Do not expect friendly attention at entrance hut... When you get there you will feel you are bothering the gatekeeper.

The place is nice (nothing special), but unfortunately is one of the few places in Uruguay where you can do some hiking. The walk is quite boring but the view from the top is very good.
The people that manage the place and that "welcome" you at the entrance are unpolite and treat visitors (that are their way of income) without any respect, their attitude is barely tollerable by a well behaving person.
The path are very badly kept (many cut trees bloking the way along the path or cut branches hanging above the path at "eye" level). Considering that you have to pay for visiting the place the path should be much better maintained.
Go there only if you do not have other options.

A wonderful trail up the highest spot in Uruguay. It will take you at least 4 hours to achieve one of the two trails available. This is nature totally untouched. Once you start walking you are on your own. No signs, no services, no restrooms. The lady at the main gate is rather "sour" , but she makes sure you have the right shoes on plenty water and that you will not throu any garbage on your way. Your safety is on your hands. And she makes sure you understand that. The view at the top of the mountain is impressive . Certainly I do reccommend this activity. I would avoid doing it with small kids or elder folks though... it is a very demanding walk and should someone get hurt on the way, there are no possibilities to get back other than walking through a very difficult trail.

This is indeed a lovely place, but it is private, and the owner-gatekeeper is the opposite of welcoming and friendly. On the gate it says open from 9 until dusk. We got there at 2, walked the 500m to the entrance, for some unknown reason cars are no longer allowed to go to the car park, and were told we could not go in because it would take us too long to walk to one of the two places advertised as being accessible.

Apparently it takes 8 hours to walk up to the top of the Sierra, it doesn´t, been there before and you can do it in four or five easily, and 4 hours to the lakes and back, significantly nearer. We had at least four hours until dusk, but were not allowed to enter. Could we not perhaps go for a three hour walk we asked? No, people say that and then take longer we were told, in an extemely rude and obviously annoyed tone. Last entry was at 1:30. There was going to be no negociation, I said why not put a last entrance time at the gate, and was told it says walks of 4 hours and 8 hours so it was obvious. I was less than amused!

So, go there by all means, its cheap, there is no litter (a minor miracle in this country) and the view is wonderful, but get there in the morning at least. Also, make sure you take at least 1.5 litres of water per person, not because you will necessarily need it, but the gatekeeper will check your rucksack and not allow you in if you don't, trust me this is not a joke, seen it happen. At least is says that on the gate though.
