all difficult. Definitely worth the walk and the effort of finding this off the beaten track gem.

Having reading in a guide book that the chateau is not to be missed and other press indicating that the chateau was a hidden gem as we were staying in the region we decided to make a visit. We were not disappointed as the chateau is well sign posted and we found that there is plentiful parking in the road.
The entry gate is up a steep set of stairs and it was not until we we had tolled up the steps that we found the chateau provided an electric golf buggy. I would say that however for a person with a disability or a wheelchair the venue would not prove to them accessible. The welcome was excellent.Entry to the house is by a guided tour only and is given in french. A written guide, which is very informative, is available in english. Notices in the rooms would be helpful to following the guide but is only a minor niggle.
There are still considerable building works to be completed but this adds to any visit.
An entry fee of 4 euros is extremely good value for a visit.

This is a hidden gem, so well hidden in fact that when we visited it and found that we did not have a suitable “pourboire” for the wonderful guide and wrote with a “bourboire” our letter was returned undelivered. The chateau is not far from Tanlay and is quite well signposted but it is very unusual. If you expect to find a traditional French chateau you are in for a surprise. You’ll find instead a pentagonal renaissance building dating from the 16th century and clearly influenced by Italian architecture of the period. It is really a very grand hunting lodge situated on top of a hill. At the moment it is partly covered by protective sheeting whilst it is being beautifully restored to its former glory. In its centre is a well and a staircase is built round that with rooms leading outwards which are unfurnished at the moment. You need to check that the building is open and that you can take a guided tour. You won’t be disappointed.
